Treat conditions where pathogens are in the exterior, and after sweating, purging, or vomiting therapies, the pathogenic toxins have not dispersed. This results in deficiency of the exterior and excess of the interior, with manifestations appearing on the body surface. In severe cases, it leads to irritability and delirious speech.
Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (equal parts). Decoct in water and take orally.
Another perspective: The onset of Yang-pattern diseases in Cold Damage has four natures. Warm toxin eruptions are the most severe; redness indicates Stomach Heat, while purple-black discoloration indicates rotting of the Stomach tissue. These arise from purging either too early or too late, representing macules caused by external contracted heat diseases. They can be treated by combining Xuan Shen Sheng Tang (Scrophularia and Cimicifuga Decoction) with Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Decoction). See the Cold Damage section for Bai Hu Tang. There are also cases of macules due to internal injury, caused by extreme deficiency of Stomach Qi and fire wandering to the exterior. These should be treated with tonification to descend the fire.
There is no need to distinguish among the five types of Jaundice; they all share damp-heat as the common pathology. If the complexion is blackish-yellow accompanied by thirst, the condition is difficult to treat.
