Pang Anshi stated: If one is injured by cold in winter, it may transform into Summerheat disease (Shu Bing) from the day after the Summer Solstice until the Sanfu period. The heat intensity of this condition is greater than that of Warmth diseases (Wen Bing). Some cases follow the transmission pattern of Cold Damage (Shang Han) through the Three Yin and Three Yang meridians, while others do not follow this sequential transmission but instead present directly with heat syndromes of the Five Zang organs. Treatment should be administered according to the specific syndrome presentation.
For Summerheat disease, a formula replacing Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) with the addition of Gegen (Kudzu Root) is indicated.
Ingredients: Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra or Radix Paeoniae Alba), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (each 1.5 liang); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (1 liang); Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (1.5 liang); Gegen (Radix Puerariae) (2 liang); Zao (Fructus Jujubae) (16 pieces).
Procedure: Coarsely crush the herbs, add six sheng of water, and decoct to obtain three sheng. Administer one zhan orally in divided doses, followed by measures to induce sweating.
For Summerheat disease, a formula replacing Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) is indicated.
Ingredients: Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) (each 1 liang); Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) (3 liang); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (each 1 liang).
Decoct and administer as described above.
For Summerheat disease, a formula replacing Da Qing Long Tang (Major Blue-Green Dragon Decoction) is indicated.
Ingredients: Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) (2 liang); Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (3 liang); Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 1 liang); Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) (30 seeds); Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (1.5 liang); Zao (Fructus Jujubae) (16 pieces).
Decoct and administer as described above.
For Summerheat disease, a formula replacing Gegen Tang (Kudzu Decoction) with added Mahuang is indicated.
Ingredients: Gegen (Radix Puerariae) (2 liang); Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) (1.5 liang); Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra or Radix Paeoniae Alba) (each 1 liang); Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (1.5 liang); Zao (Fructus Jujubae) (16 pieces).
Decoct and administer as described above.
If Summerheat disease persists for three to seven days without remission of internal heat, and becomes contagious among people, Da Qing Xiao Du Tang (Major Cyan Decoction for Detoxification) is used.
Ingredients: Daqing (Cortex Isatidis), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (each 2 liang); Shanzhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (4 liang total for Shigao, 1 liang for Zhizi? Text says Shanzhizi 1 liang, Shigao 4 liang); Chi (Fermented Soybean); Shidi Huang (Fresh Rhizoma Rehmanniae) (0.5 sheng each for Daqing and Mangxiao; 0.5 sheng for Chi and Shidi Huang). *Correction based on text structure*: Daqing, Mangxiao (each 2 liang); Shanzhizi (1 liang); Shigao (4 liang); Chi (0.5 sheng); Shidi Huang (0.5 sheng).
Procedure: Coarsely crush the herbs, add seven sheng of water, and decoct to obtain three sheng. Strain out the dregs, dissolve Mangxiao in the liquid, and administer one zhan warm. Continue until the heat is eliminated.
Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) is generally applicable for Summerheat disease, used in the same manner as for Cold Damage and Jueyin syndromes. (The formula is located in the Jueyin Syndrome section.)
Mai Nu Wan (Wheat Mildew Pill) is generally applicable for Summerheat disease. (The formula is located in the Miscellaneous Sweating Syndromes section.)
If Summerheat disease presents with other morphological signs after emesis or purgation, treat it according to the protocols in the Cold Damage chapter.
If Summerheat disease manifests with hiccups (Yue Ni), macules (Fa Ban), or deteriorating sores/pustules (Chuang Dou Huai Hou), treat it according to the protocols in the Warmth Disease chapter. (The above four points were discussed by the Master.)
To prevent Heat diseases, Ji Huang (Acute Jaundice), and Zei Feng (Thief Wind), Ge Fen San (Kudzu Powder Dispersion) is used.
Ingredients: Ge Fen (Pulvis Puerariae) (2 sheng); Sheng Gan Di Huang (Dried Fresh Rhizoma Rehmanniae) (1 sheng); Xiang Chi (Prepared Fermented Soybean) (0.5 sheng).
Procedure: Grind into fine powder. After meals, take one fang cun bi (a square-inch measure). Mix with any of the following liquids: Niu Ru Mi Tang (Cow's Milk and Rice Decoction), Zhu Li Mi Yin (Bamboo Juice and Rice Drink), or Wu Mei Tang (Dark Plum Decoction). Take at will. For healthy individuals, take three times daily; for those with illness, take five times daily.
