The Hu-Huo disease presents with symptoms resembling Taiyang disease (a syndrome caused by pathogenic invasion of the Taiyang channel), and may sometimes arise from the transformation of Taiyang disease. Its manifestations include a silent demeanor with a desire to sleep, yet the eyes cannot close; restlessness when lying down or sitting up. Erosion in the throat is called "Huo" (Confusion); erosion in the yin regions (genitals and anus) is called "Hu" (Fox). The patient has no appetite and dislikes the smell of food; the complexion changes alternately between red, black, and white. If erosion occurs in the upper part (throat), hoarseness ensues, treated primarily with Gancao Xiexin Tang (Licorice Decoction for Draining the Epigastrium). (This formula is recorded in the Pi Syndrome chapter.) If erosion occurs in the lower part, dryness of the throat results, treated by washing with Kushen Tang (Sophora Root Decoction).
Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, 8 liang) Huaibai Pi (Cortex Gleditsiae Sinensis, 4 liang) Yelangya Gen (Radix Acanthopanacis Senticosi, 4 liang)
Chop the above ingredients, add five sheng of water, decoct to three and a half sheng, and use for washing.
If erosion occurs at the anus, fumigate with burnt Xionghuang (Realgar). (Use only Realgar, burn it, and fumigate the lower part.) If the patient's pulse is rapid, there is fever and slight irritability; silently desiring to lie down, with sweating. Within three to four days of onset, the eyes become red like those of a turtledove; after seven to eight days, the corners of both eyes turn black. If the patient can eat, it indicates that pus has formed; treat primarily with Chixiaodou Danggui San (Adzuki Bean and Angelica Powder).
Chixiaodou (Adzuki Beans, 1 sheng, soaked until sprouted then dried) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang)
Grind into fine powder, mix with Jiangshui (Sour Rice Water) and take two qian per dose, three times daily.
Pang Anshi stated: In Baihe Bing (Lily Disease), all meridians share one source, and thus all are affected by the pathology. The patient desires to eat but cannot; often silent; desires to lie down but cannot; desires to walk but cannot. Sometimes craving delicious food, sometimes repulsed by the smell of food; feeling cold without actual chills, feeling hot without actual heat; bitter taste in the mouth, dark red urine. Various medicines fail to cure it; taking medicine exacerbates symptoms, causing vomiting and diarrhea, as if bewitched. The body shape appears normal, but the pulse is slightly rapid. If headache occurs after urination, recovery takes sixty days; if no headache but feeling chilly, recovery takes forty days; if feeling comfortable but dizzy, recovery takes twenty days. These symptoms may appear before the illness starts, emerge four to five days after onset, or appear after twenty days or a month; treatment should follow the specific presentation.
For Baihe Bing following sweating therapy, use Baihe Zhimu Tang (Lily and Anemarrhena Decoction).
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 10 pieces) Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1.5 liang)
Wash Baihe first, soak overnight until white foam appears; discard the soaking water. Add one and a half sheng of clear spring water, decoct Baihe to obtain one sheng, discard dregs. Separately, decoct Zhimu in one sheng of spring water to obtain half a sheng, discard dregs. Combine the two decoctions and boil together to obtain one sheng; divide into three warm doses.
For Baihe Bing following purgative therapy, use Huashi Daizhe Tang (Talcum and Hematite Decoction).
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 10 pieces) Huashi (Talcum, 1.5 liang) Daizhe (Hematitum, 0.5 liang)
Soak Baihe in water overnight until white foam appears; discard water. Add one and a half sheng of spring water, decoct to obtain one sheng, discard dregs. Separately, decoct Huashi and Daizhe in one sheng of spring water to obtain half a sheng, discard dregs. Mix and re-boil to obtain one sheng; divide into three or four warm doses.
For Baihe Bing following emetic therapy, use Baihe Jizi Tang (Lily and Egg Yolk Decoction).
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 10 pieces) Jizi Huang (Ovi Galli Albumen, 2 yolks)
Wash Baihe, soak overnight until white foam appears; discard water. Add two sheng of spring water, decoct to obtain one sheng, discard dregs. Add Jizi Huang, stir well; divide into three warm doses.
For Baihe Bing not subjected to emesis, purgation, or sweating, where symptoms remain unchanged, use Baihe Dihuang Tang (Lily and Rehmannia Decoction).
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 10 pieces) Dihuang Zhi (Rehmanniae Radix Juice, 0.5 sheng)
Soak Baihe in water overnight until white foam appears; discard water. Add one and a half sheng of spring water, decoct to obtain one sheng, discard dregs. Add Dihuang Zhi, boil again to obtain one sheng and two he; divide into three warm doses. Stop administration once the disease is cured; do not continue.
For Baihe Bing unresolved for one month, transforming into thirst, wash with Baihe Tang (Lily Decoction).
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 1 sheng, washed as described above. Soak overnight until white foam appears; discard water.)
Add ten dou of water, boil several times, and wash the entire body. Avoid wind. Consume Bai Tang Bing (White Dough Sheet Soup), but do not add salt or chi (fermented soybeans). Bai Tang Bing refers to cut noodles boiled in water, rinsed, and eaten with hot soup.
If thirst persists, treat with Gualou Muli San (Trichosanthes Root and Oyster Shell Powder).
Gualou (Trichosanthis Radix, those without yellow veins) Muli Fen (Concha Ostreae Powder, equal parts)
Grind into fine powder, mix with water to form a measure of one cun bi, take three times daily.
For Baihe Bing transforming into fever, use Baihe Huashi San (Lily and Talcum Powder).
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 1 liang) Huashi (Talcum, 3 liang)
Grind into fine powder, mix with clear drink to form a measure of one cun bi, take three times daily. Mild laxation should occur, eliminating heat; if laxation has already occurred, discontinue use.
When Baihe Bing manifests in Yin aspects, rescue using Yang methods; when manifesting in Yang aspects, rescue using Yin methods. Attacking Yin when Yang signs are present, followed by inducing sweating, is contraindicated (Nì). Attacking Yang when Yin signs are present, followed by purgation, is also contraindicated.
