If a person sweats incessantly, this is Yang collapse (a condition of extreme depletion of Yang Qi), and the Qi is about to dissipate; therefore, it is correct to use tonification to consolidate. The prescription is as follows:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (1 liang), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (1 liang), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (3 qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (1 qian), Sang Ye (Mori Folium) (5 leaves), Chao Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fried) (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
[The brilliance of this prescription lies entirely in using Ren Shen and Dang Gui to tonify Qi, and using Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus) and Wu Wei Zi to consolidate Qi. Thus, tonification suffices to aid the effect of consolidation, and consolidation suffices to enhance the benefit of tonification. Moreover, with Sang Ye, an excellent herb for arresting sweating, acting as a mediator between tonification and consolidation, it neither leans too heavily towards consolidation nor towards tonification.]
When a person suffers from fever, it may be due to external contraction or internal injury. For external contraction, one must first disperse the pathogenic factor; only after the pathogen recedes should one tonify the healthy Qi, so that the healthy Qi is not harmed by the pathogen. If the fever is due to internal injury, the prescription is as follows:
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (1 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (1 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (2 qian), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus) (1 qian), Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (2 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
For patients with Liver Qi stagnation, taking one dose brings immediate relief. [It is miraculously effective for treating early-stage internal injuries.]
If the illness worsens during the day, accompanied by chills and fever, and is more severe than at night, this condition must be intercepted before dawn. The prescription is as follows:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (1 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (5 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1 qian), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) (1 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (3 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (3 qian), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (5 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (1 qian), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (0.5 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Another prescription:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (1 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (5 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (2 qian), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (1 liang), Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen) (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
If the illness worsens at night, accompanied by chills and fever, where there may be less chills and more heat, or more heat and less chills, feeling refreshed upon dawn but heavy upon dusk, this indicates severe deficiency of Yin Qi. The prescription is as follows:
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (1 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus) (4 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (3 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (3 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (3 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1 qian), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) (5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (5 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (3 qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (1 qian), Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen) (3 qian), Sheng He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, raw) (3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
The brilliance of this prescription lies in the use of Bie Jia, which is a substance of extreme Yin nature; it enters when encountering Yin and transforms when encountering Yang. Sheng He Shou Wu directly enters the Yin meridians and also attacks pathogens. Bai Jie Zi removes phlegm without consuming the True Yin Qi. How could it fail to achieve its effect? However, it must be taken at dusk, so that Yin Qi is consolidated and pathogens dare not enter.
