Discourse states: If sudden syncope occurs, with instantaneous loss of consciousness, body pulses moving, the condition resembling a corpse, hearing a whistling sound in the ears, warmth between the thighs, this is due to pathogenic qi obstructing the collaterals of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian, Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The Qi and Blood of these five collaterals are exhausted, Kidney Qi is weak, Jing-Blood (Essence and Blood) is insufficient, rushing Qi presses urgently upwards into the chest and diaphragm, Zong Qi (Pectoral Qi) gathers inversely, blood coagulates below the heart, Yang Qi sinks downwards, Yin Qi suddenly rises without interacting with Yang, leading to the separation of Yin and Yang. The body is warm with sweating; if Qi recovers, there is improvement; conversely, the whole body turns cyanotic and cold. This indicates disease entering the Zang organs leads to death, known as Corpse Syncope (Shi Jue). First, blow air into the left ear using a bamboo tube three times, then do the same for the right ear. Apply moxibustion and hot compresses to both hypochondriac regions. Place powder of Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome (Shichangpu, 石菖蒲) under the tongue and insufflate it into the nose. Also, puncture the medial side of the big toe, at a distance from the nail edge like the width of a leek leaf, insert one fen deep, retain the needle for three breaths; this acupoint is Yinbai (SP1), then withdraw. Puncture Yongquan (KI1) on the sole of the foot, using the above method. Puncture the upper part of the nail on the middle toe, causing bleeding, using the above method; this acupoint is Lidui (ST45). Puncture the medial side of the hand big toe (thumb), at a distance from the nail edge like the width of a leek leaf. Puncture Zhongchong (PC9) of the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian. Puncture Shenmen (HT7) at the end of the ulnar styloid process on the wrist. Cut hair from the left corner of the head, burn to ash, take with wine in a dose of one cun bi (approx. 3-5 grams); if unable to drink wine, administer by force, followed by Taiyi Shenyang Dan.
Taiyi Shenyang Dan (Formula missing.)
If there is no usual discomfort, but suddenly appearing dead, body motionless, silent and unaware, eyes closed unable to open, jaw clenched unable to speak, or seemingly conscious but averse to human voices, or merely feeling dizzy and faint, waking up after a while, this is due to excessive sweating depleting fluids, low blood volume, Qi merging into Blood, struggle between Qi and Blood, chaos of Yin and Yang. When Qi passes and Blood returns, Yin and Yang reconnect, and the person wakes up. This is called Yu Mao (Depression and Dizziness) or Blood Syncope (Xue Jue). This syndrome often occurs in women, but men can also have it. Baowei Tang and Cang Gong San are the primary treatments.
Baowei Tang
Bletilla Rhizome (Baowei, 白薇) (one liang) Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui, 当归) (one liang) Ginseng Root (Renshen, 人参) (half liang)

If sudden confusion and unconsciousness occur, or delirious speech, this is due to sudden fright, Heart Spirit having no support, Shen (Spirit) having no residence. If untreated for long, Yin and Yang contend with each other; either Yin Qi merges with Yang or Yang Qi merges with Yin, causing blockage of the nine orifices, resembling Corpse Syncope. Changpu San is the primary treatment.
Changpu San
Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome (Shichangpu, 石菖蒲) (one liang) Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) (one qian, ground)
Grind the above into fine powder. Mix with wine and take two qian, or take with water.
If sudden convulsions occur, eyes unable to move or speak, phlegm-rattle in the throat, constipation, chest fullness with desire to vomit, aversion to human voices, startling upon hearing voices, or occasional shouting, this results from sudden fright causing Qi accumulation without dispersal. Hidden Phlegm gathers in the Middle Jiao, dampness soaks the Spleen. Over time, Spleen Qi is depleted, wind moves in the four extremities. It is appropriate to first induce vomiting with Sheng Jin Wan, followed by Yuhu Wan. Stop when stool is unblocked. If heat signs are present, the pulse is surging and rapid, heat stagnates in the Heart. Tie Fen Wan is the primary treatment.

Grind the above into powder, make pills with ginger juice paste, size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take five pills with Ginger Decoction.
If previously healthy but suddenly experiencing convulsions, returning to normal after cessation, recurring after months or days, this is due to Yin and Yang losing their normal rhythm and Qi and Blood merging. This is called Epilepsy (Xian). Longchi Wan, Wuya San, and Duhuo Tang are the primary treatments.
Longchi Wan
Calculated Bovis Calculus (Niuhuang, 牛黄) (ground) Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) (ground, half qian each) Saiga Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao, 羚羊角) (shredded) Dragon Teeth (Longchi, 龙齿) Fossilized Bone (Longgu, 龙骨) Sheep Tooth (Yangchi, 羊齿) (calcined red, one fen each) Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) (ground, half liang) Snake Molt (She Tui, 蛇退) (stir-fried) Bombyx Batryticatus (Baijiangcan, 白僵蚕) (stir-fried, one fen each)
Grind the above into powder, mix with refined honey to make pills, size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take five pills with water, before bed.

Dry, burn with charcoal until smoke disappears, take out and grind to powder. Add another one qian of Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香), grind and mix. Take one cun bi mixed with water, twice daily.

Grind the above into powder. Take five qian per dose, add two zhan of water, decoct to one zhan, remove dregs, and take warm.
If the patient exhibits irregular joy and anger, stays alone behind closed doors, and is averse to human voices, this is because Yang Qi is constantly active but suddenly frustrated and difficult to resolve. Liver and Gallbladder Qi is stagnant and cannot extend, causing irregular emotions. This is called Yang Jue (Yang Syncope). Tie Luo Yin is suitable; avoid meat, and use Changpu San.
Tie Luo Yin (Formula missing.)
Changpu San (See above.)
If speech ignores kinship distinctions, or discards clothes and runs, climbs high and sings, this is due to excessive mental effort causing dispersion of Shen (Spirit) which fails to store. Or perhaps weeping, feeling absent-minded and unhappy. Excess of Shen leads to laughter, known as Mania (Kuang). Sheng Jin Wan is the primary treatment. Deficiency of Shen leads to sorrow. Lulu Zhu Dan is the primary treatment.
Sheng Jin Wan (Formula missing.)
Lulu Zhu Dan
Good Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) (one liang, crushed)
Place the above in a genuine glass vessel, expose to dew for forty-nine nights (rainy days do not count). Grind finely, add half qian of Calculated Bovis Calculus (Niuhuang, 牛黄), grind and mix. Add cooked honey to make pills, size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take one pill on an empty stomach with Ginseng Decoction.
