Treats conditions arising from those who were once rich but became poor, or once noble but became humble, as well as lifelong frustration, depression, and dissatisfaction. It is also effective for women suffering from emotional stagnation (the seven emotions: joy, anger, worry, thought, grief, fear, and fright), or nuns and widows experiencing long-term depression and lack of cheerfulness.
Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) (soaked in urine of a young boy to the height of one finger joint, left for seven days, then washed clean, dried, crushed, and stir-fried with vinegar; 1 jin). Baifushen (Poria with Hosta Root, excluding bark and heart, 4 liang) (soaked in human breast milk, exposed to sun during the day and dew at night for seven nights and days).
Grind the above two ingredients into fine powder. Mix with honey that has been refined (7 parts) and Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) paste made from fermented dough (3 parts). Form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill each time, at any time, dissolving it in boiling plain water.
Regular consumption regulates the spleen, opens up stagnation, and stimulates appetite.
Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) (soaked in urine of a young boy, dried, and stir-fried; 4 liang). Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (soaked in rice washing water, peeled, and stir-fried with bran; 4 liang). Fuxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma sourced from Fuzhou; 4 liang). Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) (4 liang, stir-fried with ginger juice). Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) (stir-fried; 4 liang). Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white pith removed; 2 liang). Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (stir-fried; 2 liang). Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus, seeds removed, pure flesh; 2 liang). Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (wine-stir-fried; 1.5 liang).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder and make water-habituated pills the size of sophora seeds. Take sixty pills each time after meals, washed down with plain water.
Tidal fever symptoms are divided into yin and yang categories. Morning tidal fever occurs from Yin hour to Shen hour, corresponding to twenty-five degrees of yang qi circulation. During this period, yang meridians are active, and heat resides in the yang aspect, governed by Lung Qi. Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) should be used to clear fire from the lungs. Evening tidal fever occurs from Shen hour to Yin hour, corresponding to twenty-five degrees of yin qi circulation. During this period, yin meridians are active, and heat resides in the yin aspect, governed by Kidney Qi. Therefore, Digupi (Lycii Cortex) is used to clear fire from the blood. Digupi clears Kidney fire and generally treats heat on the exterior; Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) clears fire from the pericardium and can also clear latent fire within the yin for cases of bone-steaming fever without sweat. Adding these two herbs to Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) is extremely effective for treating yin-type tidal fever. For women with bone-steaming tidal fever, adding these two herbs to Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) yields particularly excellent results. If tidal fever is due to Qi deficiency, use Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (3 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1.5 qian each). In severe cases, add Shufuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix) (0.5 fen); effectiveness is often seen after two or three doses, as sweet-warm herbs can eliminate great heat. If fever is due to Blood deficiency, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Digupi (Lycii Cortex) is extremely effective.
Treats hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed). Generally, all types of hemorrhage are caused by fire forcing blood upward, leading to erratic flow through incorrect vessels. The pulse will necessarily be Kou (cork-like, floating, large, and hollow). This formula governs such conditions.
Cases with body heat and a large pulse are difficult to treat. Hemorrhagic patients who also suffer from dysentery are easier to cure.
Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) (sliced thin), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Heishanzhiren (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried until black), Jiucaigen Ziranji (Fresh Juice of Allii Tuberosi Radix, thoroughly consumed/extracted). All in equal proportions.
Take 5 qian of the mixture each time, add 1.5 zhong of water, decoct until reduced to 0.7 zhong, and take warm.
Another prescription: For uncontrollable hematemesis, use Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) stir-fried until black. Pack it into a cow's gallbladder in the twelfth lunar month, retrieve it in spring, grind into powder. Take one fangcun bi (square-inch spoonful) each time, mixed with urine of a young boy. Effect is immediate (this is a "following treatment" method, i.e., treating according to the disease's nature).
Another prescription: For various hemorrhages, use Xueyutan (Carbonized Human Hair) burnt to ash but retaining its properties. Take 2 qian each time, mixed with rice drink. Bleeding stops immediately. For epistaxis, blow a small amount of the powder into the nostrils; the effect is miraculous.
