The term "Fire" refers to the vital force; without it, Heaven cannot generate living things, and without it, humans cannot sustain life. This discusses True Fire. If there is a decline or loss of Postnatal True Fire, pathogenic fire will flourish, leading to Deficient Fire, Excess Fire, Damp-Fire, Wind-Fire, Stagnant Fire, Yin Fire, Fire of the Five Zang Organs, Fire of the Six Fu Organs, and Fire that wanders without adhering to specific meridians. However, generally, one should not excessively administer cold agents nor seek to completely eliminate fire. It is like having no fire under a pot; how can the rice cook? One can only temporarily suppress hyperactive fire to treat the branch (symptoms), and then regulate based on the cause to treat the root. Then fire will return to its respective meridians, and the world will remain cool and peaceful. Regarding diseases manifesting from fire, the *Classic* states: Various heat conditions causing mental confusion (Mao) and convulsions (Yuan); various cases of locked jaw, shivering, and trembling, as if losing spiritual control over the body; various rebellious qi rushing upward; various irritability, mania, and transgression of norms; various edema, pain, soreness, fright, and alarm—all belong to Fire. Various pain, itching, and sores belong to Heart Fire. Mao refers to mental confusion. Yuan refers to muscle twitching and convulsions. Pathogenic heat damaging the spirit causes Mao; hyperactive Yang damaging blood causes Yuan; this relates to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian. Locked jaw, shivering, and trembling, as if losing spiritual control, occur because the Heart stores the Spirit and governs Fire. When a qi becomes extremely excessive, the element that controls it counteracts it. Thus, when Heart Fire is extreme, Cold generates internally, causing shivering and locked jaw, as if losing the spirit that guards the body; this relates to the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Rebellious qi rushing upward is a sign of Fire's nature to flare upwards. Irritability, mania, and transgression occur because external heat causes limb restlessness, and internal heat causes mental agitation. Mania is chaotic and uncontrolled. Transgression is violating etiquette and norms. Since the Kidney governs Willpower, when Heart Fire is strong, Kidney Water declines, leading to loss of will, mania, restlessness, and inner heat. Furthermore, manifestations of Fire include: Fire entering the Lung causes vexation (Fan); Fire entering the Kidney causes restlessness (Zao). Edema occurs because internal heat stagnates Yang Qi. Pain and soreness indicate Fire in the meridians. Fright and alarm indicate Fire in the viscera. All are related to Fire. Although edema and soreness often belong to Cold-Dampness, and fright and unrest often belong to Deficiency, it is said: Heat with pathogens involves internal heat and restlessness; Rootless Fire involves external heat and restlessness. Internal heat results in turbid urine; Rootless Fire results in copious clear urine. For sores, excess Fire causes pain, while mild Fire causes itching; all belong to the Heart. The Heart is Ministerial Fire (Jun Huo), and the Mingmen is Assistant Fire (Xiang Huo). Although there are two fires, in terms of Five Elements, both belong to Heat. The principle of Five Elements is that Yin contains Yang, and Yang contains Yin. Solitary Yin does not grow; solitary Yang does not form. When an entity possesses complete attributes, the Five Elements mutually nourish each other, which is called Harmony. If they mutually overcome, it leads to decline, disorder, and disaster. Therefore, less Water and more Fire indicates Excess Yang and Deficient Yin, resulting in Heat disease; more Water and less Fire indicates Excess Yin and Deficient Yang, resulting in Cold disease. Water is born from Metal and can moisten the Mother's dryness; Fire is born from Wood but can harm the Mother's form. Hence, Li Fire is easily seen as weapons; Water above Fire is the Hexagram Ji Ji (After Completion); Water below Fire is Wei Ji (Before Completion). This is profound truth. Understanding this allows one to see the origin of Fire and its subtleties. Fire is Qi that has lost balance. When the Five Zang and Six Fu organs are balanced, Ying and Wei are harmonious, and meridians flow smoothly; where would Fire come from? Once normal limits are lost, collision and impact create Fire. Danxi said: Excess Qi is Fire. There are diseases originating from the meridian itself, such as Anger generating Liver Fire, Fatigue generating Spleen Fire. There are those involving Five Element mutual overcoming, such as excessive Heart Fire overcoming Lung Metal, or excessive Liver Fire overcoming Spleen Earth. There are transmissions between Zang and Fu organs, such as Liver transferring heat to the Gallbladder causing bitter taste, or Heart transferring heat to the Small Intestine causing strangury and retention. There are also transmissions from other meridians and combined diseases of multiple meridians. Assistant Fire originates from the Liver and Kidney; Deficient Fire arises from exhaustion; Excess Fire stems from hyperactivity and harm; Dry Fire is rooted in Blood Deficiency; Damp Fire results from Damp-Heat; Stagnant Fire is due to suppression. There is also Nameless Fire, with no meridian to trace and no pulse/symptom pattern to identify, causing sudden illness and death. Among all diseases, Fire diseases are numerous and must be carefully examined. There are purgatives used as purgatives, such as Da Huang, Huang Qin, Huang Lian. There are dispersants used as purgatives, such as Chai Hu, Ge Gen for raising Yang and scattering Fire. There are tonics/nourishers used as purgatives, such as Di Huang, Tian Dong, strengthening the Master of Water to control the Sunlight (excessive Fire). There are tonics used as purgatives, such as Ren Shen, Gan Cao, which are holy medicines for clearing Fire.
