When a child reaches three hundred and sixty days, the knee bones mature, marking the time when they can begin to walk. Children of several years old who cannot walk suffer from insufficient congenital Kidney Essence (Yuan). Bones belong to the Kidney and are nourished by marrow. If Kidney Qi is deficient, it cannot fill the marrow and solidify the bones, resulting in weakness and inability to walk. Others may have deep confinement in curtained rooms, lacking exposure to wind and sunlight, or being held constantly, preventing the stretching of muscles and bones, thus making walking difficult. Some suffer from frequent illnesses after leaving the womb, leading to deficiency of both Liver and Kidney. Liver deficiency causes weak sinews, and Kidney deficiency causes soft bones, rendering them unable to walk. Others may have damaged the Spleen and Stomach by overeating sweet and fatty foods, cutting off the source of transformation and generation, leading to Gan syndrome (Infantile Malnutrition). As Qi and Blood become increasingly exhausted, walking becomes impossible. These cases should be treated according to symptoms, and recovery is possible.
