Effective. For relapse after epilepsy recovery, use Duanxian Dan. For chronic epilepsy causing Qi and Blood deficiency, use Huohu Dan.
General stiffness of the body is called "Jing" (Spasm); unresponsiveness all day distinguishes between Gang Jing (Yang Spasm) and Rou Jing (Yin Spasm).
Gang Jing presents first with delirium before onset, treated by inducing sweating; Rou Jing presents first with cold limbs before onset, treated by releasing the muscle layer.
Rou Jing uses Lizhong Tang or Mahuang Gegen Tang;
Rou Jing uses Lizhong Tang or Sansheng Yin; Gang Jing uses Mahuang Gegen Tang.
Generally, Duanxian Dan or Xiao Xuming Tang can be used.
Duanxian Dan and Xiao Xuming Tang are detailed in the Miscellaneous Diseases and Shanghan sections.
Ke Wu (External Shock)
Ke Wu refers to sudden fright caused by contact with foreign objects.
Insufficient Heart Qi leads to fright upon encountering people or objects; Cold in the Spleen causes pain and frequent night crying.
Symptoms resemble epilepsy but without eye rolling; foaming at the mouth, convulsions, wheezing, abdominal pain; treat with Xiong She San or Qianjin Longdan Tang.
Xiong She San: Realgar (Xionghuang) one qian, Resina Draconis (Ruxiang) five fen, Moschus (Shexiang) one zi, ground into powder. One zi per dose, mixed with blood from a rooster's comb and administered. Cover the infant with the mother's clothing to cure. Alternatively, use Gouteng San, Qianjin Longdan Tang, or Baoming Dan. Externally, apply powder of Caulis Cinnamomi (Zaoxintu) and Earthworm (Qiuyin) equal parts mixed with vinegar as pills, rubbing on the head and five centers (palms, soles, chest). Refer to Night Crying section. For shock from horse sweat odor or horse neighing, burn horse tail hair and smoke frequently near the infant's face until cured. Or first administer Suhexiang Wan with ginger decoction, then make pills the size of an egg from fermented soybean paste, rub on fontanelle and soles 5-6 times, then navel area. If hairs appear when opened, discard.
Tian Diao (Heavenly Hook)
External Heavenly Wind combined with internal Heat-Phlegm; Phlegm arises from the nursing mother consuming excessive sour and salty foods.
Tian Diao is a Yang syndrome caused by the mother's consumption of alcohol, fried, salty, and sour foods, transmitting toxins through milk, causing Heat in the infant's Heart and Lung, stagnation of Phlegm and Qi, triggered by external Heavenly Wind. Sudden upward gaze and stiff body resemble a fish hooked, hence the name.
High fever, convulsions, eyes rolling back like possession;
Severe fever, convulsions, limb jerking, eye rolling, crying or laughing, mood swings resembling possession.
Severe cases show blue fingernails; generally use Gouteng San and Baoming Dan.
Gouteng San: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) and Cornu Rhinocerotis (Xijiao) each five fen, Scorpio (Quanxie) and Rhizoma Gastrodiae (Tianma) each two fen, Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Gancao) one fen, decocted and taken warm. For excess Wind-Heat, use Baoming Dan; for excess Phlegm, use Baolong Wan; for Heat-Phlegm, use Tun Tan Wan.
For concurrent food stagnation, regulate the Stomach and promote digestion.
For stagnation with fright, hot and hard abdomen, pulsating during sleep, use Kuanre Yin to purge foul stool, then regulate the Spleen and Stomach. Do not mistake for Convulsive Disease.
Nei Diao (Internal Hook)
Nei Diao involves internal cramping pain (intestinal hook qi), caused by fetal fright and wind (stagnation of wind in the womb plus fright).
Red veins in eyes, opisthotonos, black lips, supine crying, swollen genitals. Vomiting/diarrhea formulas with convulsions indicate severe internal/external attack; Zhibao Gouteng Gao regulates Qi, calms fright, and dispels wind internally and externally.
For severe abdominal pain, supine crying, cyanotic face, cold limbs, rice-water urine due to Fright-Wind Nei Diao, use Gouteng Gao: Resina Draconis (Ruxiang) and Resina Burseraceae (Moyao) each three qian, Radix Aucklandiae (Muxiang) and Rhizoma Curcumae Longae (Jianghuang) each four qian, Semen Momordicae (Mubiezi) eleven pieces, ground into powder, formed into cakes with honey, stored in a clay jar. One or two pills per dose, taken with Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Changpu) and Gouteng decoction. For scrotal swelling and constipation, use Guiniu San. These are Qi-regulating and Wind-dispelling agents. For severe fright, use Dingpo Wan to calm.
Panchang (Coiled Intestine) pain involves bending waist, dry crying, forehead sweating; similar to Nei Diao but distinct. Ancient formula uses Bai Doukou, Sha Ren, Qing Pi, Chen Pi, Xiang Fu, Ezhu, Gancao equal parts, taken with Zisu decoction. Worm infestation is similar but involves heart-pain, closing eyes while crying, vomiting clear saliva, emaciation, alternating cold/heat, silence, periodic attacks; treat with Huachong Wan. For all stagnation pain, Panchang, and worm pain, use Chenru Yinggan Wan: Agarwood (Chenxiang), Resina Draconis (Ruxiang), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xingren), Radix Aucklandiae (Muxiang), Flos Caryophylli (Dingxiang) each one qian, Fructus Myristicae (Roudoukou) one, Caulis Pini (Baicaoshuang) one fen, Semen Crotonis Tiglii (Badou) fourteen pieces, ground, cooked in wine, mixed with beeswax into green bean-sized pills. Stroke aphonia resembles these three conditions.
Panchang, worm disease, and stroke all resemble Nei Diao, but stroke aphonia is distinct; treatment is same as adults. For post-stroke aphonia, use Muxiang, Chenpi, Gancao decoction to swallow Fei'er Wan (contains Huanglian to remove evil blood from Heart orifices). For Lung Wind with wheezing and phlegm, staring eyes, use Ejiao, Zisu, Wumei, Renshen decoction. Ejiao nourishes Spirit, best for misaligned pupils after convulsions.
Shan Qi (Hernia)
Often congenital; caused by father's heat drugs causing lower Jiao Qi stagnation, mother's crying allowing Cold into fetus, or sitting on damp ground.
Excessive crying inhales Cold into Kidney Meridian.
Frequent crying inhales Cold, Small Intestine hook pain transmits to Kidney Meridian. Also includes Mu Shen, Kidney swelling, abscess, hernia, Ben Tun, Shan Jia, same as adult medicine.
Cyanotic face, foaming, scrotal swelling;
Severe urinary difficulty, painful scrotal swelling: apply Dilong feces mixed with Gancao juice. For Wind-Heat external genital redness/swelling, crying day/night, peeling like eggshell, recur: apply Lao Shanmu ash mixed with Nifen and sesame oil. Effective.
Lower abdominal pain radiating to back;
All hernias due to Kidney Deficiency, Cold-Damp invading Bladder meridian, lingering causing swollen/hard scrotum. Treatment: First dredge and promote, then expel Cold and warm Zang organs. Moxibustion on acupoints. Only Mu Shen, abscess, toxin entering Kidney meridian becomes pus over time. Treat externally with detoxifying plasters, internally with dispersing/toxin-expelling/diuretic herbs.
First use Guidou Guiniu San: Rougui, Qianniuge each five qian, Danggui, Dahuang, Taoren each two qian half, Quanxie one qian. One qian per dose with honey. Bian Zheng (Transformation and Steaming)
Bian means Qi rising, Zheng means Heat steaming.
Bian transforms the Five Zang; Zheng nourishes the Six Fu. Thus Bian raises Qi, Zheng generates body heat.
Eight Zhengs and Ten Bians grow Qi and Blood.
Newborns have form but immature Zang-Fu/Qi-Blood/Spirit. Every 32 days is a Bian, every 64 days is a Zheng. Temperament changes at each Bian; white spot on upper lip center indicates this.
32 days: 1st Bian, Gui Water, Foot Shaoyin Kidney, essence.
64 days: 1st Zheng, 2nd Bian, Ren Water, Foot Taiyang Bladder, ears/tailbone cold.
96 days: 3rd Bian, Ding Fire, Hand Shaoyin Heart, spirit, joy.
128 days: 2nd Zheng, 4th Bian, Bing Fire, Hand Taiyang Small Intestine, sweating/mild fright.
160 days: 5th Bian, Yi Wood, Foot Jueyin Liver, soul, laughter.

256 days: 4th Zheng, 8th Bian, Geng Metal, Hand Yangming Large Intestine, skin heat/sweat.
288 days: 9th Bian, Ji Earth, Foot Taiyin Spleen, Yi/Zhi.
320 days: 5th Zheng, 10th Bian, Wu Earth, Foot Yangming Stomach, no eating/intestinal pain/vomiting.
Pericardium and Sanjiao have no shape, thus no Bian/Zheng.
Ten Bians/Five Zhengs follow heaven-earth numbers. Then will/language/emotions develop.
After 10 Bians, +64 days = Great Zheng 1 (384 days): meridians/limbs mature, holding/walking.
+64 days = Great Zheng 2 (448 days): language/will change.
+64 days = Great Zheng 3 (512 days): Bian Zheng complete, speech/standing/eating solid, sinews/bones strong.
Strong constitution: silent/no symptoms. Weak constitution: Zheng disease.
Mild: tidal fever/sweat resembling fright, resolves in 5 days.
Severe: high fever, chaotic rapid pulse, vomiting/sweating/restlessness/thirst, resolves in 7-8 days, resembles Shanghan. Post-Zheng cold invasion: Liver heat (red eyes), Lung heat (cough/chills), treat accordingly.
Treatment favors mildness, slight sweating/purging.
No sweat/heat: slight sweating. Vomit/purge: stop slightly. Do not abuse treatment. Use Pinghe Yinzi: Fuling one qian half, Renshen, Gancao each five fen, Shengma two fen. Weak constitution add Baizhu one qian. Take 3 days before/after Bian Zheng to prevent disease, also within 100 days. For vomiting/diarrhea/refusal to nurse/crying, use Heqi San: Muxiang, Xiangfu, Houpo, Renshen, Chenpi, Huoxiang, Gancao equal parts, Ginger/Jujube. For retained milk, use Zishuang Wan.
