The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: When the Lung Qi is harmonious, the nose can distinguish between fragrant and foul odors. It also states: When Gallbladder heat transfers to the brain, it causes nasal pungency and *Bi Yuan* (Nasal Sinusitis/Ozena), which may progress to *Xu* (Epistaxis/Nosebleed) and dim vision. From this, we know that an initial contraction of Wind-Cold pathogenic factors, if prolonged, transforms into Heat. When Heat stagnates, it causes Qi obstruction and nasal congestion.
Invisible Qi circulates in the nose; when affected by Wind-Cold, there is nasal congestion and a heavy voice. When Gallbladder heat transfers to the brain, *Bi Yuan* arises. Excessive drinking leads to nasal redness and damages Lung Qi. Clear pathogens stagnating for a long time cause Lung Qi obstruction, resulting in nasal swelling resembling red peppers. At this stage, the method of venting the upper Jiao and dispersing stagnation should be employed.

The Mouth belongs to the Spleen Meridian, and the Tongue belongs to the Heart Meridian. When the Tongue is harmonious, one naturally knows the five flavors. Liver Heat causes sour taste in the mouth; Heart Heat causes bitter taste; Spleen Heat causes sweet taste and may generate *Gan* (Infantile Malnutrition/Mouth Sores). Kidney Heat causes salty taste; Deficiency causes bland taste; Cold also causes salty taste; consuming sour food clarifies these distinctions. Lung Heat causes spicy/pungent taste; Internal Heat causes bitter taste; dry mouth with desire to drink are all caused by Heat.
**Heart and Spleen Stagnant Heat**, termed "Tongue Generating Gan," presents with red and dry lips.
