The sister-in-law of Guo Maoxun, Lady Jinhua, had not eaten for seven days after childbirth. She first complained of headache. After the headache subsided, heartache arose. Then eye pain developed, feeling like cutting or stabbing, recurring without a moment's rest. When the headache was severe, she wished for a large stone to press on her head; after a long while, it gradually settled. When heartache arose, she scratched the wall with ten fingers until blood filled her palms. After the pain subsided, eye pain returned, and she dug at her eyes with both hands. This continued for ten days without relief, and no remedy could be found among the physicians. Administer half a pill of Heilong Dan (Black Dragon Pill); the disease eased slightly. At midnight, another dose was given. She closed her eyes and slept as usual. By dawn, she passed a bowel movement, approximately three sheng, resembling locust eggs. The three ailments were reduced by half. At the hour of Si (9-11 AM), she passed stool again as before, and then suddenly recovered completely. (See the section on "Postpartum Failure of Blood Discharge" for the formula of Heilong Dan.)
