Eyelashes growing inward into the center of the eyeball is what is referred to as "inverted eyelashes and curled lashes" (Daojie Quanmao).
[Li Dongyuan] Shenxiao Mingmu Tang (Divine Efficacy Brightening Eye Decoction): Treats urgency and tension at the eyelid margin, leading to inverted eyelashes and curled lashes damaging the eye, as well as redness and ulceration of the entire upper eyelid, pain in the cornea, dim vision, continuous flow of cold tears during the day, and excessive eye discharge filling the eye at night.

Another prescription adds Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin Gen) (1 qian).

Shenxiao Huangqi Tang (Divine Efficacy Astragalus Decoction): Treats generalized numbness and insensitivity, as well as urgency and shrinking of both eyes, photophobia, difficulty opening due to astringency, weak vision, eye pain and blurriness where the hand cannot approach, lackluster eyes, or a sensation of heat like fire in the eyes. Taking it five or six times yields divine efficacy.
Astragali Radix (Huang Qi) (2 liang), Ginseng Radix (Ren Shen) (deprived of rhizome, 1 liang), Licorice Root (Gan Cao) (roasted, 1 liang), Viticis Fructus (Man Jing Zi) (chopped, 2 qian), White Peony Root (Bai Shao Yao) (1 liang), Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi) (deprived of white pith, half liang).

If there is dysuria with strangury, add Alismatis Rhizoma (Ze Xie) 5 fen. If there are signs of severe heat, add Phellodendri Cortex (Huang Bo) 3 qian, soaked in wine four times then stir-fried. If there is numbness and insensitivity, even if there is heat, do not use Huang Bo; instead, add more Huang Qi 1 liang. If the eyes are shrunken, remove Bai Shao Yao; avoid alcohol, vinegar, wet noodles, strong spices, scallions, leeks, garlic, and diuretic raw/cold/hard foods. If numbness is heavy and severe, add Bai Shao Yao 1 liang and Akebia Caulis (Mu Tong) 1 liang.
Boyun Tang (Cloud-Piercing Decoction): In the sixth month of Wushen year, Commander Xu suffered from an eye disease, developing two black-and-white nebulae under the upper eyelids, feeling astringent and difficult to open, with urgent but painless eyes. The cun pulse on both hands was fine and tight, but forceful and powerless upon deep pressure. This indicates that the Foot-Taiyang Bladder channel was scorched by the Ministerial Fire of the Gate of Life, reversing its flow to create cold-water nebulae and cold membranes obscuring the cornea. Prescribe the following single dose for divine efficacy. External symptoms include yawning, propensity to sadness and forgetfulness, tearing when sneezing, reddish yet pale complexion, ability to eat but constipation, frequent urination with shortness of breath, rebellious qi causing asthma.

The first formula treats inverted eyelashes and curled lashes. The latter three formulas treat urgency and shrinking of the eyelid margin. Urgency and shrinking of the eyelid margin are precursors to inverted eyelashes and curled lashes; hence, these formulas are appended afterwards. Generally, Yang deficiency leads to urgency of the eyelid margin, while Yin deficiency leads to dilation of the pupil. Therefore, Li Dongyuan treats urgency of the eyelid margin using Ren Shen and Huang Qi to tonify Qi as sovereign drugs, assisted by acrid herbs to disperse, avoiding sour-astringent herbs like Bai Shao Yao and Wu Wei Zi. To treat dilated pupils, he uses Shu Di Huang to nourish Blood as sovereign drug, assisted by sour herbs to astringe, avoiding herbs like Wygwiae Fructus (Chong Wei Zi) and Celosiae Semen (Qing Xiang Zi).
For treating inverted eyelashes, use powder of Wumingyi (a mineral), roll it in paper to make a taper, ignite it, extinguish it when reaching the herb powder, and smoke the eye with the fumes; the eyelashes will naturally stand up.
[Bencao] Treats inverted eyelashes and blepharitis (rotten eyelid margins).
Bombyx Batryticatus (Can Sha) (1 liang), Verdigris (Guo Dan) (5 qian).
Slowly boil the above two ingredients into a paste, add Calomelas (Qing Fen) 5 fen, boil until black, and wash frequently with soup water.
[Ruizhutang Jingyanfang] Qingdai San (Indigo Powder): Extremely effective for inverted eyelashes.
Cirsii Japonici Herba (Ci Ji), Ziziphi Spinosae Spina (Zao Ji Zhen), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi), Indigo Naturalis (Qing Dai).
Grind equal parts into fine powder. For left eye inverted lashes, hold water in mouth and insufflate into the left nostril. For right eye inverted lashes, insufflate into the right nostril.
[Shanjusi Yao] For inverted eyelashes, pluck out the curled lashes, apply blood from lice into the eye; it heals after several applications.
[Li Dongyuan] Inverted eyelashes and curled lashes arise from urgency and skin contraction of the eye. Internally latent heat attacks the outward flow of Yin Qi. One must clear internal heat and fire pathogens to relax the eyelids, allowing eyelashes to emerge and nebulae to recede. Manually pull the inner eyelid outward, puncture with a triangular needle to release bright red blood, and press the needle hole immediately with the thumbnail of the left hand; it heals instantly.
