[Qian Yi] Edema disease involves Kidney Heat transmitting to the Bladder. Excessive Heat rebels against the Spleen and Stomach. Spleen Deficiency fails to control Kidney Water, which instead overacts on Spleen Earth. The Spleen follows the water flow. Since the Spleen governs the four limbs, the pathogenic factor flows and wanders, causing edema of the whole body and face. If accompanied by wheezing, the condition is severe. Why? Because Kidney Water overacts and retreats from Spleen Earth, it then overacts on Heart Fire. Heart then overacts on Lung Metal. Lung Metal is controlled by Heart Fire, hence wheezing. One may ask: Heart controls Lung, Lung is already deficient, why is there excess wheezing? The answer is twofold: First, severe Lung wheezing indicates rebellion of the Five Zang organs' Qi. Second, Kidney Water Qi ascends and invades the Lung laterally, causing severe wheezing. Both are difficult to treat.
[Ming Yi Zhi Zhang] For Water-Qi Edema: Moxibustion on Fen Shui (Water Dividing) acupoint, 3 moxa cones.
[Jiegu] Gan disease (Malnutrition Syndrome) is a pediatric disorder or results from prolonged vomiting and diarrhea. Physicians mistakenly administer harsh purgatives. Children are prone to deficiency-excess patterns, leading to Stomach Deficiency and loss of Body Fluids. Internal Empty Heat arises, consuming muscles externally. When one Zang is deficient, all Zang become weak. Symptoms include swollen eyelids, abdominal distension, variable stool color, progressive emaciation, and chronic non-healing. This is due to Wind Accumulation in the Intestines and Stomach. The method should be to first use Xuan Feng San (Disperse Wind Powder) to guide out accumulation, then tonify the Mother organ of the affected Zang according to its root.
[Qian Yi] All Gan diseases should be treated by tonifying the Mother organ of the affected Zang and administering Gan-specific medicines. For Cold patterns, Mu Xiang Wan (Costus Pill) is used; for Heat patterns, Hu Huang Lian Wan (Coptis and Picrorhiza Pill) is used. Gan disease internal manifestation includes swollen eyes, abdominal distension, variable stool color, frothy green-white stools, and progressive weakness. This is a Cold pattern, suitable for Shi Jun Zi Wan (Quisqualis Pill).

[Danxi] A wealthy family's son, 14 years old, yellow complexion, voracious appetite, easily hungry, requires meat to feel full, diarrhea for one month. Pulse: both hands large. Surprisingly not emaciated or fatigued. Suspected Damp-Heat. Spleen confinement usually causes poor appetite, but he was robust and ate much, without thirst. I suspected Gan parasites causing dysentery. Examined stool: confirmed Ascaris lumbricoides. While I was away, a local pediatrician advised using anti-parasitic drugs and forbidding accumulation-resolving drugs. I promised to check upon return to stop diarrhea, but did not follow through. Next spring-summer transition, diarrhea recurred, no abdominal pain, dry mouth. I said: "This is due to treating parasites last year without treating Gan." Prescribed Gan-Heat clearing medicine, taken with concentrated Bai Zhu Tang. Diarrhea stopped in three days. Half a month later, visited his home, saw him very thin.
