Two feet unable to walk, extremely painful, pulse rapid, face red, tongue crimson. Touching the legs and feet, the patient scolds in pain when hands approach. It is known that dampness and blood stasis have invaded the meridians. Ten old bricks were sought, heated red-hot in fire, and ten broken straw shoes were placed on the hot bricks. Child's urine was poured onto them to create steam and water vapor, which was used to rinse the two feet. The feet were covered with cloth bundles. When the brick heat diminished, the feet were stepped on the straw shoes to be fumigated with heat. This method was repeated twice. Internally, five doses of medicine were taken, and the symptoms disappeared. Internal prescription:
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 4 qian, Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) 3 qian, Danpi (Moutan Cortex) 2 qian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) 5 pieces, Chuan Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) 2 qian, Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus) 2 qian, Yiyiren (Coicis Semen) 4 qian, Taoren (Persicae Semen) 2 qian, Longdancao (Gentianae Scabrae Radix) 2 qian, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 2 qian, Digupi (Lycii Cortex) 2 qian, Xiangjiapi (Alangi Cortex) 2 qian, Lulutong (Liquidambaris Fructus) 5 pieces.
This fumigation method guides damp-heat downward; the internal medicine uses a method to leach out dampness to unblock the meridians.
Female, 50 years old.
Head feels heavy and painful, bridge of nose and back both painful, and waist distension for three or four years. Pulse slow and soft, complexion dull and dark, head floating edema, tongue covered with thin greasy coating, lips dry and cracked. This is dampness obstructing the ascending and descending mechanisms, purely affecting the Qi level. The middle jiao (Spleen and Stomach) is not smooth, causing waist and head pain, accompanied by heaviness. Prescription:
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 3 qian, Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) 2 qian, Baixianpi (Dictamni Cortex) 2 qian, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 3 qian, Zheng Xizhuang 3 qian [Note: Likely a local herb or typo], Yujin (Curcumae Radix) 2 qian, Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) 2 qian, Weilingxian (Syneilesidis Rhizoma) 2 qian, Jili (Tribuli Fructus) 2 qian, Jingxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum) 3 qian, Peilan (Eupatorii Herba) 2 qian, Bidengqie (Galangal Fruit) 2 qian, Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) 2 qian, Jiang Zao (Ginger and Jujube) each 2 pieces decocted together.
Instructed to take three or four packs, and instructed to use 4 liang of Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), place it in the stove to smoke, and the patient inhales the smoke while sitting or lying in bed. Following this method, nasal bridge pain ceased, head heaviness resolved, waist distension alleviated, and much yellow phlegm was expectorated, but both ears rang. It was judged that stubborn phlegm still blocked the orifices. Modified prescription:
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 4 qian, Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 4 qian, Yujin (Curcumae Radix) 3 qian, Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) 2 qian, Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) 2 qian, Jingxing 2 qian [Note: Likely typo], Ge Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum) 1.5 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 2 qian, Jiezi (Brassicae Semens) 2 qian, Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) 2 qian, Sigualuo (Trichosanthes Caulis) 3 qian, Lulutong (Liquidambaris Fructus) 4 pieces.
Instructed to take four doses, no longer using Cangzhu fumigation. Additionally, boil a bundle of Shuilingxian (Primulae Decussatae Herba) in water for bathing. Following all previous methods, headache and waist pain reduced by two-thirds, but limbs felt weak and tired, reluctant to walk, epigastric fullness and discomfort. Changed prescription:
Jinchai Shihu (Dendrobii Nigricantis Caulis), Peilan (Eupatorii Herba), Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Yiyiren (Coicis Semen), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Juluo (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Xixiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Lu Jiaoshuang (Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum Preparatum) each 2 qian, Yuzhu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) 3 qian, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) 3 qian, Danpi (Moutan Cortex) 1.5 qian, Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum Preparatum) 3 qian, Sigualuo (Trichosanthes Caulis) 3 qian, Hongzao (Jujubae Fructus) 2 pieces.
Take another four doses. Externally, stew one liang of complete Xixiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) with seven eggs, like stewing tea eggs, for one hour, then remove. Eat two per day, cured after four or five times.
(50) Spontaneous sweating non-stop
Male, 50 years old.
Profuse sweating in summer, worse at night, so much that it flows in grooves where he lies on the bed. Feels body heat, likes opening windows for ventilation, complains if windows are closed. Took Mahuang Gen (Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma), Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi), Muli (Concha Ostreae), Fuxiaomai (Tritici Levis Fructus), etc., but sweating increased. Complexion slightly red, diet normal, pulse deep, both Cun positions show surging, tongue coating faintly yellow, sweating profuse, hot to touch. Known as Kidney Heat, not deficiency sweating. Saved with Zhibai Dihuang Tang (Anemarrhenae, Phellodendri et Rehmanniae Decoction). After one dose, night sweating stopped, sleep peaceful.
Follow-up: Cun pulse surging, still deep. Added to original formula:
Sheng Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 3 qian, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) 2 qian, Xian Shihu (Dendrobii Nigricantis Caulis) 3 qian.
After taking, sweating stopped. Only spirit weak and tired, yawning often, sleepy. I considered his pores wide open, definitely Qi deficiency and Blood loss. Sweat is the fluid of the Heart, must nourish Ying (Nutrient) Qi. Changed prescription:
Beiqi (Astragali Radix) 3 qian, Beifeng 2 qian [Note: Likely Fangfeng/Saposhnikoviae Radix typo], Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 2 qian, Szaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) 2 qian, Baihe (Lilii Bulbus) 2 qian, Puhuang Hui (Pollen Typhae Carbonized) decocted together.
After two doses, no more yawning, sleeps with eyes closed, looks like deep sleep. But flesh feels cold, believed to be atmospheric Qi failing to warm blood. Instructed to find old steamer cloth (used for steaming buns for over a year), boil in water, mix with Puhuang Hui (Pollen Typhae Carbonized) to take. Also took Guipi Wan (Restore the Spleen Pill) on the left side, then fully recovered.
Male, 37 years old.
Sweating non-stop for six months. Pulse floating and unstable, pressing to bone does not respond, checking reverse Guan position also hard to feel, and does not match normal breathing, difficult to judge. Thought of Liu Yi Gu Biao Tang (Six-One Exterior-Stabilizing Decoction) from Famous Doctors' Verified Prescriptions for treating sweating, borrowed it for use.
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 6 liang, Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 1 liang. Decoct once in water, divide into six doses, take three times daily.
Changed prescription after two days, said sweating reduced but restless at night. Modified prescription:
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 3 qian, Beiqi (Astragali Radix) 4 qian, Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi), Muli (Concha Ostreae) each 2 qian, Szaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) 1 qian, Baiziren (Platycladi Semen) 1 qian, Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) 2 qian, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) 2 qian, Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) 3 qian, Wuwei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 2 qian.
Because sweat is the fluid of the Heart, thus calming Heart and Kidney.
Follow-up said sweating and sleep greatly improved, and reported habitual nocturnal emission. Instructed to regularly take Jin Suo Gu Jing Wan (Golden Lock Essence-Stabilizing Pill), later reported cured.
Male, age unknown.
Head sweating non-stop, worse during meals. Cun pulse floating and rapid alternating, Guan position does not respond, tongue slippery lacking Stomach Qi. Judged as Stomach Heat, treated with Yu Nu Jian (Jade Woman Decoction) modified.
Yuzhu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) 3 qian, Xian Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) 2 qian, Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) 2 qian, Duan Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum Calcined) 4 qian, Xian Shihu (Dendrobii Nigricantis Caulis) 2 qian.
After two doses, less sweating, but thirsty at night. Instructed to simmer 4 liang of fresh lean meat wrapped in fresh lotus leaves several times. Follow-up pulse normalized, only tongue edges red, center faintly yellow. Knew there was slight heat, bought Yangshen (Panax Notoginseng or American Ginseng depending on context, here likely Xi Yang Shen/American Ginseng) to brew as tea, fully recovered.
The above three cases of spontaneous sweating are reflections on observing pulse and symptoms.
Male, 50 years old.
Both feet swollen, painful, and feverish, suffering greatly in summer. Friend suggested taking Feng Liaoxing Medicinal Wine. After drinking, whole body sweated, but swelling did not subside. Friend separately instructed to grind Sha Medicine (Plague Medicine) fine, mix with human milk, apply to feet. Feet no longer feverish, but unable to walk. After taking more than ten bottles of Feng Liaoxing Medicinal Wine, body very cold, cold sweat soaked bedding, dizzy and uneasy, unable to open eyes, sleeping with eyes closed, condition critical. I saw he could not open eyes, speak, face pale, sweating profuse, no significant heat to touch. I knew the patient was originally an addict and drinker, probably drinking wine to relieve smoking withdrawal. Thus drunk all day, no children to serve him, financial difficulties, unable to afford medicine. Except instructing to take
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 liang, Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 6 qian, decoct two doses as tea, instructed to use wheat dust ash from mill walls, put in linen bag, rub powder on body, sweating decreased. Then burn cattail fan to ash, mix with wheat ash, put in bag to rub, sweating slightly. Also instructed to find old steamer cloth from bun shop, boil and drink, total three times, sweating stopped. But feet swollen, unable to get out of bed, instructed to take half jin of Zhibai Dihuang Wan (Anemarrhenae, Phellodendri et Rehmanniae Pill), barely able to walk, but stooped forward.
This person had smoking addiction and loved wine, pores must be open, hence using wheat ash to astringe sweat. Boiling steamer cloth uses Qi to guide Qi, raising cold Qi.
Female, 51 years old.
June, sweating like rain, needed others to fan, but afraid of wind when window open. Pulse extremely rapid, complexion slightly red, tongue center crimson, lips also crimson. Though profuse sweating, no irritability. Alone afraid of wind when window open, but wants fanning when window closed. I believe window wind enters horizontally directly to skin, while fan wind blows down, indirectly affecting body. This is exterior deficiency syndrome, urgently need to stabilize exterior and nourish blood, administer Gan Qi Liu Yi Tang (Licorice and Astragalus Six-One Decoction):
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 liang, Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 6 qian, decoct soup, divide into three doses, finish in one day. That night sweating stopped mostly, next day took another dose, sweating stopped.
(51) Yellow Sweat
Male, 51 years old.
Addicted to wine, body heavy, disease not resolved though sweating. Cough, asthma, much phlegm, face yellow and dark, tongue yellow, lips dry, black on forehead, pulse deep and choppy. Previous doctors thought Yang deficiency caused excessive sweating, and cough/phlegm/asthma was Kidney deficiency, previously gave Shen Fu Wen Bu (Ginseng and Aconite Warming Tonification), seemed to become heavier daily. I observed his eyes, color like orange yellow, touched his body sweat sticky to hand, undressed to see, sweat yellow, especially on flanks. I recognized it as Yellow Sweat among the Five Jaundices. Prescription:

Mr. Chen, Male, 32 years old.
Every summer and autumn, develops damp-yellow, limbs soft, spirit tired, abdominal distension, sleepy. At onset, usually takes Cangzhu, Yinchen, Baixianpi, Qinjiao, Zhizi, Jineijin, Yujin, etc., plus half jin of Tui Huang Jian Pi Wan (Remove Yellow Strengthen Spleen Pill), recovers by early winter.
But last year onset, face yellow with dirt, black on forehead and cheeks, previous treatment ineffective. A Zhuang ethnic herbal doctor set up a stall, had medicine but no formula. Chen took eight packs of his medicine, instead ate less, less fatigue, even fainted. I considered originally damp-yellow, transformed into Lao Dan (Consumption Jaundice). Asked if afraid of cold? Penis pain? He nodded. Reported hair standing on end at night, nocturnal emission upon sleeping, lustful thoughts seeing women, impotence or immediate ejaculation during intercourse, now penis dull pain and swelling, occasional chills.
I recognize this as Female Labor Jaundice (Nu Lao Dan), caused by unwillingness to work, long sleep stimulating delusions, Heart Yang insufficient, causing Kidney Qi to rise. His chills are not exterior syndrome, but Yang deficiency with Yin gathering, pores empty. Penis swelling is excess, Yin failing to control Yang. Method: Leach dampness and strengthen Spleen, drain Liver and nourish Kidney, and remove dampness and ventilate skin/hair, treat all three simultaneously to observe effect. Use Longdan Xiegan Tang (Gentian Liver-Draining Decoction) combined with Yinchen Tang modified. Take three doses continuously, said hands and feet light, but still afraid of cold at night. Remove Qinjiao, Baixianpi from previous formula, add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) 1 qian, Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) 3 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2 qian, Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Radiati Semen) 3 qian, take another three doses, no longer afraid of cold, but penis pain, occasional white turbid discharge, knowing dampness gradually exiting. Remove Mahuang from original formula, add Fupenzi (Rubiae Fructus) 2 qian, Dongkuizi (Malvae Semen) 2 qian, Haijinsha (Lygodii Spora) 2 qian.
After ten doses, disease势头 greatly suppressed, by October, could push cart and carry loads, sleep separately.
Male, 54 years old.
Complexion dark yellow, eyes pale yellow, body emaciated, hair dry, limbs soft, dizzy, palpitations, lips and tongue dull, pulse deep and choppy. Knows dampness stagnates in San Jiao (Triple Burner), bile flows out, cannot steam Stomach Qi upward, invades Bao Luo (Uterine Collaterals), causing dizziness and limb weakness, Water Qi overwhelms Heart, hence palpitations. Damp-heat hidden internally, blood flow lacks Qi, hence pulse deep and choppy. Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 4 qian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) 5 pieces, Yujin (Curcumae Radix) 2 qian, Baijiangcao (Patriniae Herba) 3 qian, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 2 qian, Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) 2 qian, Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) 2 qian, Dadoujuan (Sojae Semen Preparatum) 3 qian, Chifuling (Poria with Red Wood) 2 qian, Chuantong (Akebiae Caulis) 1.5 qian, Jineijin (Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum) 2 qian, Jiang Zao (Ginger and Jujube) each 2 pieces.
Take five packs, feel somewhat refreshed. Every rainy evening feels cold for ten minutes, none when sunny, omitted this situation at first diagnosis. Thus remove Chifuling and Mutong from original formula, add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Radiati Semen). Take another five doses, no longer afraid of cold, cold sweat under ribs. Modified prescription:
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 2 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 2 qian, Sheng Yiyiren (Coicis Semen) 3 qian, Chao Yiyiren (Coicis Semen Stir-fried) 3 qian, Chuan Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) 2 qian, Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus) 2 qian, Ge Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum) 1.5 qian.
Also take five doses, self-reported illness reduced by half, then changed to Black Bean Powder.
Another April, he visited my home, saw him very plump and healthy. I instructed him to avoid alcohol and meat to prevent swelling. Later heard this person ate canned beef, abdomen became large as a basket, and bad news spread.
Female, 50 years old.
Edema, limbs soft, dizzy, palpitations, body emaciated, spirit tired, complexion sallow, pulse deep and choppy, Guan position only rapid, lips pale red, tongue center yellow and dry. Knows as Lao Dan (Consumption Jaundice).
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 3 qian, Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) 2 qian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) 5 pieces, Baijiangcao (Patriniae Herba) 2 qian, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 2 qian, Sigualuo (Trichosanthes Caulis) 2 qian, Yujin (Curcumae Radix) 2 qian, Dadoujuan (Sojae Semen Preparatum) 2 qian, Chifuling (Poria with Red Wood) 2 qian, Chuantong (Akebiae Caulis) 1.5 qian, Baixianpi (Dictamni Cortex) 2 qian, take two doses.
Two days later, husband came to change prescription, said effective. I instructed husband to check sole of foot, if flat and full, it is edema; if not flat and full, it is damp-heat struggling, dampness flooding internally. Result, checked not flat. Prescribed Yinchen Hao Tang (Artemisia, Gardenia and Rheum Decoction), continued to get effect, integrated nourishing Yin and clearing heat with previous formula. Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 4 qian, Yujin (Curcumae Radix) 2 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2 qian, Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Radiati Semen) 3 qian, Jineijin (Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum) 2 qian, Wubeizi (Gallae Chinensis) 2 qian, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 3 qian, Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) 2 qian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) 5 pieces, Yiyiren (Coicis Semen) 3 qian.
Take three or four doses, various ailments continued to reduce. Husband asked where dampness comes from? I explained wife's dampness is not wind, frost, rain, dew tangible dampness, but daily diet entering Stomach, Gallbladder has cold, Stomach Qi rushes up, steams and nourishes Five Viscera, bile flows into San Jiao (Triple Burner), causing accumulation transforming into dampness, accumulated dampness transforms into heat, thus generating Dan Huang (Heat Jaundice). Once damp-heat removed, San Jiao naturally unblocked, why edema? Overall suitable to promote dampness and clear heat, unblock urination. Still adhere to previous method, integrate strengthening Spleen and nourishing Blood.
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 4 qian, Ge Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum) 1 qian, Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) 2 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2 qian, Jinchai Shihu (Dendrobii Nigricantis Caulis) 2 qian, Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Radiati Semen) 3 qian, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) 2 qian, Yiyiren (Coicis Semen) 3 qian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) 5 pieces, Dadoujuan (Sojae Semen Preparatum) 2 qian, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 2 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fupenzi (Rubiae Fructus), Juluo (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen), Sigualuo (Trichosanthes Caulis) each 2 qian.
Take four doses, disease势头 retreated. Only worry about overeating.
Female, 30 years old.
Complexion yellow and dark, tongue brown with thick greasy coating, pulse deep and choppy, urine yellow and short, afraid of cold every afternoon. Judged as Damp-Yellow Syndrome.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) 1.5 qian, Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 2 qian, Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 3 qian, Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) 2 qian, Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Radiati Semen) 3 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2 qian, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 2 qian, Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) 2 qian, Jiang Zao (Ginger and Jujube) each 2 pieces.
Take two doses. I used Mahuang and Guizhi because fear of cold at dusk indicates Lung Cold, should ventilate Lung Qi. His relative Mao, a pediatrician, said my prescription using Mahuang and Guizhi is inappropriate for the season, saying Spring no Mahuang, Summer no Guizhi, this is great principle, if eating this prescription, surely profuse sweating non-stop. He did not believe, still decocted and took. Felt illness gone mostly, but slight edema in afternoon. Re-administered
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) 3 qian, Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) 2 qian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) 5 pieces, Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) 2 qian, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 2 qian, Dadoujuan (Sojae Semen Preparatum) 2 qian, Jineijin (Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum) 2 qian, Wubeizi (Stir-fried Gallae Chinensis) 2 qian, Chuan Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) 2 qian, Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus) 2 qian, Jiang Zao (Ginger and Jujube) each 2 pieces. Two doses cured.
