Hu, female, age unspecified.
During the peak of summer heat, fever persisted for seven days without abating. The patient's husband sent someone to Nanchang to invite my elder brother to consult. The messenger said, "My master explicitly stated that we will pay the consultation fee according to Mr.'s usual rates in the provincial city." Mr. Hu had a habit of "hoarding silver coins" (referring to stinginess or a specific preference for money) and was deaf; he actually said, "I earn thirty yuan a day; delaying for two days would be hard to calculate." After others explained that the patient was his own sister, he finally set out for the countryside. After examination, he prescribed Qing Shu Yi Qi Tang (Clear Summerheat and Augment Qi Decoction). After the patient took it, sweating increased. Mr. Hu said, "Sweating means recovery; she will surely want food tomorrow." The next morning, the patient was fatigued, drowsy, and groaning incessantly. Watermelon rind (Xi Gua Cui Yi), Lablab flower (Bian Dou Hua), and Eupatorium leaf (Pei Lan Ye) were added to the previous formula, but there was no improvement. As Mr. Hu prepared to leave and return to the city, he prescribed Xiang Ru Qi Wu Tang (Seven-Ingredient Mosla Decoction), instructing four doses, expecting recovery through a shivering sweat (Zhan Han). That day, I went to the neighboring village for a consultation, but the patient's husband, Huang, invited me instead. His pulse was floating, large, and powerless; he was mentally confused, with furrowed brows and a collapsed body. He groaned constantly, with sweat on his head and flanks, while his lower legs and knees felt cold. His lips and tongue were crimson; he wanted to drink but could not swallow. I diagnosed dampness stagnation with loose interstices (Cou Li), where sweat was blocked by dampness and could not vent. Therefore, I administered Ren Shen Bai Hu Tang (Ginseng White Tiger Decoction) with added Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu). Huang doubted this, asking why such a pungent-cool formula was used. Seeing his timidity, I declined further engagement. Persuaded by others, they reluctantly took one dose, and that night, symptoms alleviated. Another day, Huang personally sought me to adjust the prescription and apologized, so I increased the dosage of the previous formula.
Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu) 3 qian, Raw Gypsum (Sheng Shi Gao) 4 qian, Stir-fried Anemarrhena Rhizome (Chao Zhi Mu) 2 qian, Rice-fried American Ginseng (Mi Chao Yang Shen) 2 qian, Soybean Sprouts (Da Dou Juan) 3 qian, Atractodis Rhizoma (Bai Zhu) 2 qian.
After one dose, fever subsided, clarity returned, and groaning ceased. However, the patient requested to stop medication, so no adjustment was made, and she recovered through self-care. Soon after, she experienced three episodes of skin chills. Although the illness improved, she developed swollen feet. I instructed her to take Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) for eight doses, which cured her.
Male, 20 years old. In early autumn, he slept outdoors overnight. After waking from cold, he had fever for three to four days. The doctor said it was a common cold and medication failed, with symptoms worsening daily. He slept facing inward, mentally confused, with six pulses floating and powerless, face red and shiny, eyes slightly red, center of tongue red with slight yellow coating, slight surface heat, no desire to drink or eat. I believed wind invaded late at night, closing the interstices, and wind pathogen attacked the Liver, causing fever. Thus, I employed an aromatic meridian-penetrating method.
Eupatorium Leaf (Pei Lan Ye) 2 qian, Black Cardamom Fruit (Bi Cheng Qie) 2 qian, Luffa Fruit Fiber (Si Gua Luo) 2 qian, Tangerine Peel Network (Ju Luo) 2 qain, Curcuma Tuber (Yu Jin) 0.5 qian, Reed Rhizome (Lu Gen) 3 qian, Fermented Soybean (Dou Chi) 50 grains, Calcined Gypsum (Duan Shi Gao) 3 qian, Lablab Seed Coat (Bian Dou Yi) 2 qian, Fresh Rehmannia Root (Xian Sheng Di) 2 qian, Yi Yuan San 2 qian. Decoct and take.
Second consultation: Pulse floating slightly flattened, face red but not shiny, eyes have red veins, tongue slippery with pale red color. Can sit up, desires cold drinks, body itches. This disease has neither exterior nor interior signs; the heat does not burn to the touch, face and tongue are red but not thirsty, pulse is floating but without aversion to cold or headache. This indicates wind pathogen has not transformed into heat, and Yin inside is unharmed. Remove Black Cardamom Fruit, Yi Yuan San, and Reed Rhizome from the previous formula; add Green Calyx Plum (Lv E Mei) 2 qian, Daidai Flower (Dai Dai Hua) 2 qian, and Polygonatum Rhizome (Yu Zhu) 2 qian. One dose clears the heat.
Male, age unspecified.
Aversion to cold, fever, no sweating, loss of appetite. Doctor diagnosed Shang Han (Cold Damage) and treated with modified Ren Shen Bai Hu Tang (Ginseng White Tiger Decoction). After two doses, condition unchanged. My diagnosis: pulse floating at Cun and Guan, sunken and deep at Guan section, face dark yet shiny, lips and tongue red but dull. Diagnosed as latent heat unresolved. Prescribed:
Fresh Dendrobium Stem (Xian Shi Hu) 3 qian, Fresh Rehmannia Root (Xian Sheng Di) 2 qian, Coix Seed (Yi Yi Ren) 3 qian, White Cardamom Seed (Bai Kou Ren) 2 qian, Green Calyx Plum (Lv E Mei) 2 qian, Daidai Flower (Dai Dai Hua) 2 qian, Eupatorium Leaf (Pei Lan Ye) 2 qian, Artemisia Capillaris Herba (Yin Chen) 3 qian, Gentian Root (Qin Jiao) 2 qian, Tangerine Peel Network (Ju Luo) 2 qian, Fermented Soybean (Xiang Chi) 30 grains.
After two doses, sweating occurred, fever subsided, aversion to wind ceased, body felt comfortable, and smell of rice became appealing. Coinciding with my family's mealtime, I asked if he wanted to eat. He smiled and agreed. During eating, profuse sweating occurred. Unbuttoning his clothes revealed red spots on his chest, similar distribution over the whole body, denser on legs and lower abdomen. Asked if itchy? He shook his head saying no. I reasoned that dampness overflowing internally transformed into heat and toxin, which had now emerged externally. We should capitalize on this to push it out. Remove Fresh Rehmannia Root and Fresh Dendrobium Stem from the previous formula; add Honeysuckle Flower (Jin Yin Hua) 4 qian, Forsythia Fruit (Lian Qiao) 2 qian, Red Peony Root (Chi Shao) 2 qian, and Yi Yuan San 3 qian. Two doses brought stability.
Male, 34 years old.
For half a month, fever persisted without abatement, continuous sweating, rapid pulse beating against fingers, red face, crimson tongue, no aversion to wind or cold, no headache, restlessness day and night. This is prolonged heat injuring Ying (Nutritive) level.
Raw Gypsum (Sheng Shi Gao) 3 qian, Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhi Mu) 2 qian, Licorice Root (Gan Cao) 1 qian, Japonica Rice (Geng Mi) 2 he. Take one dose. The family thought it too cooling and dared not take it. Later persuaded by his brother, they tried it tentatively. That night, the patient was quiet, unlike the restless state before medication.
Second consultation: Rapid pulse normalized, tongue moist and red but not crimson, sweating decreased, brows relaxed, eyes lively, body slightly warm with slight sweat. Heat trend has receded. Changed treatment to Qing Ying Tang (Clear Nutritive Level Decoction).
Rhinoceros Horn (Xi Jiao) 1 qian, Raw Gypsum (Sheng Shi Gao) 3 qian, Adenophora Root (Nan Sha Shen) 2 qian, Curcuma Tuber (Yu Jin) 2 qian, Tangerine Peel Network (Ju Luo) 2 qian, Fresh Rehmannia Root (Xian Sheng Di) 2 qian, Eupatorium Leaf (Pei Lan Ye) 2 qian, Reed Rhizome (Lu Gen) 2 qian, Fresh Lotus Stem (Xian He Geng) 2 chi, Lablab Seed Coat (Bian Dou Yi) 2 qian, White Cardamom Seed (Bai Kou Ren) 2 qian.
Took two packs, sweating stopped, fever subsided, able to consume thin porridge. Came for follow-up, instructed to take Huang Jin Dan (Golden Pill), three times daily, nine pills each time, effective.
Male, 61 years old.
Low-grade persistent fever, treated for over twenty days, condition worsened daily, returned home to prepare end-of-life affairs. As I approached his room, I heard wailing, knowing the condition was critical, so I rested at a village schoolmaster's place. Wailing soon stopped, someone summoned me to consult. The room was hot, doors and windows closed, no sunlight, bed had leather mattress and coat backrest, assuming patient feared wind/cold. Upon lighting lamp, saw full red face, black crust covering tongue, unable to move tongue base when speaking. Claimed taking twelve doses of Shen Fu (Ginseng and Aconite), leading to these changes. Pulse was surging, large, beating strongly against fingers, difficult to coordinate with breathing. Known as intense internal heat, stomach fluids exhausted. Further observing black crust on tongue, saw red flame color underneath, tongue center crimson. Patient cried in pain. Instructed to hold Chinese Plum (Wu Mei) in mouth until saliva produced, then wash tongue with water. Holding Chinese Plum for about twenty minutes, mouth filled with saliva, black crust showed signs of detaching. Then washed tongue with Mint Water (Bo He Shui), patient expressed comfort. Urgently used Wu Zhi Yin (Five Juices Drink):
Pear Juice, Fresh Rehmannia Root Juice, Lotus Root Juice, Radish Juice, Reed Rhizome Juice mixed well and taken cold. Three minutes later, stomach gurgled, patient suddenly turned outward. Thereafter, every four hours, one cup of Five Juices Drink, total three cups, spent the night comfortably. Next morning, tongue not curled, no aversion to cold, desired congee, wanted windows open. I prescribed: Reed Rhizome (Lu Gen) 3 qian, Fresh Rehmannia Root (Xian Sheng Di) 2 qian, Lablab Seed Coat (Bian Dou Yi) 2 qian, Raw Gypsum (Sheng Shi Gao) 3 qian, Watermelon Rind (Xi Gua Cui Yi) 2 qian, Polygonatum Rhizome (Yu Zhu) 2 qian, Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhi Mu) 2 qian. Two doses cured.
Male, 50 years old.
Certain day: Four limbs cold reversal (Jue Ni). Lives in upstairs bedroom. Morning and afternoon, sun shines on bed, two charcoal stoves outside downstairs. Downstairs cooler, people sweating profusely, but he sleeps upstairs, mosquito net down, wearing padded jacket. Touching body, sweaty, not very cold, but from fingertips to elbows ice cold. Asked if feels hot or cold, knows nothing. Pulse floating and surging, Guan section particularly strong. Known as latent heat, not cold reversal. Sweating with cold reversal indicates Wei Qi blocked internally and externally, forming Jue syndrome. No diarrhea, thus no adverse signs, truly not suitable for Aconite (Fu) and Cinnamon Bark (Gui). Instructed first to decoct Floating Wheat (Fu Xiao Mai) one sheng to collect sweat, then take:
Raw Gypsum (Sheng Shi Gao) 3 qian, Reed Rhizome (Lu Gen) 3 qian, Bamboo Leaf (Zhu Ye) 0.5 qian, Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian) 2 qian, Mosla Herb (Xiang Ru) 0.5 qian, Mung Bean Skin (Lu Dou Yi) a pinch. Decoct and take. Also use Zi Xue Dan (Purple Snow Pill) one pill, mixed with medicine.
Felt comfortable after taking, instructed son to get second dose. Second consultation: Patient smiling, claimed illness gone more than half, now knows heat, moved downstairs. Pulse not surging, rapid quality, not beating strongly against fingers. Judged latent heat gradually emerging externally.
Fresh Rehmannia Root (Xian Sheng Di) 3 qian, Reed Rhizome (Lu Gen) 3 qian, Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian) 2 qian, Honeysuckle Flower (Jin Yin Hua) 3 qian, Mosla Herb (Xiang Ru) 0.5 qian, Raw Gypsum (Sheng Shi Gao) 3 qian, Yi Yuan San 3 qian, Fresh Lotus Stem (Xian He Geng) 2 chi. Also use Zhi Bao Dan (Treasure of Life Pill) one pill, swallowed with medicine. Two doses stable.
Two days later, patient desired meat. I thought inadvisable, prescribed Shen Mai Tang (Ginseng and Ophiopogon Decoction) for recovery, and predicted boils/toxins would occur post-illness. Why? Patient previously loved rich foods, likely heat accumulation internally. Hence Coptis Rhizome used for detoxification, Zi Xue Dan and Zhi Bao Dan cleared latent heat. Deep heat leads to deep cold reversal; clearing heat and resolving toxin is key. By autumn, indeed widespread red swollen boils appeared.
Female, 30 years old.
March-April (Summer): Low-grade persistent fever, thirst, sweating, irritability at night, loss of appetite. Pulse floating, rapid, powerless, with tight quality, seemingly chaotic. I treated as Wen Wen (Warm-Dampness) using Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Decoction), one dose. That night at 10 PM, patient called for tea, not boiling water. Husband touched body, no steaming heat, limbs still warm. Next day added American Ginseng (Yang Shen) 0.5 qian to formula, one dose, sweat stopped, slight fever. Second consultation: Patient depressed, head down, forehead pale white, deep breaths, pulse no longer rapid, six positions beat with涩 (choppy) quality. Judged dampness not fully vented. Added Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu) to previous formula, two doses.
Next day father came saying great effect, asked what disease this was. I answered Wen Wen (Warm-Dampness). Previous doctors only used Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu) and Artemisia Annua Herba (Qing Hao) to reduce fever, unaware that releasing exterior increases heat. Sweating without fever reduction indicates heat latent in muscle layer. Hence pungent-cool agents stopped sweat and resolved heat. Advised careful care post-illness, soft food, avoid grease, wait for Yin fluids abundant and Yang Qi defending exterior. Beware of Dan Nue (Malaria) in autumn. Result followed my words.
Female, 33 years old.
Dizziness, dark vision, drowsiness, poor appetite, weak limbs for 3-4 years. Complexion sallow, emaciated spirit fatigue, six pulses sunken and choppy, tongue thin coating, dry lips, heavy voice, difficulty stretching when sitting/standing. Estimated dampness overflowing internally, damp-heat struggling, San Jiao (Triple Burner) not smooth, blocking Stomach and Intestines, hence sallow face, weak limbs, dark vision, tinnitus, laziness, drowsiness. Formula:
Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu) 2 qian, Gentian Root (Qin Jiao) 2 qian, Gardenia Fruit (Zhi Zi) 4, Artemisia Capillaris Herba (Yin Chen) 3 qian, Curcuma Tuber (Yu Jin) 2 qian, Barley Sprout (Mai Ya) 2 qian, Soybean Sprouts (Da Dou Juan) 2 qian, Patrinia Herb (Bai Jiang Cao) 2 qian, Chicken Gizzard Lining (Ji Nei Jin) 2 qian, Ginger and Jujube 2 each. Decoct together.
Two doses: Dizziness and limb weakness significantly improved, able to eat, but still drowsy, pulse still sunken/choppy, Guan section beats strongly. Damp-heat stirring suspected. Add to formula:
Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui) 2 qian, Adzuki Bean (Chi Xiao Dou) 3 qian, Cyathula Root (Chuan Niu Xi) 2 qian, Papaya Fruit (Mu Gua) 2 qian, Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuan Xiong) 0.5 qian.
Four doses, stop medication. Use Egg Yolk (Qu Bai) beaten, taken with warm non-ash wine. Finally, use a ball of women's hair, 4 liang of pork lard, boil away residue, add women's hair, melt completely, cool into ceramic bowl. Take one spoon daily with hot wine, finish course. Woman followed method, achieved full recovery.
Later husband asked how this woman got dampness without exposure to wind/rain/dew? I explained invisible dampness, due to weak Stomach Qi unable to reach Heart Yang, irrigate five Zang organs, causing San Jiao obstruction, hence sallow face and weak limbs. Finished speaking, asked him to read Wen Bing Tiao Bian (Systematic Differentiation of Warm Diseases) to understand himself.
Male, 14 years old.
Listless, drowsy, poor appetite, subcutaneous low-grade fever. Cun pulse Choppy, Chi pulse Choppy, Guan pulse Rapid. Tongue red, center slightly yellow, lips pale red, frequent sighing. Judged Wen Wen (Warm-Dampness). Prescribed:
Artemisia Capillaris Herba (Yin Chen) 2 qian, Gentian Root (Qin Jiao) 0.5 qian, Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu) 0.5 qian, Soybean Sprouts (Da Dou Juan) 2 qian, Curcuma Tuber (Yu Jin) 0.5 qian, Phellodendron Bark (Xuan Pi) 0.5 qian, Red Poria (Chi Ling) 2 qian, Zheng Xi Zhuang 0.5 qian, Alisma Rhizome (Ze Xie) 0.5 qian, Fermented Soybean (Dou Chi) 30 grains.
Two doses: Effect uncertain. Seeking quick cure, went to Nanchang to see another doctor. That doctor used Yin-nourishing heat-reducing method. Two doses reduced fever, but caused aversion to cold, dizziness, limb weakness, drowsiness. Doctor added Gypsum, Anemarrhena Rhizome, Ophiopogon Root (Yuan Shen) 2 qian each, instructed 2-4 doses. On way home, patient craved noodles, ate one bowl. Before arriving home, defecated yellow watery stool several times, cried in pain, fever returned, mental confusion.
Consulted me again. Cun and Chi pulses Choppy as before, Guan and Chi floating and rapid. Tongue red mixed, dark yellow appearance, eyes red veins. Recognized dampness stagnating in Middle Jiao, causing heat binding with side-flow. Must seep dampness and penetrate meridians, heat will retreat naturally.
Artemisia Capillaris Herba (Yin Chen) 3 qian, Gentian Root (Qin Jiao) 2 qian, Patrinia Herb (Bai Jiang Cao) 2 qian, Curcuma Tuber (Yu Jin) 2 qian, Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu) 2 qian, Red Poria (Chi Fu Ling) 2 qian, Gardenia Fruit (Zhi Zi) 5, Soybean Sprouts (Da Dou Juan) 2 qian, Chicken Gizzard Lining (Ji Nei Jin) 2 qian, Fermented Soybean (Xiang Chi) 30 grains.
One dose: Child had bowel movement at night, whole body sweated, peaceful that night. Two doses: Profuse sweating, body itchy, urine sauce-colored with sour odor. Four more doses: Meridians penetrated, sweat out, dampness removed, meridians clear, illness halved. But feels limb weakness and dizziness.
Child constitutionally weak, should not sleep outdoors seeking coolness. Can take Ren Shen Yang Rong Wan (Ginseng Nourishing Harmony Pill) 4 liang, finish in seven days. Do not overdose, causes cough. Another formula for recovery:
Dendrobium Nobile Stem (Jin Chai Shi Hu), Coix Seed (Yi Yi Ren), Polygonatum Rhizome (Yu Zhu), Adenophora Root (Nan Sha Shen), Fresh Rehmannia Root (Xian Sheng Di), Eupatorium Leaf (Pei Lan Ye), Black Cardamom Fruit (Bi Cheng Qie), Tangerine Peel Network (Ju Luo) each 2 qian, Lablab (Bian Dou) 0.5 qian, Moutan Cortex (Fen Dan Pi) 0.5 qian, Sugarcane Juice 1 cup mixed. Four doses fully cured.

Usually hematemesis (vomiting blood). Again encountered heavy rain, clothes soaked, causing whole body discomfort, inability to work, panting on exertion. Tongue center yellow and dry, lips purple-dark, floating and rapid pulses alternating. This is dampness complicating into blood stasis, causing meridian discomfort, internal/external closure, whole body distension.
Luffa Fruit Fiber (Si Gua Luo), Tangerine Peel Network (Ju Luo), Curcuma Tuber (Yu Jin), Patrinia Herb (Bai Jiang Cao), Tribulus Fruit (Guan Ji Li), Eupatorium Leaf (Pei Lan), Reed Rhizome (Lu Gen), Clematis Root (Ling Xian) each 2 qian, Artemisia Capillaris Herba (Yin Chen) 3 qian, Reed Rhizome (Lu Gen) one bundle. Decoct together.
Four doses: Body no longer closed, urine sauce-colored, sweat from flanks like bloody water, other parts none. Pulse rapid and forceful. Damp-stasis transforming into heat, not yet vented.
Patrinia Herb (Bai Jiang Cao) 2 qian, Artemisia Capillaris Herba (Yin Chen) 4 qian, Reed Rhizome (Lu Gen) 3 qian, Curcuma Tuber (Yu Jin) 2 qian, Imperata Rhizome (Mao Gen) 3 qian, Phellodendron Bark (Chuan Bai) 2 qian, Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian) 2 qian, Gardenia Fruit (Zhi Zi) 5, Cyathula Root (Niu Xi) 2 qian, Moutan Cortex (Dan Pi) 2 qian, Peach Kernel (Tao Ren) 2 qian, Angelica Sinensis Tail (Dang Gui Wei) 2 qian.
Four doses: Defecated half bucket of rice-water colored bloody water, body felt light, limbs movable, urine turned yellow with fever, containing sticky matter, sometimes bloated. Judged Qi deficiency, heat sinking downward, with heat strangury transformation. Changed formula:
Smilax Glabra Rhizome (Chuan Bi Xie) 2 qian, [Text Error: "Bing Bu Xiang Tong" likely refers to a specific herb or typo, kept as is], Dianthera Herba (Qu Mai) 2 qian, Taro Stem (Tong Cao) 2 qian, Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin) 2 qian, Phellodendron Bark (Chuan Bai) 2 qian, Silkworm Frass (Can Sha) 2 qian, Malva Seed (Dong Kui Zi) 2 qian, Pyrola Root (Shi Wei) 2 qian, Gentiana Scabra Root (Long Dan Cao) 2 qian, Centipeda Herb (Deng Xin) one circle. Decoct. Advised replacing tea with lotus root daily, recovered.

Fever three days, both feet unable to step off bed, shouting incessantly. Schoolmaster Cheng, having read some medical books, believed this was Yue Zu Shang Han (Amputated Foot Cold Damage), caused by failure to release exterior in Shang Han, but knew cause without prescribing. When I consulted, patient reported starting pulling weeds in garden 7-8 days ago. Four days ago, noon ground heat rose, making feet uncomfortable, immersed feet in mountain spring water for minutes, felt one chill, dizzy returning home. That night fever spiked, self-medicated with Cyathula Root (Niu Xi), Papaya Fruit (Mu Gua), Actaea Rhizome (Yu Huo), Dogwood Bark (Jia Pi), Mahonia Leaf (Di Gu Pi), etc., no significant change.
My diagnosis: Cun pulses floating and soft, Guan not beating strongly, Chi pulses floating and rapid. Disease uncertain. Based on condition, hesitated, fearing Gan Jiao Qi (Dry Beriberi) or Yue Zu Shang Han. Observed tongue: crimson with purple, calves hot to touch, face red. Judged damp-toxin poisoning, affecting Qi and Blood.
First used 20 broken gray bricks (outdoor preferred), collected 20 broken straw shoes. Bricks heated red in fire, placed broken shoes on bricks. Supported patient sitting, stepped on shoes, poured urine onto bricks to generate steam, fumigating feet. To prevent heat dissipation, fixed feet with cloth until bricks cooled. Wiped urine, lay in bed covered. Internal medicine: Acorus Rhizome (Shi Chang Pu), Pteris Vinulatae Herba (Feng Wei Cao), Mosla Herb (Xiang Ru), Angelica Sinensis Tail (Gui Wei), Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di), Tribulus Fruit (Guan Ji Li), Poria (Yun Ling), Moutan Cortex (Dan Pi) each 2 qian, Clematis Root (Wei Ling Xian) 3 qian, Honeysuckle Flower (Jin Yin Hua) 4 qian, Coix Seed (Yi Yi Ren) 4 qian, Honeycomb (Lu Feng Fang) one. Decoct together.
Five doses continuously. Then Ten Great Merit Fruit (Shi Da Gong Lao) 5 qian and lean pork 4 liang roasted/taken several times. Finally buy Hu Qian Wan (Tiger Crouching Pill), take for 20 days. Method achieved miraculous effect.
Reason for outdoor gray bricks: conducts dampness heat. Reason for broken straw shoes: treats beriberi with beriberi, guides heat out. Pouring urine: uses heat to rush feet, rising and descending. Believed feet only affected by damp-heat toxins in meridians, not harming Qi/Blood, thus using aromatic meridian-penetrating method from Wen Bing Tiao Bian.
Wang, male, age unspecified.
Whole body closed/stiff, no pain/itch, bedridden three years, unable to turn, long treatment, hundred medicines ineffective.
Monk Han, 60 years old, loves labor, strong physique, chops wood, carries 300 jin each time. Usually taciturn, called "Monk Han". Monk often told people "I can treat 3-4 diseases". Words not trusted. Monk often visited Wang's house, claiming ability to cure. Wang initially disbelieved, nearly desperate, tried tentatively, invited monk to treat. Monk only asked condition, then prescribed:
Mahonia Leaf (Di Gu Pi) 5 jin, Aged Mugwort Leaf (Chen Ai Ye) 5 jin, must not wash with water. Decoct in two pots (2.5 jin each). Place water in large foot basin, put two wooden boards flat on basin mouth, let patient lie naked on them, fumigate with steam. When water cools, switch to other pot. Rotate two pots for two days.
Used four doses (eight days), illness suddenly vanished.
Later met monk, asked reason. Monk said: "Wang's disease is damp-phlegm blocking meridians, internal medicine hard to see effect, must use steam." Also said: "The Di Gu Pi I use is actually not Di Gu Pi, but Orange Peel. But orange peel must be trampled by people into mud to be usable." (Monk usually collects such orange peels).
Wang's condition and monk's skill witnessed by me personally, recorded specifically for research.
