Cough due to external contraction, with expectoration of clear, white, and slimy phlegm, indicates water retention in Cold Damage (Shanghan). The original formula Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) is suitable.
Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, 2 qian), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome, 3 qian), Mahuang (Ephedra Herba, 7 fen), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 1 qian), Xixin (Asarum Root, 5 fen), Baishao (White Peony Root, 2 qian), Wuwei Zi (Schisandra Fruit, 1 qian).
Song says: Cold damage cough with clear sputum, cooked in one dose with Schisandra, Dried Ginger, and Asarum.
Pinellia, White Peony, Ephedra together with Cinnamon Twig and Licorice; the method left by Changsha [Zhang Zhongjing] is precious for refined study.

\Wheeze
[General Principle] Wheezing syndromes mostly originate from phlegm, but sometimes deficiency belongs to the Kidney gate. Opening the mouth to speak of weak Middle Qi, how does one know that transforming Qi requires removing water?
Tight breathing and wheezing with nasal congestion and impaired voice indicate closure of Lung orifices by Wind-Cold. Su Zi Jiang Qi Tang (Perilla Fruit Descending Qi Decoction) is suitable.
Su Zi (Perilla Fruit, 2 qian), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome, 1 qian), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 2 qian), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel, 2 qian), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 2 qian), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, 1 qian), Chenxiang (Agarwood, 1 qian), Qianhu (Peucedanum Root, 3 qian), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, 2 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian).
