[General Principle] The sinews and vessels have always valued being moist and supple; how can they endure the mutual hostility between Wind and Fire? Due to this mutual conflict, they cause mutual traction (spasms); one must inquire into the origin of Jue (reversal) from the Liver and Spleen.
Occurrence of opisthotonos (rigid arching of the back), as well as falling backward, constitutes Sun Yang Channel Spasm Disease (a disease of spasms in the Taiyang channel). Fangfeng Zhuru Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction with Bamboo Shavings) is appropriate.
Fangfeng (3 qian) [Radix Saposhnikoviae], Shengdi (3 qian) [Rhizoma Rehmanniae Recens], Baishao (1 qian) [Radix Paeoniae Alba], Gegen (3 qian) [Radix Puerariae], Jingjie (2 qian) [Herba Schizonepetae], Huafen (3 qian) [Radix Bupleuri], Zhuru (3 qian) [Caulis Bambusae in Taenia], Jiangcan (3 qian) [Bombyx Batryticatus].
The song states: In Sun Yang Channel Spasm Disease, opisthotonos occurs; Gegen (Pueraria Root) and Gualougen (Trichosanthes Root) are most excellent.
Zhuru (Bamboo Shavings) and Jiangcan (Silkworm) are selected together, plus Dihuang (Rehmannia), Baishao (White Peony), and Jingjie (Schizonepeta) with Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia).
Occurrence of head drooping and feet curling, as well as falling forward, constitutes Yang Ming Channel Spasm Disease (a disease of spasms in the Yangming channel). Qingyang Yijing Tang (Clearing Yang and Stopping Spasms Decoction) is appropriate.
Shengdi (3 qian) [Rhizoma Rehmanniae Recens], Maidong (3 qian) [Tuber Ophiopogonis], Yuzhu (3 qian) [Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati], Shigao (3 qian) [Gypsum Fibrosum], Mangxiao (2 qian) [Natrii Sulfas], Jiu Jun (2 qian) [Radix et Rhizoma Rhei processed with wine], Gancao (1 qian) [Radix Glycyrrhizae].
The song states: Yang Ming Channel Spasm Disease presents with forward bending like a bow; use Dihuang (Rehmannia), Gancao (Licorice), Mangxiao (Mirabilite), and Maidong (Ophiopogon).
Add Shigao (Gypsum), Jun (Rhubarb), and Yuzhu (Polygonatum); Qingyang Yangye Tang (Clearing Yang and Nourishing Yin Decoction) achieves its merit.
Occurrence of traction and clonic spasms in one side's hands and feet, rendering them unusable, constitutes Shao Yang Channel Spasm Disease (a disease of spasms in the Shaoyang channel). Jiawei Chaihu Tang (Modified Bupleurum Decoction) is appropriate.
Chaihu (3 qian) [Radix Bupleuri], Ku Qin (2 qian) [Radix Scutellariae dried/stale], Shengjiang (2 qian) [Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens], Gancao (1 qian) [Radix Glycyrrhizae], Dangshen (2 qian) [Radix Codonopsis], Shengdi (3 qian) [Rhizoma Rehmanniae Recens], Lingyangjiao (2 qian) [Cornu Saigae Tataricae], Huafen (3 qian) [Radix Bupleuri], Baishao (3 qian) [Radix Paeoniae Alba], Danggui (2 qian) [Radix Angelicae Sinensis].
The song states: The Shao Yang meridian winds around the sides; in spasm disease, the sinews contract causing natural traction.
Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Gancao (Licorice), Renshen (Ginseng - here Dangshen), Danggui (Angelica), Chaihu (Bupleurum), Baishao (White Peony), and Dihuang (Rehmannia), along with Lingyangjiao (Saiga Horn) and Huafen (Bupleurum Root), decocted with Qin (Scutellaria).
Occurrence of muscle twitching and trembling, with a sensation of wanting to fall to the ground, indicates that Cold Water has dried out the sinews and muscles. Yiren Zhenwu Tang (Coix Seed Zhenwu Decoction) is appropriate.
Baizhu (3 qian) [Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae], Fuling (3 qian) [Poria], Gancao (1 qian) [Radix Glycyrrhizae], Fuzi (3 qian) [Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata], Shengjiang (3 qian) [Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens], Yiren (3 qian) [Semen Coicis], Guizhi (2 qian) [Ramulus Cinnamomi], Baishao (2 qian) [Radix Paeoniae Alba].
The song states: When sinews and muscles are cold and dry causing trembling, Baizhu (Atractylodes), Fuling (Poria), Shengjiang (Ginger), and Fuzi (Aconite) should be prioritized.
Yiren (Coix Seed), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Baishao (White Peony) together with Gancao (Licorice); the Zhenwu Tang formula is a wonderful method passed down.
Occurrence of stiffness and urgency in the four limbs, as well as unbearable pain, indicates that severe Cold causes sinew contraction and traction. Guizhi Fuzi Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Aconite Decoction) is appropriate.
Guizhi (2 qian) [Ramulus Cinnamomi], Baishao (2 qian) [Radix Paeoniae Alba], Gancao (1 qian) [Radix Glycyrrhizae], Shengjiang (3 slices) [Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens], Dazao (2 pieces) [Fructus Jujubae], Fuzi (1.5 qian) [Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata].
The song states: Limb stiffness and urgency stem from Cold contraction; Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Fuzi (Aconite) warm the meridians, and the illness heals.
Assisted by Shengjiang (Ginger) and Dazao (Jujube), plus Baishao (White Peony) and Gancao (Licorice), the strength becomes superior.
Occurrence of soreness and pain in the four limbs, as well as flaccidity and inability to use them due to burning/drying, indicates that excessive Fire scorches and dries the sinews. Daji Buyin Wan (Large-Dose Yin-Nourishing Pill) is appropriate.
Huangbai (3 qian) [Cortex Phellodendri], Zhimu (3 qian) [Rhizoma Anemarrhenae], Shudi (3 qian) [Radix Rehmanniae Preparata], Lingyangjiao (2 qian) [Cornu Saigae Tataricae], Guiban (3 qian) [Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis], Niuxi (2 qian) [Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae], Baishao (3 qian) [Radix Paeoniae Alba], Fangji (1 qian) [Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae], Danggui (3 qian) [Radix Angelicae Sinensis], Yuzhu (3 qian) [Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati].
The song states: Four-limb soreness/pain or flaccidity/burning; adjust with Zhimu (Anemarrhena), Huangbai (Phellodendron), Guiban (Turtle Shell), Lingyangjiao (Saiga Horn), Dihuang (Rehmannia), and Baishao (White Peony).
Yuzhu (Polygonatum), Danggui (Angelica), Fangji (Stephania), and Niuxi (Achyranthes); after taking the full dose, the illness will disappear.
Occurrence of weakness in the four limbs, fatigue in walking, and inability to control movement, indicates that excessive Dampness causes sinew laxity. Lishi Zhaojin Tang (Damp-Draining and Sinew-Drying Decoction) is appropriate.
Yiren (3 qian) [Semen Coicis], Mugua (1 qian) [Fructus Chaenomelis], Fangji (1 qian) [Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae], Guizhi (2 qian) [Ramulus Cinnamomi], Gancao (1 qian) [Radix Glycyrrhizae].
The song states: Four-limb weakness is caused by Dampness injuring the sinews; the group of damp-draining herbs includes Fangji (Stephania), Mugua (Chaenomeles), Yiren (Coix Seed), and Gancao (Licorice).
Moving water seeks to transform Qi; in the hierarchy of drugs (Jun-Chen-Zuo-Shi), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) serves as the Sovereign (Jun) herb.
(Note by Bo An: Ren Shen Za Zao Wan (Ginseng Rejuvenation Pill) may be taken intermittently.)
