Clause: The pupil exhibits dryness and irregularity, lacking a round shape on the left, right, upper, or lower sides. If the pupil color is white, it indicates pathology caused by the downward flow of brain fluid (Nao Zhi); if the pupil color is black, it signifies an imbalance characterized by excess heat in the Gallbladder and deficiency in the Liver.
For white-colored pupils, employ Xie Gan Tang (Coptis Decoction to Drain the Liver), comprising Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Chong Wei Zi (Leonuri Fructus), and Hei Shen (Polygoni Multiflori Radix Praeparata). For black-colored pupils, employ Zhen Gan Wan (Pill to Calm the Liver), comprising Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Shi Jue Ming (Haliotidis Concha), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), and Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen).

Note: [1] Tong Ren Gan Que Nei Zhang (Internal Cataract with Dry and Irregular Pupil): At the onset, sudden unbearable pain occurs. Upon close inspection, the pupil appears irregular, either on the left, right, upper, or lower side, incomplete and not round. The pupil's color may be white or black.
[2] A white pupil color indicates harm caused by the downward flow of brain fluid; it is appropriate to take Xie Gan Tang. A black pupil color indicates Gallbladder heat and Liver deficiency; it is appropriate to take Zhen Gan Wan.
Clause: Jiao Chuang (Pepper Granuloma) and Feng Su (Millet Granule) arise in the eyelids (Jian Bao). There is excessive tearing, difficulty opening the eyes, and painful friction/abrasion. Millet granules caused by Wind-Heat in the Spleen Meridian are yellow and soft; Pepper granules caused by Damp-Heat in the Spleen Meridian are red and hard.
After performing [Qing] washing (a specific eye cleansing therapy), use Qing Pi Yin (Clear the Spleen Drink), comprising Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Yuan Ming Fen (Mirabilite), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), and Hei Shen (Polygoni Multiflori Radix Praeparata).
Formula: Chu Feng Qing Pi Yin
Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Yuan Ming Fen (Mirabilite), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Hei Shen (Polygoni Multiflori Radix Praeparata), all in equal proportions.
Grind these herbs into coarse powder. Add two units of water, decoct until one unit remains. Strain and take warm at a time distant from meals.
Note: [1] The manifestations of Jiao Chuang and Feng Su may originate at the eyelid margins or within the palpebral conjunctiva. There is excessive tearing from the canthi, difficulty opening the eyes, a gritty sensation, and pain upon rubbing the eyeball.
[2] Su Chuang (Millet Granuloma) resembles millet grains, is yellow and soft, and is caused by Wind-Heat in the Spleen Meridian. Jiao Chuang (Pepper Granuloma) resembles pepper grains, is red and hard, and is caused by Damp-Heat in the Spleen Meridian.
[3] Both conditions are suitable for [Qing] washing to induce bleeding, followed by administration of Chu Feng Qing Pi Yin. For Jiao Chuang, increase the dosage of Huang Qin, Huang Lian, and Sheng Di Huang. For Feng Su, increase the dosage of Jing Jie and Fang Feng.
