33. When the mother is strong and the fetus is weak, it constitutes a disease during pregnancy (Taiqian); when the mother is weak and the fetus is strong, it brings misfortune postpartum (Chanhou). If both mother and fetus are in harmony, without excess or deficiency, delivery can be calm and worry-free, requiring no panic or haste.
[Note] This passage discusses distinguishing between excess and deficiency in the pregnant woman and the fetus she carries. If the pregnant mother has robust Qi and Blood but the fetal root (Taiyuan) is weak, there will likely be many illnesses during pregnancy; if the pregnant woman is frail but the fetal root is robust, the mother will likely suffer from many illnesses postpartum; if both mother and fetus are balanced, with neither excess nor deficiency, they will remain healthy and safe before and after delivery, allowing for peace of mind.
34. During pregnancy, conditions are predominantly Excess (Youyu), yet one must carefully examine for Deficiency (Buzu); postpartum, conditions are predominantly Deficiency, yet one must prudently assess whether Excess syndromes are present. The reason why postpartum conditions are often characterized by depletion lies in the varying states of excess and deficiency of the mother and fetus during pregnancy, which allows for prediction.
[Note] Ancient texts state: "There is no deficiency in pregnancy, and no excess postpartum," referring to general patterns. However, although pregnancy often presents with Excess syndromes, one must carefully observe instances of Deficiency; although postpartum conditions are mostly Deficient, one must carefully scrutinize cases where Excess syndromes coexist. To understand why postpartum conditions frequently involve depletion, one should investigate the excess/deficiency dynamics of the mother and fetus during pregnancy to predict outcomes.
