The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: In summer, when it is scorching hot, if a person travels along roads, heat-toxin enters the interior, combines with the five Zang organs, and the pathogenic factors become rampant. The stagnation and blood stasis strike the body.
The *Ge Shi Fang* records: For those who have died from heatstroke, they must not be exposed to sudden cold; exposure to cold will cause death again. The treatment method is as follows:
Make a ring out of mud. Surround the person's navel with it, and have three or four people urinate into it in turns.
Another prescription: One can also use a grass belt, or place the bottom of a clay bowl or a removed chariot wheel on the person's navel, inducing urination there, ensuring that the urine does not flow away. This method is also effective.
Yet another prescription: Grind dried ginger, tangerine peel, and licorice root into powder. Add a small amount to hot water, and let the patient swallow it slowly. Do not administer too much at once. It may also be boiled before consumption.
The *Duan Ju Fang* provides a prescription for treating death from heatstroke:
Take hot dust from the road and pile it over the heart region. Replace it when it cools down slightly. Stop when the breath becomes unobstructed.
Another prescription: Have the person lie supine. Encircle the navel with a grass belt and induce urination into the navel.
Another prescription: Decoct polygonum (Polygoni Multiflori Caulis/Herba, specifically referring to *Liao* here) thickly, and have the patient drink one to two sheng. This yields good results.
The *Qianjin Fang* provides prescriptions for treating death from heatstroke:
Open the deceased's mouth to ensure patency. Slowly pour warm water into the mouth. Gently lift the head and body of the deceased to allow the fluid to enter the intestines. After a short while, the person will revive.
Another prescription: Administer one cup of dijiang (earth slurry/water from deep soil). The patient will recover.
Another prescription: Hold a chicken or dog against the precordial region to apply warmth.
Another prescription: Drink one cup of Rehmannia juice (Rehmanniae Radix Juice).
Another prescription: Pile hot earth and burnt ash-soil over the heart region. This is excellent.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: When a person is traveling and encounters biting winds and bitter rains, heavy frost, or great snow, their clothes become soaked. Cold qi enters the Zang organs, causing Yin qi to close off.
It further states: A person who has frozen to death can still be treated within one day; beyond this time, treatment is ineffective.
The *Ge Shi Fang* treats cases of falling into water in winter, resulting in frozen limbs, rigidity, locked jaws, and only faint breathing remaining:
Use a large vessel to roast a large amount of ash until warm. Place it in a cloth bag and apply it thinly over the heart region. Replace it when it cools. Once warmth reaches the heart and circulation resumes, the eyes will move, and the mouth will open. (Warm wine... [text missing]; both the *Qianjin Fang* and *Jiuji Danyan Fang* agree with this.)
