For Fei Wei (Lung Atrophy), drinking human urine at any time is superior to other medicines. This is because Heaven generates Water with One, and Earth generates Fire with Two. Human urine is moistening, descending, salty, and cold in nature. The microcosm of the human body is one with the macrocosm of Heaven and Earth; therefore, it can harmonize Kan and Li (Kidney and Heart) within the body, and balance the Water and Fire within the body. Some reject it due to its perceived filth. How sad! These are those who have not heard of the Dao.
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) (equal parts, made into pills).
When the Heart Qi is hot, causing the meridians below to revolt and ascend, with a red complexion, full and overflowing collateral vessels, dislocation or traction at the joint hinges, and flaccid shins unable to bear weight, this is called Mai Wei (Vessel Flaccidity Syndrome). This formula is suitable for treating it.
The Heart is the Official of the Sovereign. The *Neijing* states: "The Ministerial Fire establishes its name, while the Ministerial Fire guards its position." This means the Sovereign Fire corrects its name and acts without exertion, while the Ministerial Fire guards its position to obey orders. Thus, when Heart Qi is hot and causes the lower meridians to revolt and ascend, it is because the Ministerial Fire obeys the Sovereign Fire. A red complexion indicates Heart disease manifesting in the color. Full and overflowing collaterals indicate that the Luo Collaterals are filled and overflow to the surface, which is the image of fire blazing upward. Dislocation at the joints refers to limbs being disjointed and difficult to move, caused by excessive Yang energy and pathogenic factors residing in the hundred joints. Flaccid shins unable to bear weight occur because when vessel qi overflows upward, the lower vessels become empty and weak, leading to flaccidity and inability to stand. Because the vessels are empty and flaccid, it is called Mai Wei (Vessel Flaccidity). In this formula, Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) drains Heart Fire, Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) drains Ministerial Fire, and Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) drains wandering Fire from the five Zang organs. When the Fire is eliminated, the vessels no longer revolt but follow their channels, allowing the hands and feet to function properly. For detailed examination, see the "Fire Section".
Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) (1 qian), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Ophiopogonis Tuber (Maidong), Asparagi Tuber (Tianmendong), Gentianae Radix (Longdancao), Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhizi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata cum Melle (Sheng Gancao), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) (each 0.5 qian), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) (0.7 qian), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi) (7 grains).
When Liver Qi is hot, with a bluish complexion, withered nails, bitter taste in the mouth, dry fascia, and spasmodic contraction, this is called Jin Wei (Sinew Flaccidity Syndrome). This formula is suitable for treating it.
The Liver belongs to Wood in the East. A bluish complexion indicates Liver disease manifesting in the color. The Liver governs the sinews, and the nails are the surplus of the sinews; Liver heat causes the nails to wither. Bitter taste in the mouth occurs because the Gallbladder is the Fu organ of the Liver, and the pharynx is its passage; Gallbladder heat causes bile to overflow into the pharynx, resulting in a bitter taste. The Liver governs the fascia; when the fascia is dry, it becomes rigid and contracts; severe contraction renders the hands and feet unusable, hence it is called Jin Wei (Sinew Flaccidity). In this formula, Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhizi), and Gentianae Radix (Longdancao) are sufficient to drain Liver Fire. With Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) as the sovereign herb, it can soothe and unblock the Liver and Gallbladder. When Wood is excessive and influenced by the transformation of Dry Metal, it leads to contraction and spasm. Tianmen Dong (Asparagi Tuber), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) have rich flavors and are moistening, thus sufficient to nourish the sinews and moisten dryness. Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root) and Renshen (Ginseng) are used to nourish Yang Qi. The Classics state: "Yang Qi, if refined, nourishes the Spirit; if soft, nourishes the sinews." Therefore, they are used. For cross-reference, see the "Fire Section".
