(Yan's Formula)
Treats qi rebellion caused by the seven emotions, presenting with rapid upper jiao panting, chest fullness and stifling sensation, and loss of appetite. (Anger causes qi to rise upward; excessive thinking causes qi to knot; persistent worry leads to frequent qi reversal; in severe cases, dizziness occurs.)
Betel Nut (Arecae Semen), Agarwood (Aquilariae Lignum), Peucedanum Root (Peucedani Radix), Ginseng Root (Ginseng Radix). Equal parts, ground into a thick paste and decocted for three or four boils, taken warm. Another prescription replaces Ginseng with Bitter Orange (Aurantii Fructus). Another prescription removes Ginseng and adds Immature Bitter Orange (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) and Costus Root (Saussureae Radix), taken with white wine as a grinding medium, named Wu Mo Yin Zi (Five Grinds Decoction): treats sudden death/coma due to violent anger, known as Qi Jue (Qi Reversal).
This is a formula for the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. When qi rebels upward, it should be directed downward; thus, Arecae Semen and Aquilariae Lignum are used (Arecae Semen is hard like ironstone, Aquilariae Lignum sinks alone in water, so both can direct qi downward); when qi is rebellious, it should be smoothed; thus, Peucedani Radix is used; Ginseng Radix is added to provide ascending action within descending action, and tonification within purgation, fearing damage to healthy qi. In cases of excess syndrome, Aurantii Fructus is still appropriate.
(Danxi's Formula)
Universally treats the six types of Yu (stagnation), presenting with chest diaphragm stuffiness and oppression, acid regurgitation, vomiting, and indigestion. (The six Yu refer to: Qi Yu [Qi Stagnation], Xue Yu [Blood Stagnation], Tan Yu [Phlegm Stagnation], Huo Yu [Fire Stagnation], Shi Yu [Dampness Stagnation], and Shi Yu [Food Stagnation]. Among these six, Qi Yu is primary; when qi moves freely, stagnation dissipates. Acid regurgitation and vomiting are due to phlegm-fire; indigestion is due to qi failing to move. Zhu Danxi said: When qi ascends, food naturally descends. The six Yu do not mention wind-cold because wind-cold stagnation transforms into heat. Hua Borun said: Yu means clustering and inability to vent; what should ascend cannot ascend, what should descend cannot descend, what should transform cannot transform, leading to abnormal transmission and manifestation of disease. Qi Yu presents with chest/diaphragm pain; Shi Yu presents with whole-body pain, triggered by yin-cold; Tan Yu presents with panting upon movement, deep and slippery pulse at Cun Kou; Huo Yu presents with dizziness/blurred vision, red urine, deep and rapid pulse; Xue Yu presents with limb weakness but ability to eat; Shi Yu presents with belching with sour odor, abdominal fullness, inability to eat. The Classic says: Wood Yu...)
Cyperus Rhizome (Cyperi Rhizoma, stir-fried with vinegar), Atractylodes Rhizome (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice water, stir-fried), Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Medicated Leaven (Medicated Massae Medicatae), Gardenia Fruit (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried until black). Equal parts, made into pills using medicated leaven paste. If dampness is heavy...; if Qi Yu is prominent, add Costus Root and Betel Nut...; Ginseng...; in winter add Evodia Fruit...; during menstruation...
This is a formula for the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian. Wu Hegao said: Yue Ju means to vent and resolve stagnation. Cyperi Rhizoma opens Qi Yu, Atractylodis Rhizoma dries out Shi Yu, Chuanxiong Rhizoma regulates Xue Yu, Gardeniae Fructus clears Huo Yu, Medicated Massae Medicatae digests Shi Yu. Chen Laizhang said: These all regulate qi; when qi flows smoothly, stagnation relaxes. (Zhu Danxi said: Yu belongs to dryness invasion; dryness corresponds to the Yangming Autumn Metal position. The Lung belongs to Metal, governs qi, and distributes yin and yang. Injury leads to loss of function, inability to ascend and descend, hence the Classic says... Four Zang... of, yin inside... lower... already... resolution... various... mouth...)
