Treats insufficiency of the Spleen and Kidney, deficiency damage due to excessive sexual activity, emaciation with weakness in the limbs, and a bluish-yellow complexion (this is a syndrome of dual injury to the Spleen and Kidney); also treats chronic hemorrhoids caused by blood deficiency.
Cangzhu Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (soaked in oil), Shudihuang Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, Wuweizi Fructus Schisandrae, Ganjiang Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (1 liang in spring and winter, 7 qian in autumn, 5 qian in summer), and date flesh.
This acts on the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Yu Jiayan stated: In this formula, Cangzhu is the Sovereign herb, Shudihuang is the Minister herb, Wuweizi is the Assistant herb, and Ganjiang is the Envoy herb; it treats the deficiency of both the Spleen and Kidney organs, while dispelling dampness from the Spleen and eliminating dryness from the Kidney, excelling in both aspects. It is profoundly effective, surpassing later formulas for dual tonification of the Spleen and Kidney which are often cluttered with numerous ingredients.
Treats insufficiency of essence and blood, flaccidity and weakness of sinews and bones, inability of the feet to bear weight, and bone-steaming tidal fever (The Liver governs the sinews; when blood is insufficient, sinews become flaccid; the Kidney governs the bones; when essence is insufficient, bones lose nourishment).
Huangbai Cortex Phellodendri (stir-fried with salt and wine), Zhimu Radix Anemarrhenae (stir-fried with salt and wine), Shudihuang Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, Hujiinggu Gu Hu Tigris Ossis (roasted with suet), Gui Ban Plastrum Testudinis (roasted with suet), Chenpi Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (moistened with salt water), Fuling Poria, Gancao Radix Glycyrrhizae, and Wuweizi Fructus Schisandrae.
This acts on the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Huangbai, Zhimu, and Shudihuang are used to strengthen Kidney Water and nourish Yin; Danggui Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Shaoyao Radix Paeoniae Alba, and Niuxi Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae are used to tonify Liver deficiency and nourish blood; Niuxi also guides the other herbs downward to strengthen sinews and bones, based on the principle that the Liver and Kidney share the same treatment approach. The turtle receives the densest Yin energy, so it serves as the Sovereign herb to tonify Yin; the tiger possesses the strongest Yin energy, so it serves as the Assistant herb to fortify bones. The reason for using the tibial bone is that even after death, a tiger stands without falling, as its strength lies in the anterior tibia; thus, it is used to treat lower limb conditions, following the principle of similarity. Suoyang Herba Cynomorii Tonifies essence and strengthens Yang, nourishes sinews, and moistens dryness; however, since these are primarily blood-nourishing herbs, Chenpi is added to regulate Qi, and Ganjiang is added to unblock Yang. Lamb meat is sweet and hot, belonging to Fire and providing great tonification, adhering to the meaning of "tonifying essence with flavor" and "tonifying form with form," thereby facilitating the communication of Qi and Blood and the mutual assistance of Yin and Yang. Named "Huqian Wan" (Tiger Hiding Pill), the tiger represents Yin and hiding. Also known as "Buyin Wan" (Yin-Tonifying Pill), implying that tonifying Yin allows for the harmonization with Yang. In cases where Yang is excessive, there is no need to drain Yang; rather, one should tonify Yin to match Yang, ensuring balance between Water and Fire, thereby avoiding complications of excess.
