Shi Zhu (Corpse Transmission) is one of the five Shi (Corpse) pathogens. Regardless of age, everyone has "corpse worms" within their abdomen. The nature of these corpse worms is to abhor filth; they easily attract external pathogenic factors and cause harm together. In children with weak blood and Qi, the spirit is also emaciated, thus making them susceptible to illness from Shi Zhu. The symptoms include taciturnity and an inability to pinpoint the exact location of the pain. There may be lingering chills and fever. If left untreated for years, it leads to death. After death, the pathogen can transmit to others, hence the name Shi Zhu. (Suitable formulas include Muxiang San from *Shenghui Fang*.)
Gu Zhu (Gourd Transmission) refers to the practice of collecting various poisons from snakes and insects in a container, allowing them to devour each other until only one remains—the most vicious and toxic, named Gu. It can change form with food and drink, enter the abdomen, regenerate, and consume the five Zang organs. Children infected present with symptoms identical to adults: stabbing pain and stifling sensation in the heart and abdomen. Acute cases lead to immediate death, while chronic cases drag on for years. The patient becomes emaciated and exhausted with lower bleeding, eventually dying from organ rot. Like Shi Zhu, it transmits to others after death, hence called Gu Zhu. (Suitable formulas include Fan Wang's Shiqiwu Wu Zishen Wan, Lingyangjiao San, Xionghuang San, Erke Wuzhong Gudufang, and Baigupi Fang.)
