[Shensi Wuyin Tang (Ginseng and Four Substances Decoction)] Treats Blood Deficiency. Qi fails to harmonize with blood, resulting in upward panting, spontaneous sweating, aversion to cold, pale complexion, floating pulse that is empty and choppy upon deep pressure. It is also indicated for patients who have previously experienced blood loss.
Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried) (2 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (2 qian), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (2 qian), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, wine-fried) (1.5 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (8 fen).
Crush the above herbs into coarse powder. Add two zhan of water, decoct until seven-tenths remain, and take warm.
[Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction)] Treats True Qi Weakness, shortness of breath, and weak pulse. Adding Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) creates Yigong San (Yi Gong Powder); adding Chen Pi and Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) creates Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction).
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (equal parts).
Crush the above herbs into coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add one zhan of water, decoct until seven-tenths remain, and take warm after meals.
[Jiuwei Qianghuo Tang (Nine-Ingredient Notopterygium Decoction)]
Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 1.25 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1 qian), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (4 fen).
Add three slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and one date. Add two zhan of water, decoct until eight-tenths remain, and take hot to induce sweating. Tao Jie'an stated: For exterior contractions in spring, summer, and autumn, presenting with headache, fever, aversion to cold, anhidrosis, floating-tight pulse, and Taiyang Exterior Syndrome, this balanced formula is suitable. Modifications should be made at the practitioner's discretion.
[Zhongjing Mahuang Tang (Mahuang Decoction by Zhang Zhongjing)] Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) Taiyang syndrome with floating pulse, stiffness and pain in the head and nape, lower back and spine pain, fever, aversion to cold, body aches, anhidrosis, and wheezing.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (1.5 liang), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (1 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 qian), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, skin and tip removed) (50 grains).
Crush into coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add two zhan of water, bring to a boil, skim off the foam, then decoct until seven-tenths remain. Take warm to induce sweating. If sweating occurs, do not finish the entire dose.
[Qingshu Yiqi Tang (Clear Summerheat and Tonify Qi Decoction)]
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (1.5 qian, reduce by 5 fen if sweating is scant), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (1.5 qian), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (1 qian), Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, rhizome removed), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (each 5 fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, wine-soaked), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, pith removed), Dang Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix caulis), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, heart removed) (each 3 fen), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (9 berries).
Add two large zhan of water, decoct until one zhan remains. Strain and take slightly warm after meals. Dosage should be adjusted according to circumstances. This formula was created by Li Dongyuan to treat dampness prevailing during the late summer earth phase, not merely summerheat. His discussion states: When summerheat and dampness are steaming and intense, contracting it causes fatigue in the four limbs, lack of spirit, chest fullness, shortness of breath, and heavy pain in joints. Or there may be rebellious qi with wheezing, fever with irritability, yellow frequent urination, and loose frequent stools. Or dysentery resembling yellow paste or rice water. Thirst may or may not be present; appetite is poor; spontaneous sweating or scant sweating occurs. Here, blood is diseased first while qi is not, and the pulse is flooding and slow. If qi and blood struggle, the pulse becomes even slower. Although symptoms may vary slightly, the climatic influence of summerheat and dampness remains the same. It is appropriate to treat with a clearing and drying agent. The *Neijing* states: Yang qi guards the exterior and secures the interior. Heat causes qi to leak; now summerheat pathogen attacks the defensive qi, causing fever and spontaneous sweating. Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), sweet and warm, tonifies as the Sovereign herb. Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), sweet and slightly warm, tonify the middle and benefit qi as Ministers. Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) promote diuresis and remove dampness. Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), sweet, bitter, and neutral, resolve muscle heat and use wind herbs to overcome dampness. Dampness prevails, food fails to digest, leading to fullness; thus, fried Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), sweet and acrid, and Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), acrid and warm, digest food and move qi. The Kidney dislikes dryness; urgently eat acrid to moisten it. Thus, Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), bitter, acrid, and cold, borrows the sweet flavor to clear heat. To tonify Kidney Water deficiency and nourish its source, Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), and Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), sour, sweet, and slightly cold, rescue damage from summerheat. They serve as Assistants to Geng Metal, named Qingshu Yiqi Tang.

This indicates pulse deficiency and blood deficiency. This condition often arises from hunger, overeating, or labor.
