[Scriptural Interpretation]
The Yellow Emperor asked: What the Master has said are all matters known to the patients themselves. For those who have not encountered external pathogenic factors, nor suffered from fright or alarm, yet suddenly fall ill, what is the reason? Is it solely due to the influence of spirits and ghosts? Qi Bo replied: There is also a cause for this. Pathogenic factors remain latent within without manifesting; coupled with mental aversion or excessive longing, internal disorder of Qi and Blood occurs, where righteous Qi and pathogenic factors contend with each other. The origin of such illness is subtle; it cannot be seen by eyes nor heard by ears, thus appearing as if caused by spirits and ghosts. The Yellow Emperor asked: Why can some illnesses be cured merely by Zhu You (a traditional method involving prayer and incantations)? Qi Bo answered: Ancient shamans understood the mutual overcoming nature of various diseases and knew the origins of illnesses beforehand, allowing them to be cured through Zhu You. ○ When human vitality is deficient, the Spirit wanders and loses its post, allowing external spirits to invade. If one’s Liver is deficient and encounters the failure of Jueyin Wind-Wood ruling the year, with Wood运 (movement/phase) being insufficient, White Corpse Ghosts will attack. If the Heart is deficient and encounters the failure of Ministerial Fire and Sovereign Fire ruling the year, with Fire运 being insufficient, Black Corpse Ghosts will attack. If the Spleen is deficient and encounters the failure of Taiyin Wet-Earth ruling the year, with Earth运 being insufficient, Green Corpse Ghosts will attack. If the Lungs are deficient and encounter the failure of Yangming Dry-Metal ruling the year, with Metal运 being insufficient, Red Corpse Ghosts will attack. If the Kidneys are deficient and encounter the failure of Taiyang Cold-Water ruling the year, with Water运 being insufficient, Yellow Corpse Ghosts will attack. (From *Ling Shu*)
[Philosophical Discourse]
According to the *Classic*, the explanation of Five Ghosts invading humans is most detailed. Essentially, all things in heaven and earth, despite their diversity, are transformations of the Five Elements. Human Zang organ Qi and the invasion of ghosts both operate within these Five Elements. Thus, the Five Ghosts act as pathogens based on what they overcome, following the principle of mutual restriction, which is natural. Regarding the unpredictable manifestations of ghosts in mountains and secluded places, if one comprehends the scriptural principles, all myriad forms are encompassed by the Five Elements. Treating them with counteracting methods leaves them no escape. However, ghosts originally have no form yet appear to take shape. If one can perceive the "being" within the "non-being," why not perceive the "non-being" within the "being"? The way to restore clarity is to rectify the mind to strengthen Qi, maintain emptiness and brightness to stabilize the Spirit. Once the Spirit is stable, the evil spirits will extinguish themselves. Where destiny lies, how can they impose misfortune upon humans?
This is the way to preserve wholeness and repel ghosts. An ancient sage said: "The tricks of mountain ghosts are limited; an old monk who sees nothing and hears nothing." This statement is profound. (From *Lei Jing*)
When the Mind is obscured by fortune or misfortune, spiritual ghosts capture it; when obscured by sexual desires, lustful ghosts capture it; when obscured by sorrow, sinking ghosts capture it; when obscured by indulgence, wild ghosts capture it; when obscured by oaths and curses, strange ghosts capture it; when obscured by reliance on medicines, material ghosts capture it. (From *Guan Yin Zi*)
When a patient sees colored ghosts with their own eyes, these are actually the primordial Spirits of the Five Zang organs. When the Spirit does not reside in its house but wanders outside, it is not truly a ghost. Asking others if they see anything confirms this; it is a disease of extreme deficiency of Yuan Qi. Lung deficiency presenting with White Ghosts, accompanied by blue complexion and lips, chills and fever, should be treated by tonifying Lung Qi greatly with Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) and Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), bringing peace to the body. Other organ deficiencies can be inferred similarly. (From *Yi Xue Liu Yao*)
The Ten Zhu (chronic, often infectious wasting diseases) include Qi Zhu, Lao Zhu, Gui Zhu, Leng Zhu, Sheng Ren Zhu, Si Ren Zhu, Shi Zhu, Shi Zhu, Shui Zhu, and Tu Zhu. The Five Shi (corpse-related pathologies) include Fei Shi, Dun Shi, Chen Shi, Feng Shi, and Fu Shi. All carry the Qi of ghostly pathogens, flowing through the body, causing alternating chills and fever, mental confusion, accumulating over years until stagnation leads to death. After death, they may infect others, even wiping out families, hence called Shi Zhu. (From *Qian Jin Fang*)
The *Nei Jing* never discussed evil spirits; when it mentions "excess of pathogenic factors leads to excess syndrome," it refers to the Six Exogenous Pathogens, not secular notions of supernatural entities. Zhu Danxi stated: Deficiency syndromes and Phlegm syndromes can resemble evil spirit possession. Since the Spirit is depleted, pathogens enter easily; Phlegm lodges in the Middle Jiao, obstructing ascending and descending mechanisms, causing the Twelve Officials (organs) to lose their functions, resulting in delusions of vision, hearing, speech, and movement. Overthinking can deplete Heart Spirit, causing Jing Qi to gather excessively in one organ, leading to alertness akin to madness, resembling ghost possession. These are all signs of disturbed Spirit. Although ancients had the Zhu You department, it was merely a technique of shifting Spirit and transforming Qi to resolve doubts and correct the mind, not to expel evil spirits. Nevertheless, in dark valleys, ape and fox spirits, resentful souls, plant essences, and aged poultry/dogs may cause disturbances, but they must enter through deficiency. When Righteous Qi is weak, clear Spirit cannot overcome hidden darkness, and it enters via the Mind. Evil thoughts attract similar chaotic spirits; deep fear creates doubt that confuses the mind. Symptoms include sallow emaciation, startling dreams, lethargy, incoherent speech, abnormal preferences, prolonged anorexia with unchanged expression, sudden recovery from critical states, accurate predictions of fortune/misfortune, violent screaming, disparate pulses (left vs. right, or floating/sinking variations), irregular rates and sizes. For such cases, tonify deficiency and calm the Spirit as the primary approach, assisting with expelling pathogens. Resolve Phlegm if present; purge accumulations if present. Use incantations and moxibustion for external symptoms; use upright words and sharp arguments to awaken the mind. Recovery is assured. Panic and pure attack methods damage Yuan Qi without curing the disease. (From *Feng Shi Jin Nang Mi Lu*)
[Supplement]
Chuan Zhu arises from carrying evil spirits and monsters. The Classic says: People suffering from annual disasters, influenced by ghostly essences, feel universal aversion and silence, unable to pinpoint their suffering, gradually becoming emaciated over years. It then transmits to others. Treat with formulas that clarify Spirit and remove filth, such as She Xiang (Musk) and Xi Yang Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn - note: protected species, historically used), to drive away evil, refine elixirs, and invite pure Qi. These are designed for Shi Zhu. (From *Ren Zhai Zhi Zhi Fang Lun*)
Moxibustion at Gui Ku (Ghost Cry) Acupoint: Bind the two thumbs together tightly. Apply moxa cone on the corner of the nail at the junction. Ensure heat penetrates the nail and flesh from four directions for efficacy. Moxa 7 cones or 14 cones. Also, Gui Yan (Ghost Eye) Acupoint is located on the big toe. (Qin Chengzu)
For possessions by mountain demons, tree spirits, foxes, insects, or snakes, applying raw Tung Oil to the lower body is excellent. Another unique method: wrap the head with the patient's own underwear; the magic will vanish permanently. Demons seek to steal Jing Qi but love cleanliness. Seeing filth makes them abandon the person. (From *Shi Shi Mi Lu*)
[Pulse Diagnosis]
Pulses indicating spirit possession vary suddenly in length, density, depth, and superficiality. Any pulse inconsistent with the clinical presentation indicates the action of the Five Shi Ghost Pathogens. (Yang Renzhai)
[Selected Cases]
Miss Yang, second daughter of Yang Jideng, fell ill. Her tendons twitched, muscles trembled, body was fatigued, and Qi was weak. I diagnosed this as severe fright and deficiency, recommending warm tonification. I added Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood) and Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphus Seed) to tonics for over ten doses, with no effect. I reflected: Not exogenous, not endogenous injury. Profuse sweating and trembling respond to tonics but show no improvement. She had no family trauma, yet looked devastated. Suddenly realizing: This must be spirit possession. Her face alternated between red and yellow. I stated: Pathogens have attached to the Zang organs; divine medicine can expel them. Jideng reported she foamed at the mouth, shivered into unconsciousness nightly, requiring ginger soup to revive. Watching her failed to stop it. I said: Why not tell me earlier? One dose will cure. Formula: Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn - note: protected species, historically used), Ling Yang Jiao (Antelope Horn), Long Chi (Dragon Teeth), Hu Wei Gu (Tiger Power Bone), Mu Li (Oyster Shell), Lu Jiao Shuang (Deer Antler Glue Frost), Ren Shen (Ginseng), Huang Qi (Astragalus). Powdered, taken with mutton broth. She slept peacefully, recurrence ceased, regarded as miraculous. My logic: Possession involves conflict between spirit and host Qi. Using animal relics guides the entity to attach to bones/horns, expelled via stool, mimicking ancient Zhu You techniques of shifting Spirit. (From *Yu Yi Cao*)
A woman was drained by a fox spirit. I treated her using methods to repair the "cauldron" (vital essence). The fox returned. I prescribed Dan Sha (Cinnabar), Ren Shen (Ginseng) decoction with Da Huan Dan (Great Return Pill). The fox dared not approach, staying several feet away, breathing audibly. Days later, her eyes blurred, nose bridge swelled hard, bedridden and refusing food. The fox used the "Three Steps Extraction" method. She recovered after taking Hui Tian Yin (Return Heaven Decoction). Taught her meditation practices (returning light, breath regulation). The fox died again. Crush fox skull, apply ash to swelling to flatten it. (Cheng Huazhong)
A woman presented with deficiency-like symptoms. A famous doctor declared her incurable. After deep thought, he suggested fresh Tiger Head might help. Obtained, he instructed her to wear thin cotton clothes, lie facing the wall. Secretly open tiger's mouth, bite her back spine. Let her scream, hold tight until tiger exhausts itself, then remove. Follow with restorative tonics and diet. Gradual recovery. Reason: Fox spirit possession is not curable by herbs alone. Tiger is king of beasts, feared by foxes. (From *Jian Wen Lu*)
