The *Qianjin* treatise states: The superior physician treats disease before it arises; the average physician treats disease that is about to arise; the inferior physician treats disease that has already arisen. I believe that knowing disease before it occurs is achievable only by those of supreme wisdom. Knowing disease at its initial stage is within the reach of those of average wisdom. As for seeking medical treatment after disease has already occurred, this is the common practice of ordinary people, and there is no need to discuss their level of wisdom. Sun stated: The sages established teachings so that every family could learn independently and every person could understand. If elders or relatives fall ill and cannot be treated, this is not loyalty or filial piety. These words can be considered extremely earnest and appropriate.
When Qi (vital energy) is not harmonious, various diseases arise spontaneously. The accumulation of many diseases all originates from deficiency. It is also said: Deficiency generates a hundred diseases. Medicinal herbs may have mutual antagonism; once entering the human abdomen, they contend with each other, their force surpassing swords and knives. Those who do not understand the nature and temperament of medicines should not take them. When taking any medicinal herbs or food, one must measure what is suitable for one's own constitution and nature, and should not take them simply because others find them effective.
When a person suffers from sores and ulcers that have not yet healed, sexual intercourse must be avoided.
During pregnancy, women eating sheep liver will cause their children to suffer many misfortunes. Eating goat meat will make children prone to illness. Eating donkey meat will prolong the delivery period. Eating rabbit or dog meat will cause children to be mute and cleft-lipped. Eating mule meat will lead to difficult labor. Eating chicken eggs and dried carp will cause children to have many sores. Eating mulberries and ducks will cause breech presentation. Eating sparrow meat with bean paste will cause many black spots on the child's face. Eating sparrow meat while drinking alcohol will cause the child's mind to be lustful and emotions chaotic, lacking a sense of shame. Eating soft-shelled turtle will cause the child to have a short neck. Eating iced sauce will induce abortion. Women who suffer frequent great frights will give birth to children prone to epilepsy. Urinating or defecating in inappropriate places will certainly lead to miscarriage or even death. If relatives involved in filth or mourning visit the postpartum woman, it will cause difficult labor and harm the infant. Not following the obstetric charts will cause much harm to mother and child. If childbirth occurs during "Fan Zhi" days (inauspicious days), wash water should be stored in vessels and covered only after the taboo month has passed. Too many visitors during labor causes difficult labor; anxiety and depression at the time of delivery also cause difficult labor. After the baby is born, one must not look at filth oneself. Hanging over a dry toilet when constipated leads to twelve chronic diseases. Sexual intercourse should be avoided within one hundred days postpartum. Using the toilet is strictly taboo; using a basin in the room is better. During summer childbirth, avoiding cooling off is prohibited. Within one hundred days, purgatives are taboo. If menstruation has not ceased, sexual intercourse is strictly taboo, leading to twelve diseases. Sleeping on wet, cold ground and engaging in sexual intercourse is strictly taboo, leading to twelve diseases. Washing with cold water is strictly taboo; engaging in sexual intercourse under these conditions leads to twelve diseases.
For newborn infants, if blue mud and evil blood in the mouth are not wiped with cotton-wrapped fingers, it enters the abdomen and generates a hundred diseases. Lifting the newborn too late causes cold invasion. The umbilical cord should be bitten through with clothing between teeth, not cut with a knife. Leaving the umbilical cord stump extending to the instep: if too short, it causes cold invasion and dysentery. Bathing after cutting the cord allows water into the navel, causing abdominal pain. The umbilical cord often contains worms; if not removed, they enter the abdomen and cause disease. Leaving the cord six inches long: if too long, it damages muscles; if too short, it damages internal organs. Failure to cut the cord promptly and incomplete drainage of fluids causes cold to generate "Umbilical Wind" (tetanus neonatorum). Newborn boys should be wrapped in their father's old clothes, girls in their mother's; wrapping too thickly damages the skin, harms blood vessels, and causes miscellaneous sores and jaundice. Keeping newborns too warm makes bones and sinews weak and flaccid. Changing the umbilical dressing and clothes in winter requires closing doors and windows and lighting fires. For three-day-old infants, excessive consumption of Cinnabar Honey (Zhu Mi) causes cold spleen and stomach, abdominal distension, preference for Yin Epilepsy, rapid breathing turning into lockjaw, and aberrant behavior. Frequent bathing while the umbilical sore is unhealed causes infant阴颓 (scrotal swelling). Overfeeding infants causes vomiting and wind attacking the navel. In summer, failing to remove "hot milk" (milk from a mother with heat) causes infant regurgitation; in winter, failing to remove "cold milk" causes coughing and dysentery. Breastfeeding immediately after sexual intercourse causes infant emaciation and inability to walk due to crossed legs. Breastfeeding while the mother has heat causes jaundice and anorexia. Breastfeeding while angry causes infant fright, Qi hernia, and upward Qi mania/epilepsy. Breastfeeding after recent vomiting/diarrhea causes infant weakness. Breastfeeding while intoxicated causes infant fever and abdominal fullness. Milk should be cooled thoroughly to dissipate heat; do not let heat rush out. Do not use leftover milk. Do not breastfeed when the mother is sleepy, fearing loss of rhythm and blocking the infant's nose/mouth.
Water temperature for bathing infants must be neither too hot nor too cold; otherwise, it causes fright and five-zang diseases. Infants should not bathe for long periods in winter (causes cold damage) or summer (causes heat damage). Frequent bathing with cold backs induces epilepsy. Lack of bathing causes hair loss in children.
Wind Epilepsy is caused by overdressing until sweating, then exposure to external wind entering the abdomen. Fright Epilepsy is caused by fright and loud crying. Food Epilepsy is caused by prior fasting followed by vomiting and heat transformation.
For healthy newborns, reverse acupuncture (Ni Zhen Jiu) is forbidden.
Thin clothing leads to indigestion of milk/food and sour-smelling stool, indicating impending Pi accumulation (masses); feeding exacerbates the disease.
For infants up to one year old, exposure to the breath of outsiders causes "Ke Wu" disease (alien qi invasion). Even family members returning from outside without avoidance cause Ke Wu. Wet nurses or parents returning from outside can also cause Ke Wu. Relatives or outsiders carrying coarse/bad qi from temples/shrines or animal odors cause Ke Wu. Laborers panting or wet nurses with unsettled milk qi cause Ke Wu. Breastfeeding after intoxication or sexual exhaustion is most severe and can kill the infant. Horse riders with horse sweat odor, without washing/changing, approaching infants cause "Horse Ke Wu." One-year-olds should not see horses or hear neighing, as this causes Ke Wu. Infant clothes/cotton/shoes must not contain hair. White clothes must not use green belts; green clothes must not use white belts, as these cause Ke Wu. Unusual people or objects from outside startle infants; prevention requires avoidance. If avoidance is impossible, burning cow dung to create smoke at the door is beneficial.
In late autumn/early summer, sudden cold mornings/evenings cause high fever and dysentery if not avoided. Undressing exposes infants to wind, causing Cold Damage (Shang Han). At night or rainy nights, infant clothes left outdoors attract "Diao Xing Gui Qin" (star-fishing ghost birds) that drop feathers into clothes, causing fatal epilepsy, especially in July/August. If a mother becomes pregnant again while the infant cannot walk, breastfeeding this milk causes Jia disease (masses). Overeating in children causes disease. Summer cold accumulation, excessive bathing, and mothers bathing in cold water then breastfeeding cold milk cause infant high fever; sudden rain/cooling triggers dysentery. Sudden cold in summer entering the stomach causes acute illness. Ke Wu causes abdominal distension/pain. ... [Text fragment] ... root of blindness involves sixteen factors: eating raw five pungents, hot drinks/food, wheat noodles, continuous drinking, unrestrained sex, extreme distance vision, frequent sun/moon gazing, night star gazing, night reading small print, moonlight reading, years of copying, fine carving, endless board games, long exposure to smoke/fire, excessive weeping, excessive head bleeding. Also caused by hunting, exposure to wind/frost/rain, chasing beasts against the wind day and night. Earth's cold/heat/wind/dampness create vapors; stepping on them causes "Feng Du," known as Hong Kong Foot (Gouty Arthritis/Podagra). Postpartum women must be cautious. Standing/sitting long on wet/cold ground in four seasons causes Hong Kong Foot. Sweating after wine, removing shoes/socks, and cooling in wind causes Gouty Arthritis. Patients with Hong Kong Foot must avoid anger, sex, beef/mutton, garlic, Houttuynia, Chinese cabbage, turnip, bottle gourd, wine, flour, butter, rice gruel, pork, chicken, goose, duck. Carp is allowed in one prescription, but generally fish is taboo. Raw fruits and sour foods are taboo. Recommended: raw cow milk, raw chestnuts, japonica rice, foxtail millet, broomcorn millet, soybeans, fermented beans, scallions, leeks, wild onions, pepper, ginger, tangerine peel.
Disease has three pitfalls: late detection, arrogance/laxity, and indecision. Violating these often costs life. Thus: Laws apply to the faithful, not the doubtful.
Approaching corpses: Apply Shao Jin Ya San to nostrils/ears. Visiting patients similarly. Wear a crimson pouch (one cubic inch), men on left, women on right.
Taking wind after eating causes Stomach Wind. Taking wind while drunk causes Leaking Wind. Taking wind after bathing causes Head Wind. Taking wind after sex causes Internal Wind. Nobles with weak bones/flesh, sweating from fatigue, lying down moving frequently, exposed to slight wind, develop Blood Bi disease. Sudden heat followed by cooling, or sudden cold, causes similar illnesses.
Winter cold requires utmost care; exposure causes Cold Damage. Four-season Qi can cause disease, but Cold Damage is heaviest due to its killing power. "Seasonal Qi" refers to seasonal reversals: spring cold instead of warm, summer cold instead of hot, autumn hot instead of cool, winter warm instead of cold.
After febrile/severe illness recovery, eating pork, sheep blood, fatty fish, grease causes severe dysentery, incurable. Eating cakes, sticky rice, malt candy, roasted meats, dates, chestnuts, hard-to-digest foods when stomach Qi is weak causes heat accumulation. Purging causes uncontrollable dysentery; not purging causes death. Both are dangerous and hard to treat. Eat only thin porridge; prefer hunger to fullness. Gradually introduce lamb, white gruel, soup, pheasant, rabbit, venison. Avoid pork/dog. Rest quietly; do not comb/wash early. Avoid physical exertion, excessive talking, and mental worry. "Upward Qi" causes relapse; female exhaustion causes tongue protrusion and death. Sex within 100 days of recovery without strength restoration is fatal. Eating meat/noodles within 5 days causes relapse/severe weakness. Raw fish causes persistent dysentery. Raw vegetables cause permanent complexion issues. Drinking cold water after sweating damages pericardium, causing irreparable deficiency. Raw dates/sheep meat cause upper diaphragm heat. Dog/sheep meat causes bone heat. Fish/meat/melons/raw vegetables cause body heat. [Missing text] causes severe relapse. Early rising/exertion/excess rich food causes near-death state.
Grain Jaundice is caused by starvation followed by overeating, stirring stomach Qi. Wine Jaundice is caused by drunkenness, wind exposure, and water immersion. Female Labor Jaundice is caused by heavy labor/heat followed by sex and water immersion. Yellow Jaundice: Blowing air into patient's nose via bamboo tube is fatal; beware.
Summer heat injury leads to Autumn Malaria. Winter wind cold hides in marrow; summer effort opens pores, allowing evil Qi, causing... [Missing text] sexual damage, testicular retraction, tendon spasms.
Eating raw food causes worm eggs to hatch. Entering abdomen, they become worms/snakes/fish/turtles.
Fatigue or irregular diet causes hematemesis.
After medication-induced vomiting/diarrhea, keep mouth closed, speak little, rest on warm bed with warm food in windless place.
Sweating from work in wind, excessive sex, drunkenness/fullness acting leads to constrained Heart Qi, shortness of breath, palpitations, and Wind Epilepsy.
Hot hair bath with wet brain condensation, unfinished sweating, causes Damp Epilepsy.
Great fright, wind exposure, falling from height causes joy/sorrow, fear, feeling haunted.
Blows/falls, drunken sex, sweating in wind damage Spleen.
For dysentery, stopping medicine initially worsens symptoms; ignorance leads to stopping, which is error. Continue taking it. Dysentery food should be well-cooked; avoid overeating.
For Gan disease (infant malnutrition), salt, soy sauce, vinegar, butter, oil, dates are taboo. White rice, fermented beans, alfalfa, lettuce, turnips are allowed.
Avoid eating/drinking during solar/lunar eclipses; causes abdominal worms, imperfect offspring, eclipse sores. Do not breastfeed during eclipses. Nine Worms are fierce, extreme afflictions. Bathing with Bai Yan Cao is good. Roots/leaves usable, aromatic, disliked by corpse worms.
Before tonics/treatments, remove worms, phlegm-fluids, old stasis completely, or medicine fails.
