Treatise on Three Topics
Commentary: Taking stone pills/powders and wine, or even taking different stones alone, if immediate efficacy is not seen, one might think the drug power is insufficient. Later, when symptoms erupt, one does not suspect it is caused by the stone, nor does one follow the regimen for making/taking stone drugs. Instead, other treatments are used, often leading to disaster. The following briefly outlines the regimen and precautions:
1. Headache as if splitting: Caused by eating hot food leading to accumulation (pi). Urgent purgation will cure it.
2. Aversion to food smells resembling dead matter: Caused by eating warm food leading to accumulation. Urgent purgation is needed. If purgation fails, quickly eat cold food forcibly; this will cure it.
3. Eyes feeling as if they will protrude: Caused by heat invading the Liver. Urgent purgation will stop it.
4. Sore throat, nasal congestion, clear runny nose: Caused by wearing thick clothes near fire. Remove clothes, expose to wind, and apply cold stone to the throat/pharynx. No washing needed.
5. Lower back pain as if breaking: Caused by thick clothes raising body temperature. Wash with water and apply cold stone.
6. Difficulty defecating, abdomen hard like a coiled snake: Caused by long-term warmth accumulation and dry feces remaining. Apply Su Mi Gao (Butter and Honey Paste), adjust to appropriate temperature, take 1-2 sheng. Moistening the intestines will cause evacuation. If further purgation is impossible, stop.
7. Dizziness and fainting: Caused by thick clothes and heat. Acupuncture at the head and wash with cold water will stop it.
8. Dysuria/inability to urinate: Caused by sitting long with lower body heat or riding horses introducing heat to the Bladder. Eat cold food/drink, wash with cold water, and apply cold stone two or three times. If ineffective, purge. Failure to purge can be fatal.
9. Foot pain as if breaking: Caused by long sitting with lower body heat. Sleep on a single bed, exert yourself, wash with cold water to stop it.
10. Chills, trembling head unable to support itself: Caused by insufficient food, drug qi moving in skin/muscle, Five Viscera losing control, hundred vessels shaking, competing with healthy qi. Forcefully drink hot wine to harmonize vessels, force-eat cold rice to settle viscera, force-move to regulate joints, force-wash to unblock stagnation. Once wine circulates and joints soften, the mind becomes clear.
11. Abdominal distension as if dying: Caused by long sitting in heat, warm clothes, lack of food/washing/exercise. Wash with cold water, expose to wind to cool, will cure. Cold food is also suitable.
12. Involuntary passing of gas: Caused by heat exposure without timely washing. Wash with cold water to cure.
13. Heart pain like stabbing: Caused by not eating/washing when necessary, cold/heat clashing, qi knotting in the heart. Act naturally, drink hot wine to move qi. Soak cloth in cold water, apply to painful area, change when warm. Quick relief follows. Then eat cold food; more is better. Among pains, heart pain is worst; save urgently with hot wine.
14. Involuntary defecation: Caused by lower body heat rising to Stomach/Abdomen. Wash with cold water to stop.
15. Qi failure, jaw locked open: Caused by cold/heat clashing. Patient unaware, needs rescue. Force-feed hot wine. If cold qi in throat causes vomiting, repeatedly feed and vomit until half a day passes and wine goes down. Cure. If not, death ensues.
16. Vomiting immediately after eating: Caused by accumulation (pi). Urgent purgation. Failure to purge is fatal.
17. Thick, frequent urination: Caused by hot food/drinks, pastries, fruits. Wash with cold water, take small amounts of Zhi Zi Tang (Gardenia Decoction). Cure.
18. Foul rot in lower parts: Caused by sitting on thick mats with lower body heat. Sit in cold water to stop.
19. Tinnitus like wind, discharge: Caused by overexertion, immoderate sex, qi rushing to ears. Eat cold food frequently, abstain from sex to cure.
20. Eye pain like stabbing: Caused by heat entering Stomach/Liver rushing to eyes. Eat cold food frequently, wash with urine at dawn. Stop in three days.
21. Mouth ulcers, stiff tongue, inability to taste: Caused by low grain qi, drug qi accumulating in Stomach tube. Take three doses of Zhi Zi Tang (Gardenia Decoction) to stop.
22. Sores between toes: Caused by warm shoes/socks. Walk on cold ground, wash with cold water to stop.
23. Asymmetric limb pain, joint laxity, carbuncles/nodules: Caused by staying in one position too long, concentrated heat. If hard/painful, carbuncle forms. Wash with cold water, apply cold stone, drink hot wine to disperse heat. Continue washing with cold water for days until cured. Limitless washing until cured. If uncured, take whetstone (hand-sized), heat red-hot, quench in vinegar, grind fine, mix with cold water, apply 2-3 times daily.
24. Excessive sleepiness/unawareness: Caused by long sitting in heat/stuffiness. Rise urgently, wash with cold water, eat cold food. Self-cure.
25. Insomnia at night: Caused by low food intake, internal heat. Take Zhi Zi Tang (Gardenia Decoction), eat cold food. Stop.
26. Alcohol intolerance, inability to eat, alternating chills/fever, worsening without washing, improving with washing but causing chill, lasting days/months, accompanied by sorrow, anger, fear, confusion: Caused by long-term warmth accumulation, improper rest, hot food causing internal excess, heat combining with drug qi, cold/heat clashing. Washing alone fails. Formerly, Huangfu Shi suffered thus, weeping before food, holding knife to suicide, stopped by relative. Forced cold food/water wash, stopped disaster. During crisis, family helpless. Third brother Shi Yuan found San Huang Tang (Three Yellows Decoction), administered, stool passed, cured. Hence used for emergencies.
27. Chills when undressing, heat when dressing: Caused by lack of adaptation during dressing changes. Dress when slightly cold, undress when slightly hot. Washing wakes/alerts. Do not endure; non-compliance causes disease.
28. Rotting armpits: Caused by arms touching. Separate with object, wash with cold water, apply cold stone to stop.
29. Vomiting/reversal, throat injury, clear blood: Caused by sleeping on warm/hot food. Drink cold water, apply cold stone to throat to stop.
30. Nose smelling like rotten eggs: Caused by hot clothes/warm food. Undress, eat cold food, wash with cold water to stop.
31. Gum swelling, lip rot, toothache, jaw lock: Caused by heat exposure without relief. Open mouth to wind, let cold water enter throat/pharynx, rinse cold water three times, click teeth thirty-six times to stop.
32. Whole body swelling/pain, inability to turn: Caused by long rest, no alcohol, drug qi sinking in skin, blocked vessels. Drink hot wine, wash with cold water, exert self, walk. Cure. If unable to walk, help walk to soften joints. Do not overdo. Re-wash if hot. Wine is best.
33. Blindness/vision loss: Caused by hot diet, warm dwelling. Eat cold food, wash with cold water, undress. Vision clears.
34. Diarrhea like cold invasion: Caused by hot diet. Often mistaken for acute disease or stagnation. Actually caused by heat. Do not doubt. Undress quickly, eat cold food, drink hot wine. Cure.
35. Joint soreness: Caused by thick clothes/quilts. Sleep on single bed, thin quilt, old clothes. Cure. Even in winter cold, expose head to wind, apply cold stone. If stuffy, loosen belt, cold bath. Do not endure illness fearing bath.
36. Trembling/chills, fever like warm malaria: Caused by fasting, no washing, no exercise, foul food. Urgently eat cold food, wash with cold water, walk multiple times to stop.
37. Joint stiffness, inability to bend/extend: Caused by thick clothes, long sitting/rest, no labor, drug qi not dispersing, invading sinews/blood. Warm self by effort, wash with cold water, drink hot wine. Cure. Move/exert to generate heat. Not via thick clothes/fire. If uneven, lose regulation, re-wash if hot.
38. Inability to tolerate cold food: Caused by long cold diet, loss of taste. Make white porridge mixed with wine and butter, eat hot once or twice. If stuffy/hot, return to cold food/drink. Stop.
39. Shang Han (Cold Damage) or warm malaria: Caused by heat. Can treat with regular medicine, no harm. Do not take hot medicines. Shang Han/Malaria medicines remove heat and break accumulations. Compatible with cold food, can be taken generally.
40. Drug eruption causing coma/unconsciousness: Caused by excessive heat, insufficient food, evil conflicting with healthy nature. Drink hot wine, eat cold food, wash with cold water, exert self. Cover head with wet cloth, change when warm. Exert self. Cure.
41. Muscles hard as wood/stone, immovable: Caused by hot food/warm sleep creating accumulation, long-term retention, blocked viscera, blocked vessels. Purge. Must eat cold food, drink cold beverages, wash with cold water, exert self. Cure.
42. Edema of limbs/face: Caused by warm food, long-term lack of labor, drug qi separated from healthy qi. Drink hot wine, eat cold rice, exert self, walk, bathe. Stop.
43. Migratory muscle pain like wandering wind: Caused by heat. Not actual wind. Wash with cold water, apply cold stone to stop.
44. Days of chills/fever, mouth open/tongue out, eyes staring up, ignoring people, using hundreds of stones of water for washing without relief: Caused by inability to exert/walk, drinking cold wine/eating hot food. Like a person with cold below heart, saving with cold water worsens it. Severe case: qi condenses to ice. Heat application/drinking melts ice, opens qi, person recovers. Drug qi gathers in heart, causing chills. Urgently drink hot wine to unblock limbs, then wash with cold food/water to stop.
45. Arm/leg spasmodic pain: Caused by long sitting/sleeping in warm places, heat entering abdomen attaching to bone. Wet cloth with cold water, press on area, change when warm. Stop within three days.
Above: For anyone taking stone drugs who falls ill, first use Stone Detoxification methods to assess. If ineffective, then use other formulas. The previous forty-five items describe illnesses from improper regimen of stone pills/powders. Some resolve with assessment. Modern people often take single stones like Zhong Ru, Fan Shi, Tao Hua Shi, Zi Shi, or mix with herbs. Though not "Five Stones," they follow similar rules for regimen, taboos, and symptom management. People dismiss single stones, preferring large powders, leading to eruptions and danger. Single stone takers must regulate. If taboos broken and symptoms match above, follow previous methods for certain cure.
Commentary: Regulating post-stone eruption involves many matters, but essentially violates normal human physiology/nature. Follow easy regulations: Six Reversals, Seven Urgencies, Eight Impossibles, Three Certainties.
Six Reversals:
1. Wearing heavy clothes causes chill.
2. Hunger produces foul odor.
3. Extreme fatigue requires self-exertion.
4. Warmth causes dysentery.
5. Diet desires cold.
6. Swelling/sores require water washing.
Seven Urgencies:
1. Wash when due, do not miss time.
2. Eat when due, do not fast.
3. Wine must be clear, pure, hot.
4. Clothes warm, remove immediately.
5. Food must be cold.
6. Food quantity not a worry (eat much).
7. Bedding must be thin.
Eight Impossibles:
1. Winter cold: desire for fire is impossible.
2. Diet: desire for hot food is impossible.
3. Rash: self-doubt is impossible.
4. Fear/avoid wind/dampness is impossible.
5. Extreme state: desire not to walk is impossible.
6. Diet: fear of eating much is impossible.
7. Dwelling: desire for thick mats is impossible.
8. Desires: indulging will is impossible.
Three Certainties:
1. Purposefully violate common sense.
2. Entrust mind, abandon roots.
3. Rest/sleep must be cold.
Above: Anyone taking stone drugs who follows these Six Reversals, Seven Urgencies, Eight Impossibles, Three Certainties, though not fully curing the disease or returning to perfect health, can eliminate sudden morning/evening illnesses.
