When an infant reaches thirty-two days and one night, and then sixty-four days, the process of "Bian" (change) and "Zheng" (steaming) occurs repeatedly, continuing until five hundred seventy-six days. In total, there are nine Bian and eight Zheng, after which the child begins to resemble an adult. These changes and steams serve to nourish the blood vessels and transform the five Zang organs. Thus, upon completion of each Bian, the infant's temperament may suddenly seem different. Signs include fever, chaotic pulse, sweating, unclear gaze, slight signs of fright, refusal to nurse, small white blisters appearing on the upper lip resembling pearls, cold ears, and cold buttocks. Urine output may be slightly reduced or abnormal. In cases of Jian Zheng (combined steaming), symptoms are more severe. Treatment should first induce sweating using the following formula:
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed) and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) each 1 fen; Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, skin and tips removed, stir-fried until color changes) 2 fen.
First, pound Mahuang and Dahuang into a powder. Separate Xingren and pound it until it resembles fat/paste. Then, gradually incorporate the powder into the Xingren paste, pounding until well mixed. Place the mixture in a vessel containing honey. For a one-month-old infant, administer a pill the size of a mung bean, mixed with breast milk. Hold the infant to induce sweating. After sweating, apply warm powder to the body and protect from wind exposure. For a hundred-day-old infant, administer a pill the size of a jujube pit, adjusting dosage based on the infant's size, until recovery. If not fully recovered, proceed with purgation using the following formula:
Daizhe (Haematitum), Chishizhi (Pyroferrum) each 1 liang; Badou (Crotonis Fructus, heart and skin removed, fried) 30 grains; Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, skin and tips removed, fried) 50 grains.
First, pound Daizhe and Chishizhi into powder. Next, pound Badou and Xingren separately until they resemble frost. Add these two powders to the previous mixture and pound three thousand times until thoroughly combined. If the mixture is too hard, add a little honey and pound further. Store in a sealed container. For a thirty-day-old infant, administer one pill the size of a hemp seed, followed by a small amount of breast milk to help swallow. Wait a short while before giving a little more milk; do not overfeed. By midday, mild diarrhea should occur, and heat will subside. If not completely resolved, administer another pill the next morning. For a hundred-day-old infant, administer a pill the size of a mung bean, adjusting dosage accordingly. This
