Yin-pattern Cold Damage (Yin Zheng Shanghan), also known as Sexual-intercourse-associated Cold Damage (Jia Se Shanghan); commonly called Yin-clamping Cold Damage (Jia Yin Shanghan). Initially due to sexual activity, subsequently contracting cold pathogenic factors, leading to decline of Yang and excess of Yin, with all six pulses deep and hidden.
Severe colicky pain in the lower abdomen, cold extremities, retraction of the scrotum in men or nipples in women, or flexion and purplish-black discoloration of hands and feet. If blackening is severe, jaw stiffness and cessation of breath occur. Urgent purgation is indicated:

Decoct in 4.5 bowls of water to obtain one bowl, take in one dose. Shortly thereafter, the pulse will emerge and the body will become warm.
This syndrome refers to illness contracted by male or female patients who engage in sexual intercourse shortly after recovering from Cold Damage (Shanghan) before full recovery. When a man whose disease has just healed but not yet stabilized engages in intercourse with a woman and contracts the disease, it is named Yang Yi (Yang Transmission); when a woman whose disease has just healed but not yet stabilized engages in intercourse with a man and contracts the disease, it is named Yin Yi (Yin Transmission). The condition manifests as heavy body, urgency and tension in the lower abdomen, possibly drawing the genitalia into cramps, heat rushing up to the chest, heaviness of the head making it difficult to lift, opacity in the eyes, and rigidity of the four limbs. Without prompt treatment, death often ensues. For women suffering from Yang Yi, the appropriate formula uses:
Dried Ginger Rhizome (Ganjiang) 4 liang.
Pound into powder, mix with boiling water, take in one dose; cover warmly to induce sweating for resolution.
For men suffering from Yin Yi, use:
Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (Xiebai) one large handful, Mouse Excrement (Shufen) 14 pieces.
Boil in 5 sheng of water, reduce to 2 sheng, drink completely. Lie warm to induce sweating for cure.
Alternatively, for men suffering from Yin Yi, burn the area near the vulva of a woman, collect the ash as a powder, take one fangcun bi (a measure roughly equivalent to a square inch spoonful), three times daily. Urination will become smooth, and slight swelling of the glans penis indicates cure. If the patient is a woman, take the corresponding part of a man using the same method, delivered with wine and water.
