Patients with wind disease (Feng Bing). The pulse at the Kidney position is rapid, floating, and sinking. If there is unceasing sweating and audible respiration, it indicates death; otherwise, it indicates survival.
Patients with Qi disease. The entire body is swollen, the four limbs cannot be controlled, panting occurs intermittently, and the limbs are cold and damp. A sinking and small pulse indicates death, while a floating and large pulse indicates survival.
Patients with Lao disease (Consumptive Disease). Rectal prolapse, emaciation where flesh and bone separate, scattered voice, hematemesis, involuntary erection of the penis, nocturnal emissions in dreams, irregular respiration, chills during the day and fever at night indicate death. Expectoration of pus and blood also indicates death. If the pulse is not rapid but has a root, and the cheeks are not red, it indicates survival.
Patients with Chang Pi (Intestinal Dysentery/Pus and Blood Discharge). Passage of pus and blood. If the patient's pulse is urgent, the skin is hot, food intake is impossible, the abdomen is distended, and the eyes are fixed/glassy, it indicates death. If the whole body is cold and the pulse is sinking and fine/weak, it also indicates death. If food intake remains normal, and the pulse is forceful whether floating or sinking and does not cease, it indicates survival.
Patients with Heat disease. Cold extremities, weak pulse, aversion to seeing people, inability to eat, and continuous diarrhea indicate death. If food can be ingested, the extremities are warm, the pulse is large, speech is delirious, and sleep is impossible, it indicates survival.
Patients with Cold disease. Delirious speech, insomnia, cold body, rapid pulse, panting, and fixed gaze indicate death. A forceful pulse without panting indicates survival.
Yang disease patients (The section regarding mental confusion is missing in Zhao Kaimei's edition). Mental confusion, lack of clarity during sleep, disordered speech. A pulse that is forceful whether floating or sinking indicates survival. A pulse that is weak, along with inability of food to enter the stomach and irregular diarrhea, indicates death.
Chronic disease patients. A large pulse with a thin body, insufficient food intake to fill the intestines, speech as if healthy, but exhaustion when sitting or lying down indicates death. If dietary intake is regulated, the pulse is small but forceful, speech is slightly hoarse, no black qi appears on the forehead, and stool is dry and difficult to pass, it indicates survival.
Generally speaking, Yang diseases presenting Yin symptoms, Yin diseases presenting Yang symptoms, emaciation with a large pulse, obesity with a weak pulse, chaotic changes between upper and lower parts, inversion of Yin and Yang, and mutual aggression of cold and heat all belong to inauspicious signs. Following the disease pattern leads to survival; resisting it leads to death. Therapeutic methods require deep and careful consideration.
Those who were previously healthy but experience the severance of the Five Elements die. Those who were previously healthy but undergo sudden personality changes die. Those who were previously healthy but suddenly speak deliriously die. Those who were previously healthy but suddenly become mute die. Those who were previously healthy but suddenly suffer from rapid panting die. Those who were previously healthy but suddenly experience rigidity and syncope (or stroke) die. Those who were previously healthy but suddenly go blind die. Those who were previously healthy but suddenly go deaf die. Those who were previously healthy but suddenly become flaccid and weak die. Those who were previously healthy but suddenly develop swelling and fullness die. Those who were previously healthy but suddenly experience constipation of both large and small bowels die. Those who were previously healthy but suddenly have no detectable pulse die. Those who were previously healthy but suddenly fall into a stupor resembling drunkenness die. All these cases occur because the internal vital Qi has been exhausted (or severed) first. Resistance leads to immediate death; compliance may extend life by two years, but ultimately, none survive.
