Slight fever. Exterior deficiency (weakness of the defensive Qi protecting the exterior). Perspiration that does not cease. This may be caused by the physician inducing sweating excessively, leading to further exterior deficiency and a pulse that is not firm. The treatment utilizes Wang Haicang's Huangqi Decoction.
Astragali Radix (Huangqi), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu)
Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishaoyao) (each 1 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (7 qian half), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) (5 qian)
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. For each dose, take an appropriate amount. Add two zhan of water and three slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang). Decoct until reduced to eight-tenths. Take warm.
Body temperature is cool. Cold sweat appears on the forehead and back of the hands. The treatment utilizes Sini Tang (Four Reversal Decoction) with added Ginseng Radix (Renshen). (Formula seen previously).
(Evil qi takes advantage of the deficiency and knots in the heart region, causing hardness, fullness, and pain, which cannot be pressed by hand. The pain radiates to the umbilicus and abdomen, making them hard; this is named Major Jie Xiong (Chest Binding). If pressing causes pain in the heart region, this is named Minor Jie Xiong.)
The chest and heart area protrude, with severe pain that cannot be touched. For mild cases, Zhishi Lizhong Wan (Immature Bitter Orange and Middle-Regulating Pill) is used; for severe cases, Daxiexiong Wan (Major Chest-Binding Pill) is used.
[Zhongjing's Daxiexiong Wan from *Huoren Shu*]
Poria (Fuling), Ginseng Radix (Renshen) (each 2 liang), Immature Bitter Orange Fructus (Zhishi) (bran-fried, 16 pieces), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu)
Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang) (processed), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (roasted, each 2 liang)
The above are ground into powder, mixed evenly with refined honey. Each liang of powder is made into four pills. Dissolve one pill in hot water and take.
[Zhang Zhongjing's Daxiexiong Wan]
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) (3 liang), Lepidii Semen (Tinglizi) (fried), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren) (fried, skin and tips removed), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao) (each 7 qian half)
The first two herbs (Dahuang, Tinglizi) are ground into powder. The Xingren and Mangxiao are ground into a paste. Mix with the powder and form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose. Separately, pound Gansui Radix (Gansui) powder to one qian bi.
White honey, one large spoon.
Two zhan of water, decoct until seven-tenths remain. Take all at once. Bowel movement occurs after one night. If no bowel movement, take again. Stop when bowel movement occurs. However, Gansui is potent; use with caution after carefully assessing excess or deficiency.
If pressing the heart region causes pain and the pulse is floating and slippery, treat with Zhang Zhongjing's Xiaoxiexiong Tang (Minor Chest-Binding Decoction).
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) (2 qian half), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia) (6 qian), Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualu Shi) (one large fruit, use one-quarter)
Add three zhan of water. First decoct Gualu Shi until reduced to one-and-a-half zhan. Remove dregs. Add the previous two herbs (Huanglian, Banxia). Decoct until one zhan remains. Divide into two doses. Relief occurs upon purging yellow phlegm-fluid.
