益阴补气丸 治证上同。
Shaoyao Qinggan San Formula: Treats excessive eye discharge, tight and gritty eyelids, photophobia (aversion to light), red vessels traversing the sclera, and constipation of the internal organs.
Herbs: Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 3 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) (each 2.5 fen), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 3 fen), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (2.5 fen), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (2 fen), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 2.5 fen), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (each 2 fen), Huashi (Talcum), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 3 fen), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (4 fen), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (3.5 fen).
Total eighteen ingredients, all coarsely crushed. Combine as one dose, add two zhong of water, decoct until one zhong remains, take hot after meals.
The above formula treats diseases caused by excessive heat counter-acting (fire pathogen overwhelming metal). This is a condition where wind-heat is uncontrolled; if heat is severe leading to hard stool, it may be used as a temporary measure. Since these are bitter-cold herbs, which can damage stomach qi, Baizhu's sweet-warm nature and Gancao's sweet-neutral nature are used first to protect stomach qi as the Sovereign (Jun); next, the acrid-warm properties of Chuanxiong, Fangfeng, Jingjie, Jiegeng, and Qianghu act as Ministers (Chen) to ascend, disperse, clear, and benefit; then, the slightly bitter properties of Shaoyao, Qianhu, and Chaihu, along with the slightly bitter-cold properties of Bohe, Huangqin, and Shanzhi, serve as Assistants (Zuo) for both guiding and attacking; finally, the bitter-cold properties of Zhimu, Huashi, and Shigao, and the greatly bitter-cold properties of Dahuang and Mangxiao act as Envoys (Shi) to驱逐 (expel) excessive heat. If the stool is not hard, reduce the dosage of Dahuang and Mangxiao; this is the "attack against rebellion" treatment method. Taking a large dose hot is a "contrary treatment" (Fan Zhi).
Tongqi Lizhong Wan: Treats the same symptoms as above.
Herbs: Baizhu (1 liang), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Qianghuo (each half liang), Huangqin (1.5 liang), Huashi (take powder separately, 1.5 liang), Dahuang (2.5 liang), Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen, take powder, 1.5 liang).
Except for Huashi and Qianniu which are ground into extremely fine powder separately, mix the remaining herbs into a fine powder, combine evenly with the above powders, add water to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, increasing to 100 pills, taken after meals before sleep with tea water.
The above formula uses Baizhu's bitter-sweet-warm nature to remove heat in the stomach as the Sovereign; Baizhi's acrid-warm resolving and benefiting, and Qianghuo's bitter-sweet-neutral slightly warm nature to unblock and benefit all joints as Ministers; Huangqin's slightly bitter-cold to treat heat generation, and Huashi's sweet-cold slippery nature to promote urination, thereby clarifying turbidity as Assistants; Dahuang's bitter-cold to unblock bowels and purge various excess heats, and Qianniu's bitter-cold (or acrid) to promote bowel movements and remove wind toxins as Envoys, also an attack method. For conditions of uncontrolled wind-heat with severe heat and hard stool, it can also be used concurrently. However, Qianniu is toxic and not a non-toxic herb from Shennong; combining it with Dahuang takes advantage of its fierce and rapid nature. Generally, it should not be used long-term as it damages Yuan Qi; it is a temporary medication, adjusted according to deficiency or excess.
Huanglian Tianhua Fen Wan: Treats the same condition as before.
Herbs: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (1 liang), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix) (4 liang), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Chuanxiong, Bohe (each 1 liang), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (2 liang), Huangqin, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (each 4 liang), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (6 liang).
Grind into fine powder, add water to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, increasing to 100 pills, taken after meals before sleep with tea water.
The above formula is designed for excessive heat counter-acting without organ constipation. For conditions of uncontrolled wind-heat with mild heat, it can also be taken. Huanglian and Tianhuafen's bitter-cold nature serves as the Sovereign; Juhua's bitter-sweet-neutral as Minister; Chuanxiong's acrid-warm and Bohe's acrid-bitter as Assistants; Lianqiao and Huangqin's bitter-slightly cold, and Huangbai and Zhizi's bitter-cold as Envoys. Together they clear heat and benefit, treating redness and swelling pain of the eyes.
Huanglian Luganshi San: Treats broken and ulcerated eye sockets, aversion to sunlight, and photophobia. Other treatments are the same as above.
Herbs: Luganshi (Calaminus), Huanglian (4 liang), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum, add as needed).
First, place Luganshi in a strong fire until red-hot. Separately, keep one bowl of water in a porcelain vessel containing Huanglian. Quench the red-hot Luganshi seven times in the water. Then, dry the porcelain vessel in the sun. Grind together with Huanglian into a fine powder. When using, re-grind 1-2 liang to extreme fineness, add Longnao as needed. Use a small amount, mix with well water to a thick paste, and apply with a chopstick tip to the ulcerated area before sleep. If not ulcerated, applying to the inner canthus is best. Do not allow entry into the eyeball.
The above formula uses Luganshi to absorb dampness and remove ulcers as the Sovereign; Huanglian's bitter-cold as Assistant; Longnao to remove heat toxins as Envoy. It can be used for all eye diseases. It treats suitable conditions without harm to unsuitable ones. For diseases of odd meridians receiving pathogens, add Poxiao (Mirabilitum) dissolved in water and drip onto yellow-red lipid on pterygium.
Longnao Huanglian Gao: Treats red vessels in the eyes like fire, with burning heat. Other treatments are the same as above.
Herbs: Huanglian (half jin), Longnao (1 qian).
First, chop Huanglian finely, add three large bowls of water in a porcelain vessel, put in Huanglian, and slowly decoct over gentle and moderate fire until nearly half a bowl remains. Filter out dregs, pour into a thin porcelain bowl, and steam over boiling water to form about half a cup of ointment. Add Longnao (standard 1 qian) as needed when using. Apply to the eye with a chopstick tip at any time.
The above formula uses Huanglian to treat eye pain and resolve various toxins as the Sovereign, and Longnao to remove heat toxins as the Minister. It is suitable for all eye pain patients.
Ruiren Chunxue Gao: Treats redness, photophobia, itching, pain, and sandy grittiness.
Herbs: Ruiren (Pruni Persicae Semen, oil removed, 4 qian), Longnao (5 fen).
First, grind Ruiren finely, mix evenly with Longnao, add 1.2 qian of raw good true honey, grind again to mix evenly. Apply a small amount to the inner canthus with a chopstick tip.
The above formula uses Longnao to remove heat toxins as the Sovereign, raw honey to detoxify and harmonize hundred herbs as the Minister, and Ruiren to remove sudden heat and treat eye pain as the Envoy. This medicine can be used concurrently with Huanglian Luganshi San and Longnao Huanglian Gao.
Bi Yun San (Nasal): Treats swelling and redness, dimness and photophobia, hidden soreness and pain, wind-induced itching and nasal congestion, headache and sourness in the brain, external nebula and pterygium, thick sticky discharge and tears.
Herbs: E Bushicao (Centipedae Herba) (2 qian), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Chuanxiong (each 1 qian).
Grind into fine powder. First, fill mouth with water. Take a rice-grain-sized amount of powder and insufflate into the nose until tears flow. Time is not restricted.
The above formula uses E Bushicao to detoxify as the Sovereign; Qingdai to remove heat as Assistant; Chuanxiong's great acridity to expel evil and break stagnation as Envoy, a rising and penetrating medicine. Generally, it acts like opening a pot lid, keeping pathogenic toxins open and providing an exit. Although the force is small but sharp, it works immediately upon insufflation. It gathers strength and can be used for all eye diseases.
Qianghuo Shengfeng Tang: Treats excessive eye discharge, tight and gritty eyelids, photophobia, red vessels traversing the sclera, headache and nasal congestion, swelling, tearing, heaviness in the vertex, soreness in the brow bone, external nebula resembling clouds, threads, scales, or snail shells.
Herbs: Baizhu (5 fen), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Qianghuo, Chuanxiong, Baizhi, Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Fangfeng, Qianhu, Jiegeng, Bohe (each 4 fen), Jingjie, Gancao (each 3 fen), Chaihu (7 fen), Huangqin (5 fen).
Make one dose, add two zhan of water, decoct to one zhan, filter and take hot.
The above formula is caused by uncontrolled wind-heat. Any obstruction of orifices is a sign of spleen-stomach deficiency. Thus, Baizhu and Zhike regulate stomach qi as the Sovereign; Qianghuo, Chuanxiong, Baizhi, Duhuo, Fangfeng, and Qianhu, all wind-dispelling herbs, act as Ministers focusing on ascending and developing; Jiegeng removes cold and heat, Bohe and Jingjie clear and benefit the upper jiao, and Gancao harmonizes hundred herbs as Assistants; Chaihu resolves heat and moves through Shaoyang and Jueyin meridians, Huangqin treats upper heat and main redness/swelling of eyes as Envoys. It also treats sequelae of Shanghan (Cold Damage). Taking it hot allows the heat nature to rise and scatter upwards, preventing downward flow. For nebulae, add herbs based on the meridian involved. Nebulae emerging from the inner canthus outward involve the Taiyang meridian; add Manjingzi for Taiyang, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) to remove dampness from Small Intestine and Bladder, as the inner canthus belongs to Hand and Foot Taiyang. Nebulae entering obliquely below the Tongziliao point involve Foot Shaoyang, Hand Shaoyang, and Hand Taiyang; use Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) because its bitter taste matches the Gallbladder flavor, add Ren Shen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) slightly to boost Sanjiao Qi, and add Gaoben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma), a Taiyang wind herb. Nebulae descending from the Eye System involve Foot Jueyin and Hand Shaoyin; double Chaihu to move Liver Qi and add Huanglian to drain Heart Fire. Nebulae ascending from Diguo point involve Hand Taiyang; add Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) to guide Small Intestine heat, and Wuzi (Schisandrae Fructus) to astringe.
Xingren Longdancao Pao San: Treats wind attacking upward, redness and itching.
Herbs: Longdancao, Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, tail), Huanglian, Huashi (take powder separately), Xingren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen, peel and tip removed), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) (each 1 qian).
Soak and rinse with white boiling water, temperature as desired, time unrestricted.
Another prescription: Longdancao and Huanglian's bitter-cold remove heat toxins as Sovereign; Dangguiwei moves blood, Xingren moistens dryness as Assistants; Huashi's sweet-cold drains qi, Chishao's bitter-sour removes itching as Envoy. Only usable for wind-induced itching.
Chaihu Fusheng Tang: Treats redness, photophobia, excessive tears with little discharge, heaviness in the vertex, eyeball pain radiating to Taiyang, weak eyelids often wanting to close, inability to gaze for long periods causing soreness, depressed nebulae that are round, square, long, or short, like threads, cones, or chisels.
Herbs: Gaoben, Chuanxiong (each 3.5 fen), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (4 fen), Manjingzi (Viticis Fructus), Qianghuo, Duhuo, Baizhi (each 3.5 fen), Chaihu (6 fen), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, fried), Bohe, Jiegeng (each 4 fen), Wuzi (20 grains), Cangzhu, Fuling (Poria), Huangqin (each 5 fen).
Make one dose, add two zhan of water, decoct to one zhan, filter, take hot after meals.
