Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) is deficient, allowing Cold Evil to invade; Yuan Qi (Source Qi) is weak, damaged by diet. External pathogens exploit the deficiency while internal injury arises from improper diet; external and internal factors combine, gradually brewing into this disease. Parents, believing children possess pure Yang nature, fail to clothe them warmly in deep winter; parents, fearing wind, do not remove clothes from children in midsummer; parents, noting frequent hunger, force-feed after nursing; parents, observing occasional thirst, provide extra water after breastfeeding. Some foolish parents, failing to examine suitability of cold/heat and diet, neither warm the child when cold nor cool them when hot, nor satisfy thirst with drinking or hunger with eating. Children, being young and silent, cannot speak of their illness when afflicted. Thus, external invasion and internal injury accumulate over time, eventually brewing into Gan Syndrome (Chronic Malnutrition Disease). Symptoms include thirst with easy hunger, ability to eat yet emaciation, abdominal distension with diarrhea, borborygmus (rumbling bowel sounds), and if untreated for long, ocular diseases arise. The disease manifests as corneal opacity (nebula), eyelids closed unable to open, discharge like paste, progressing to pus flow and eventual blindness of both eyes. Why? Because Yang Qi sinks downward, and Yin Qi rebels upward. Treatment method: As stated in *Yin Yang Ying Xiang Da Lun* (Great Treatise on Yin and Yang Corresponding to Images): "Clear Yang emerges from the upper orifices, Turbid Yin exits through the lower orifices; Clear Yang disperses through Cou Li (interstices), Turbid Yin travels to the Zang Organs; Clear Yang fills the four limbs, Turbid Yin returns to the Fu Organs." Each returns to its origin, not reversing normalcy; this is the correct treatment. One should prepare decoctions that raise Yang and descend Yin, primarily using Fuling Xie Shi Tang (Poria Decoction to Drain Dampness) or Shengma Longdancao Yinzi (Cimicifuga and Gentian Drink). These medicines are not exclusively for the eyes but treat the aforementioned syndromes collectively. Do not delay; delay leads to danger. Parents must be prudent.
Jun (Monarch) is the main agent, Chen (Minister) is auxiliary, Zuo (Assistant) provides help, Shi (Envoy) serves as guide; this is the origin of formula construction. Against the pathogen implies attacking methods, following the pathogen implies harmonizing methods, contrary methods differ, orthodox methods are suitable; this is the method of treating disease. Necessitating heat or cold, dispersion or consolidation, defines the Monarch's role. Without unblocking there is no clarity, without transmission there is no movement, defining the Minister's assistance. Capable of receiving commands, combining forces, defines the Assistant's help. Striking, stimulating, purging, or opening, defines the Envoy's function. To break Cold, one must use Heat; to drive out Heat, one must use Cold; to remove Dryness, one must moisten; to eliminate Dampness, one must drain; this is "Against" attacking. To treat Jing (Fright/Shock), one must calm; to treat Sun (Damage/Deficiency), one must warm; to treat Liu (Retention), one must consolidate; to treat Jian (Hardness/Induration), one must soften; this is "Following" harmonizing. For Heat diseases using Cold medicines, to guide Cold to attack Heat, the medicine must be taken hot. For example, Yangming disease with fever and hard stool uses Dachengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction), where Jiuhuang (Wine-processed Rhubarb) is taken hot. For Cold diseases using Hot medicines, to guide Heat to remove Cold, the medicine must be taken cold. For example, Shaoyin disease with diarrhea, where Fuzi (Aconite) and Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) fail to stop it, uses Baitong Tang (White Passage Decoction) added with Renao (Human Urine) and Zhudan (Pig Gallbladder Bile). For Obstruction diseases using Unblocking medicines, to guide Unblock to remove Obstruction, Cold medicines are used. For example, chest fullness with fright and difficult urination uses Chaihu Jia Longgu Muli Tang (Bupleurum plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell Decoction). For Unblocking diseases using Blocking medicines, to guide Block to stop Unblocking, Unblocking medicines are used. For example, Taiyang Wind Strike with diarrhea and epigastric hardness uses Shizao Tang (Ten Jujube Decoction). Contrary means different. Treating distant ailments requires large doses, treating nearby ailments requires small doses, treating primary ailments requires gentle action, treating secondary ailments requires urgent action; this is Orthodox Suitability. *Zhi Yao Da Lun* (Great Treatise on Essential Truths) states: "Acrid and Sweet disperse and belong to Yang; Sour and Bitter induce vomiting/drain and belong to Yin; Salty induces vomiting/drain and belongs to Yin; Bland渗泄 (percolates/drains) and belongs to Yang." These six flavors either consolidate or disperse, either moderate or urgent, either drying or moistening, either softening or hardening. Thus, utilize them to regulate Qi and achieve balance. Therefore, thin flavor belongs to Yin within Yang; thin flavor promotes unblocking, such as Sour, Bitter, Salty, and Neutral tastes. Dense aroma belongs to Yang within Yang; dense aroma generates heat, such as Acrid, Sweet, Hot, and Damp aromas. Thin aroma belongs to Yang within Yin; thin aroma promotes excretion, such as Acrid, Sweet, Bland, Neutral, Cold, and Cool aromas. Dense flavor belongs to Yin within Yin; dense flavor promotes drainage, such as Sour, Bitter, Salty, and Cold flavors. The *I Ching* (Book of Changes) states: "Same sounds resonate, same energies seek each other. Water flows to wetness, Fire goes to dryness, Clouds follow Dragons, Winds follow Tigers. When Sages arise, all things are seen; those rooted in Heaven亲 (attach to) above, those rooted in Earth attach below; thus each follows its kind." Therefore, constructing formulas to treat diseases is as follows.
