Sl Bo Ren treated a patient who vomited blood so profusely that it filled a basin, lasting for two years. The patient had a history of laborious work, leading to damage of Middle Qi (Spleen and Stomach Qi). Initially administered Ba Bao San (Eight-Treasure Powder); after one to two days, Huang Qin Shao Yao Tang (Scutellaria and Peony Decoction) was given. With slight movement, Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) plus Tao Ren (Peach Kernel) and Da Huang (Rhubarb) were advanced. When slightly relieved, Ning Shen San (Spirit-Calming Powder) was taken; if phlegm was present, Meng Shi Wan (Magnesite Pill) was used. The pulse was initially Kou Da (Hollow and Large), gradually becoming level. The patient recovered in three months, with repeated successful outcomes.
Another patient suffered severe heatstroke with heavy hematemesis, chest pain upon pressure, fever, and dizziness. The pulse was Hong Hua Er Hua (Surging, Large, and Slippery). Sl Bo Ren stated: "This must be due to heavy drinking followed by exposure to summer-heat, causing blood stagnation forced upward by the heat." Initially administered Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang, followed by Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang (Peach Kernel and Magnolia Bark Decoction). After removing blood stasis, the summer-heat was treated, resulting in recovery.
Weng of Cangzhou treated a Censor who fell ill during a journey. Upon inspecting the complexion and palpating the pulse, the face showed Dai Yang (floating yang/false heat), and the Qi Kou (Radial Artery at the wrist) pulse was Xian (Wiry). This was identified as Tai Yang disease combined with other pathogens. Having crossed the sea, the patient was frightened by wind and waves, leading to blood depression and spirit constriction. Combining with heat, this caused hematemesis, hypochondriac pain, irritability, thirst, and delirium. Another physician diagnosed the absence of the Left Chi (Kidney) pulse, concluding that Kidney Qi was exhausted. The patient wept and informed his attendants, fearing greatly. Weng said: "In the current year's annual cycle, the Left Chi pulse is expected to be absent; this is a Tian He Mai (Natural Harmony Pulse), no need to worry." A half dose of Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with Ren Shen removed and Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root) added was given. Once Stomach Qi was solidified, Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang was used to purge, leading to relief upon bowel movement.
Zhu Danxi treated a patient with cough and hemoptysis using Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb), Gua Lou (Trichosanthes Fruit), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry), Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry Root Bark), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Dong Hua Hua (Kolkwitzia Flower), and Shi Shuang (Persimmon Frost). Another patient, aged fifty, suffered from chronic cough and hemoptysis due to overwork. The prescription included Ren Shen, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria), Bai He, Bai Shao Yao (White Peony Root), Hong Hua (Safflower), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Sang Bai Pi, Xing Ren, Gan Cao (Licorice Root), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), He Zi (Chebulic Myrobalan), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis), Gua Lou, Hai Fen (Sea Flour/Starch), Wu Wei Zi, and Tian Men Dong (Asparagus Root). A third patient, aged thirty, with cough and hemoptysis, was treated with Si Wu Tang, Sheng Di Huang, Sang Bai Pi, Xing Ren, Dong Hua Hua, Wu Wei Zi, Tian Men Dong, Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Bei Mu, and Huang Qin.
