Huangqin (1 qian, used to treat lung heat in the chest of the Taiyang channel) Shengdihuang (1 qian, used to treat heart heat within the Shaoyin channel)
Xixin (3 fen, used to treat severe headache caused by the Shaoyin Kidney channel) Gancao (3 fen, relieves internal urgency and harmonizes various herbs)
The above herbs are chopped into pieces as one dose. Add fresh ginger and scallion white, decoct with water. Take hot when inducing sweating; take warm when stopping sweating. If there is fullness and stuffiness in the chest, add Zhike and Jiegeng, remove Dihuang. In summer, add Shigao and Zhimu, named Shenzhu Tang. Add these also if there is thirst. If still no sweat, add Zisu. For asthma, add Xingren and Jiegeng. If the disease persists after sweating, employ both sweating and purging methods, add Dahuang; this is the "drawing fire from under the cauldron" method. To stop sweating, remove Cangzhu, add Baizhu. If it still does not stop, add Huangqi, Guizhi, and Shaoyao to immediately stop sweating.
Mahuang Tang [Commentary] (Note: This formula treats non-sweating conditions of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder channel, a pungent-warm exterior-releasing agent.)
Treats true cold damage in winter, with symptoms of headache, fever, aversion to cold, stiffness of the waist, spine, and neck, soreness and pain throughout the body joints, floating and tight pulse without sweat. This indicates pathogenic invasion of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder channel, constituting an exterior excess syndrome, requiring release of the exterior to dispel pathogens. If the headache feels like being split by an axe and the body burns like fire, this formula is appropriate.
Mahuang (remove nodes, 2 qian) Guizhi (1.3 qian) Xingren (14 seeds) Gancao (6 fen)
Chop the above herbs as one dose. Add three slices of fresh ginger, three stalks of scallion white, and a pinch of Douchi. Decoct with water and take hot. Cover with blankets to induce sweating. If still no sweat, add Moxiang (0.5 fen), causing sweat to pour like rain. If taken for two or three doses without sweating, death may ensue.
Guizhi Tang [Commentary] (Note: This formula treats sweating conditions of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder channel, a pungent-warm exterior-firming agent.)
Treats true wind strike in winter, with symptoms of fever, headache, aversion to wind, stiffness of the waist, spine, and neck, pain in all limbs and joints, floating and slow pulse with spontaneous sweating. This indicates pathogenic invasion of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder channel, constituting an exterior deficiency syndrome, requiring firming of the exterior to dispel pathogens. This formula should not be used if there is no sweat.
Guizhi (2.5 qian) Shaoyao (2.5 qian) Gancao (1 qian)
Chop the above herbs as one dose. Add three slices of fresh ginger and two jujubes. Decoct with water and take warm. If sweating does not stop, add Huangqi.
Gegen Jieji Tang [Commentary] (Note: This formula treats the Foot-Yangming Stomach channel, an exterior-relaxing agent.)
Treats symptoms of the Foot-Yangming Stomach channel: eye pain, dry nose, insomnia, mild headache, slightly surging pulse. Exterior relaxation is indicated; this belongs to Yangming channel disease. True Yangming fu-organ disease has separate treatment methods.
Gegen Chaihu Huangqin Shaoyao Qianghuo Baizhi Jiegeng Gancao
Chop the above herbs. Take 1 liang per dose. Add three slices of fresh ginger, one jujube, and a pinch of Shigao powder. Decoct with water and take hot.
If there is no sweat and aversion to cold, remove Huangqin and add Mahuang.
Xiaochaihu Tang [Commentary] (Note: This formula treats the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder channel, a harmonizing agent.)
Treats symptoms of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder channel: deafness, hypochondriac pain, alternating chills and fever, vomiting, bitter taste in mouth, wiry and rapid pulse. This belongs to half-exterior half-interior syndrome, requiring harmonization. There are three prohibitions for this Gallbladder channel disease: do not use sweating, purging, or diuresis.
Chaihu Huangqin Banxia Renshen Gancao
Chop the above herbs. Take 1 liang per dose. Add three slices of fresh ginger and two jujubes. Decoct with water and take. If urination is difficult, add Fuling. For vomiting, add Chenpi, Zhuru, and Jiangzhi. For hypochondriac pain, add Qingpi. For left-sided pain, add Zhike, Chishaoyao, Muli, and Sangbaipi; for right-sided pain, add Zhishi and Jianghuang. For excessive phlegm, add Gualouren and Beimu. For chills and fever resembling malaria, add Guizhi. For thirst, add Zhimu and Tianhuafen. For dry teeth without saliva, add Shigao. For cough, add Wuweizi and Feicao. For fullness and stuffiness, add Zhike and Jiegeng. For deficiency vexation resembling cold damage, add Zhuye and fried Jingmi. For combined disease of this channel and Yangming, add Gegen and Shaoyao. For heat entering the blood chamber, add Shengdihuang for men, and Danggui and Honghua for women. For complicated cases, add Biejia. If there is abdominal pain and aversion to cold, add Shaoyao and Guizhi, remove Huangqin. For epigastric fullness and stuffiness, add Huanglian and Zhishi. If internal heat is severe with delirious speech and vexation preventing sleep, combine with Huanglian Jiedu Tang. If the pulse is wiry and rapid with no exterior signs, but severe internal heat, aversion to heat, vexation, and thirst for water, combine with Baihu Tang. If there is fever, vexation, and thirst, with a floating, wiry, and rapid pulse, difficulty urinating, and diarrhea, add Siling San. If internal heat is predominant, termed "cooperating heat," add fried Huanglian and Baishao. If the pulse is wiry and deficient, with fever and thirst but no desire to drink, remove Renshen, add Maidong (1.5 qian) and Wuweizi (10 grains). If the pulse is wiry and deficient, with fever and thirst but no desire to drink, remove Renshen, add Maidong (1.5 qian) and Wuweizi (10 grains). If the pulse is wiry and deficient with fever, or both Chi pulses are floating and weak, this must be due to sexual activity, seminal emission, or insecurity of essence during illness. Add Huangbai and Zhimu (each 2 qian, wine-fried) and Muli (2 qian), named Ziyin Qingre Yin. If the pulse is wiry and deficient, with fever and dry mouth, or loose stools, weak stomach, and poor appetite, add Baizhu, Fuling, and Baishao (each 1.5 qian). For blood deficiency fever, worse at night, add Siwu Tang (each 1 qian). For dry mouth and tongue with insufficient fluids, remove Banxia, add Tianhuafen and Maidong (each 1.5 qian) and Wuweizi (15 grains).
Guizhi Dahuang Tang [Commentary] (Note: This formula treats abdominal pain of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen channel.)
Treats symptoms of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen channel: abdominal fullness and pain, warm hands and feet, deep and forceful pulse. This occurs because pathogenic heat transmits from yang channels to yin channels.
Guizhi Shaoyao Gancao Dahuang Chaihu Zhishi
Chop the above herbs. Add three slices of fresh ginger and two jujubes. Before taking, mix with 3 spoons of Binglang water ground fresh.
Dachaihu Tang [Commentary] (Note: This formula releases the exterior and attacks the interior.)
Treats cold damage where exterior signs remain while interior signs become urgent, internal excess with difficulty defecating, body heat without aversion to cold but with aversion to heat. Use this medicine to regulate both exterior and interior.
Chaihu (3 qian) Huangqin (2.5 qian) Banxia (2 qian) Dahuang (2 qian) Shaoyao (1.5 qian) Zhishi (1.5 qian)
Chop the above herbs as one dose. Add three slices of fresh ginger and two jujubes. Decoct with water and take warm. Stop when stool becomes loose. If not loose, administer again.
Huanglian Jiedu Tang [Commentary] (Note: This formula greatly resolves exterior and interior, acting as a cooling agent.)
Treats persistent high fever in cold damage, vexation, thirst, dry retching, asthma, and chest fullness, deep yang reversal, severe internal accumulated heat, and heat remaining after sweating, vomiting, or purging treatments.
Huanglian Huangqin Huangbai Zhizi (each 2 qian) Add Chaihu and Lianqiao (each 1.5 qian)
Chop the above herbs as one dose. Decoct with water and take.
Liuyi Shunqi Tang
Treats cold damage where heat pathogen transmits to the interior, resulting in hard stool, dry mouth and throat, aversion to heat, delirium, restless behavior (pulling clothes, throwing limbs), yellow spots, yang reversal, tidal fever, spontaneous sweating, chest and abdominal fullness and hardness, and periumbilical pain. It can replace Shenxiao medicines such as Da/Minor Chengqi Tang, Wei Chengqi Tang, Sanyi Chengqi Tang, Dachaihu Tang, and Daxiexiong Tang.
Chaihu Huangqin Shaoyao Zhishi Houpo Dahuang Mangxiao Gancao
Chop the above herbs as one dose. Boil two bowls of water three times, then add herbs and decoct until eight parts remain. Before taking, add two or three spoons of iron rust water. If there is tidal fever, spontaneous sweating, delirium, thirst, restlessness, pulling clothes, yellow spots, and hard stool, provided it is a true Yangming fu syndrome, follow this formula. If there is dry mouth/throat and hard stool, belonging to Shaoyin, follow this formula. If there is diarrhea of pure clear water with hard/painful epigastrium, belonging to Shaoyin, follow this formula. If there is aversion to heat, thirst, delirium, alternating cold/warm hands and feet, and hard stool, belonging to Jueyin, follow this formula. If the tongue is curled and the scrotum retracted, it is difficult to treat; urgent purging is required, following this formula. If there is delirium, thirst, hard stool, and periumbilical hardness/pain indicating dry feces, follow this formula. If eyes are unclear in heat disease, indicating exhaustion of divine water and inability to see objects, the disease is critical; urgent purging is required, following this formula. For Xiexiong syndrome with hard/painful epigastrium, tenderness to touch, dry thirst, delirium, and hard stool, follow this formula, remove Gancao, add Jiegeng and Gansui. For cold damage past its stage, or in elderly/weak persons with dual deficiency of qi and blood, or postpartum patients with purging indications, or those where purging failed to resolve the disease, or where exterior signs remain but interior signs are urgent necessitating purging, remove Mangxiao.
Mi Jian Dao Fa
Treats spontaneous sweating, constipation, and in elderly/weak persons with long-standing hard stool who cannot tolerate harsh purgatives. Refine honey until syrupy, shape while hot into finger-sized sticks about 2 cun long, pointed at both ends, insert into the anus. After some time, hard stool will pass. Adding a little Zaojiao powder enhances efficacy. If honey is unavailable, sesame oil can be substituted with good effect.
Zhu Dan Zhi Dao Fa [Commentary] (Note: This formula treats interior/exterior excess heat, acting as a purgative.)
Treats Yangming spontaneous sweating, free urination, hard stool, where purging is contraindicated. Take one pig gallbladder, mix with a little vinegar, insert into the anus using a bamboo tube. Passage occurs after about one hour.
Taoren Chengqi Tang [Commentary] (Note: This formula treats mania and bloody stool.)
Treats heat pathogen transmitting to the interior, heat accumulating in the bladder. The patient appears manic, urine flows freely, stool is black, lower abdomen is full and painful, body and eyes are yellow, with delirious speech and dry thirst. This is Blood Accumulation Syndrome. With a deep and forceful pulse, use this formula to purge black material for cure. If blood passes spontaneously before taking the medicine, it indicates impending recovery; no need to take the medicine.
Taoren (10 seeds, peeled) Guizhi (1.5 qian) Dahuang (3 qian) Mangxiao (1.5 qian) Gancao (1 qian)
Chop the above herbs as one dose. Add three slices of fresh ginger. Decoct with water, strain, add Mangxiao, boil once or twice more, and take warm. Continue until blood is exhausted.

Zhimu Shigao Gancao Jingmi
Chop the above herbs as one dose. Decoct with water until rice is cooked, strain, and take warm. If there is dry mouth, vexation, and thirst, or red spots appear, follow this formula adding Renshen, named Huaban Tang. If contracting heat epidemic in autumn, or after Yangming purging with unconsolidated stool and persistent heat, or in damp-warmth with persistent heat and loose stool, follow this formula adding Cangzhu and Renshen; one dose works miraculously. If there is no sweat, floating pulse, unresolved exterior, and abundant yin qi, even with thirst, Baihu Tang is contraindicated. It is only usable after sweating when the pulse is surging and thirsty, indicating internal heat.
Sanhuang Shigao Tang
Treats Yangdu (Yang toxin) with spots and jaundice, body red as vermilion, eyes fiery, screaming and running away, six pulses surging and large, extreme dry thirst, dry/red nose, dry teeth, prolonged course unresolved, becoming a complicated case. Interior and exterior both hot. Attempted sweating failed to reduce heat; subsequent purging led to frequent stools and difficult urination. Also results from misdiagnosed warm diseases. Or after sweating, intense heat in the Triple Burner, surging pulse, continuous delirium, day and night panting, occasional nosebleeds, screaming and running away.

Eyes are red, lips are scorched. Swallows water if given, refuses if not. Appearance resembles drunkenness. Ordinary doctors do not recognize this, calling it a death sign, leading to many errors with acupuncture. Unknowingly, this is heat pathogen transmitting to the Shaoyin Heart channel. Fire of the Heart flares up and forces the Lung, causing coma. Named Yuejing Syndrome.

Xiaoban Qingdai Yin [Commentary] (Note: This formula treats spotting/rash.)
Treats heat pathogen transmitting to the interior, whether exterior excess or deficiency. Blood heat does not dissipate; heat qi exploits deficiency to emerge on skin as spots. Mild cases resemble rashes; severe cases resemble brocade patterns; very severe cases cause skin ulceration. Caused by treating yang syndromes with hot medicines, failing to sweat when needed, failing to purge when needed, or failure to resolve after sweating/purging. Do not induce sweating again, as this will worsen ulceration. If there is spontaneous diarrhea, oppression, shortness of breath, hard stool, and black spots, it is untreatable. If unresolved after sweating/purging, with cold feet, deafness, vexation, cough, vomiting, and surging pulse at the Guan position, this indicates spotting.
