Fe Boyuan, serving as a Branch Commissioner, suffered from irritability and insomnia. The physician observed his white tongue coating and administered warming medicines, which led to delirium and convulsions; multiple treatments proved ineffective. Meng Ying examined him and found the left pulse wiry, fine, and rapid, while the right pulse was soft and slippery. He diagnosed this as a Yin-deficient constitution with blazing Heart Fire, stirring Liver Wind, and abundant Phlegm obstructing the Middle Jiao. Initially, he prescribed Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Mulberry Leaf (Sangye), and Chrysanthemum Flower (Juhua) to extinguish the wind; Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen), Moutan Bark (Danpi), Lotus Plumule (Lianxin), and Child’s Urine (Tongsui) to clear the fire; Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru), Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu), and Xue Geng Decoction (Snow Soup, composed of Manxman Jellyfish and Water Chestnut) to resolve the phlegm. After two doses, the patient stabilized. Subsequently, he prescribed Sanjia Powder (Three Shells), Erzhi Pill (Two Solstices), and Cizhu Wan (Magnetite Pill) to submerge floating Yang; Licorice Root (Gancao), Wheat (Xiaomai), and Jujube (Dazao) to relieve urgency; Rehmannia Root (Dihuang) and Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong) to nourish Yin. The patient gradually recovered.
Shao Zhuyu, serving as a Remonstrator, had normal daily routines and diet, but could only sleep on his side and found supine sleeping difficult. Upon waking in a supine position, he felt fine. However, closing his eyes briefly caused him to startle and wake up; even switching back to side-sleeping did not allow him to sleep through the night. This condition persisted for years without cure. Meng Ying prescribed Santang Tang (Three Talents Decoction) combined with Zhenzhong Dan (Pillow Center Pill), adding Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian) and Cinnamon Bark (Rougui) — effectively utilizing the principle of Jiaotai Wan (Interacting Pills). The effect was excellent.
A young man suddenly developed nocturnal emissions. After several days, his flesh and muscles wasted away significantly. Continuous administration of Yin-nourishing and astringent herbs for seminal loss proved as effective as pouring water on stone. Meng Ying prescribed Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) added with Korean Ginseng (Gaolishen), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Dragon Bone (Longgu), and Oyster Shell (Muli). The effect was immediate upon ingestion, and he recovered within a month.
Tu Mou suffered from dream-impregnation that resisted long-term treatment. He had purulent discharge from the ears, difficulty opening his eyes due to tearing, soreness and pain in the shoulders, hypochondrium, chest, and back, slight aversion to cold and fever, reduced appetite, and mental fatigue. Meng Ying palpated the pulse: wiry and rapid on the left, deficient and soft on the right. He prescribed Santang Tang combined with Fengsui Dan (Seal the Marrow Pill), added with Dragon Bone (Longgu), Oyster Shell (Muli), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Moutan Bark (Danpi), Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhi), and Chrysanthemum Flower (Juhua). He recovered within ten days.
Li Mou, in the winter of the Wu year, returned home drunk at night and was frightened by night-watch personnel. His consciousness gradually became clouded; treatments were ineffective. Eventually, he failed to distinguish between relatives and strangers, stripped naked, laughed and cursed, possessed uncontrollable strength, and was unaware of defecating or soiling himself. In the summer of the Ji year, he invited Meng Ying to treat him. The prescription included Acorus Rhizome (Shichangpu), Polygala Root (Yuanzhi), Dragon Teeth (Longchi), Turtle Shell (Guiban), Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen), Salvia Root (Danshen), Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi), Gentian Root (Longdancao), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Pinellia Paste (Zhuhu), Bamboo Juice (Zhulü), Gypsum (Shigao), Hematite (Zhesi), Black Lead (Heiqian), and Iron Filings (Tielluo), adjusted according to symptoms. After more than ten doses, copious sticky phlegm was vomited and purged. Subsequently, Cizhu Wan (Magnetite Pill) was given, and the condition gradually improved.
Elder Li, over seventy years old, desired to take a concubine. Although he expressed this desire, his descendants refused due to his advanced age and blindness. Consequently, he gradually developed madness and confusion. All physicians attributed this to deficiency of Spirit and Mind, administering extensive warming and tonifying drugs, which exacerbated the condition. When Meng Ying finally examined him, the pulse was strong and pounding against the fingers, the face was red, he did not speak, saliva flowed involuntarily, and his strength was uncontrollable. Meng Ying stated: “This is due to excessive innate endowment and hyperactive Yang. Regardless of the pulse and signs, the onset itself reveals the nature of the disease. If it were decline of Mingmen Fire (Gate of Life Fire), he would have long been listless and weak; how could he harbor such desires? Physicians see an old person and immediately suspect deficiency.”
It must be known that those whose foundation is not solid cannot enjoy longevity. Since he enjoyed a long life, his congenital essence must have been abundant. Moreover, after age fifty, Yin declines first. As Xu Lingtai said: “Millennium-old trees often burn themselves,” illustrating that when Yin is exhausted, Fire flares up—a universal law. Last winter, I treated Shao Keting for rebellious Qi wheezing due to solitary Yang. Besides nourishing Water and clearing Fire, I administered Tian Sheng Gan Lu Yin (Natural Sweet Dew Drink, i.e., Northern Pear Juice) totaling over 200 jin. The illness had gradually subsided. However, mistakenly consuming just two bowls of Ginger Decoction ruined all previous efforts. This demonstrates that Yin is hard to replenish, while Fire easily spreads like a prairie fire. He had already taken Cinnamon Bark (Rougui), Prepared Aconite (Fupian), Curculigo Rhizome (Xianmao), Deer Antler (Lurong), Ginseng (Renshen), Morinda Root (Bajitian), and Placenta (Ziheche) for a long time. What substance could now generate depleted Water and harmonize extreme Yang? Ultimately, he died.
Jiang Mou, in his thirties, suddenly developed red eyes and swollen, painful gums, progressing to delirium, running about cursing, and disrespecting elders. His father, panicked, sought Meng Ying’s consultation. The pulse was large and rapid, but empty and scattered upon deep pressure. The prescription consisted of Japanese Ginseng (Dongyangshen), Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudihuang), Cinnabar (Chensha), Magnetite (Cishi), Dragon Teeth (Longchi), Acorus Rhizome (Changpu), Jujube Seed (Zaoren), Amber (Hupo), Cinnamon Bark (Rougui), Gold Leaf (Jinbo), and Longan Aril (Longyanrou). One dose brought immediate calm; by the next day, he was able to teach students.
The daughter-in-law of Wang Yuechu, during the temple viewing ceremony (ancient wedding ritual), suddenly looked deviated to the left, raised her hands and spoke nonsensically, alarming her relatives. Inquiry revealed she had no history of such symptoms. Meng Ying was summoned urgently. The pulse was wiry, slippery, and slightly rapid; the tongue coating was yellow, and there was epigastric stuffiness. Although it was late spring, the weather was intensely hot. Combined with labor-induced rising of Fire and her inherent Phlegm, this condition arose. He prescribed Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi), Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen), Salvia Root (Danshen), Mint (Bohe), and Trichosanthes Root (Huafen), administered with Mengshi Gutan Wan (Magnesium Chloride Phlegm-Rolling Pill). After three doses, Phlegm was expelled, and clarity of mind returned. Treatment was then changed to clearing and nourishing methods, leading to full recovery. She gave birth to a child the following year.
Da Yong, a descendant of Zhu Yangxin, after his new marriage, became mentally dull, stared blankly, and lost coherence in speech. Suspecting physical weakness and timid spirit, others administered sedative and tonifying安神 (calming Spirit) herbs. This gradually worsened into polyphagia, irritability, and狂躁 (mad-like) cursing. His clan brother, Yi Sheng, invited Meng Ying to diagnose. The right pulse was surging and slippery. The prescription included Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Gypsum (Shigao), Acorus Rhizome (Shichangpu), Pinellia with Bile (Danning), Bamboo Juice (Zhulü), and Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), along with swallowing Mengshi Gutan Wan (Magnesium Chloride Phlegm-Rolling Pill). He recovered.
