Commentary: The symptom of coughing and expectorating pus and blood is caused by the lung contracting cold pathogenic qi. Coughing damages the yang meridians; the Heart governs blood, and the Lung governs qi; blood flows following the movement of qi. When qi rebels upward, it causes coughing accompanied by bleeding. Cold pathogenic factors stagnate and transform into heat, interacting with the body fluids in the lung, leading to coagulation, stagnation, and accumulation, thereby forming pus. Consequently, pus and blood are expectorated during coughing.
Treatment for conditions where external and internal pathogens combine due to lung cold, manifesting as cough, hoarseness or loss of voice, a sensation of frost and snow in the mouth, retention of fluid and cold phlegm, throat obstruction feeling like a plum pit, dysphagia, and diaphragmatic qi or epigastric fullness. This formula is effective for all such conditions. It is the Xiangfu Wan (Mutual Lubrication Pill) formula:
