Discourse states: The causes of amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) are diverse. Some cases involve qi failing to transform blood, resulting in slight obstruction; some involve excessive flow prior to the expected time followed by cessation later; some occur due to heat and dryness after a major illness; some result from cold coagulation and stagnation; some are caused by accumulation and qi knotting; and some stem from depression and stagnation of heart qi. Since the etiologies differ, the treatments must also vary. Generally, women take blood as their foundation and qi as their function. When qi and blood remain stagnant, they become涩 (astringent/stagnant) and fail to flow. The manifestations of this disease may be cold or hot, with hardness and pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, emaciation of muscles, and if prolonged, it evolves into symptoms of Lao Zhai (consumptive disease).
