Commentary states: The *Neijing* (Inner Canon) mentions that the southern regions are low-lying, with weak water and soil conditions, and are places where fog and dew gather. The Jiangdong and Lingnan areas are generally like this. During the transition between spring and summer, heat and moisture from mountains and rivers steam and stagnate, making wind-dampness toxic gases very severe. If the feet are affected by these pathogens, it leads to "Zhangdu Hong Kong Foot" (a lower limb disease caused by damp-heat and toxic pathogens). The symptoms present as initial weakness and difficulty in flexing the feet, gradually progressing to numbness and pain, slight swelling of the knees and shins, insensitivity or numbness in the lower abdomen, headache, irritability, phlegm obstruction, vomiting and regurgitation, alternating chills and fever, and obstruction of urination and defecation. In severe cases, the pathogen attacks the heart, creating a critical situation; treatment must indeed not be delayed. Zhi Fazcun paid attention to classical prescriptions and excelled in this technique, was it not because this disease was prevalent in the Jiangzuo and Lingnan regions?
For treating Hong Kong Foot in the Jiangdong region, where slight movement causes chest stuffiness, soreness and pain in the calves, and incessant irritability and heat, use the Xijiao Tang (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction):
Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn, sliced) 1 liang, Muxiang (Costus Root) 1 liang, Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, de-radicle) 1 liang, Qingzhuru (Green Bamboo Shavings) 3 fen, Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, de-core) 1.5 liang, Dafu (Arecae Pericarpium, 3 pieces, chopped with peel).
The above six herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take 5 qianbi per dose, decoct in 1.5 zhan of water until 1 zhan remains, strain, and take at any time.
For treating the onset of Hong Kong Foot in the Jiangdong region, characterized by vertigo, expectoration of phlegm, chest stuffiness, qi stagnation, nausea upon seeing food, and tightness/pain in the epigastrium, use the Xuanfuhua Tang (Inula Flower Decoction):
Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos) 1 liang, Chi Fuling (Poria Cocos with Black Skin Removed), Sangbaipipi (Mori Cortex), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, soaked in water seven times to remove slipperiness), Zisujing (Perillae Caulis), each 2 liang.
The above six herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take 5 qianbi per dose, decoct with 1.5 zhan of water and 2 halved Jujubae Fructus until 1 zhan remains, strain, add 1 he of Shengjiangzhi (Ginger Juice), and take on an empty stomach. To promote purgation, add 2 qianbi of Binglangmo (Arecae Semen Pulverized) after the decoction is ready.
For treating Hong Kong Foot already developed in the Jiangdong region, complicated by chronic cold qi rushing upward causing heart vexation and pain, constipation, abdominal distension like a drum, and gradual mental confusion, use the Wuzhuyu Tang (Evodiae Fructus Decoction):
Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, soaked in water, roasted) 1 liang 1 fen, Muxiang (Costus Root) 2 liang, Nongpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, bark removed, stir-fried with ginger juice) 2 liang, Dafu (Arecae Pericarpium, chopped with peel) 5 pieces, Qianniuzi (Semen Koelpiniae) [quantity implied in method].
Except for Qianniuzi, the above five herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take 3 qianbi per dose, decoct with 1.5 zhan of water and 1 fen of smashed Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) until 0.7 zhan remains, strain, add 1 qianbi of Qianniuzimo (Semen Koelpiniae Pulverized), mix well, and take on an empty stomach. Stop when urination and defecation become unobstructed.
For treating severe onset of Hong Kong Foot in the Jiangdong region, characterized by bilateral foot edema, red and scanty urine, chest and abdominal fullness, shortness of breath preventing sitting or lying down, use the Fuling Tang (Poria Decoction):
Chi Fuling (Poria Cocos with Skin Removed), Sangbaipipi (Mori Cortex, chopped), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Muxiang (Costus Root), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, de-black heart), Yuliren (Pruni Semen), each 3 liang. [Note: Text lists eight items but quantities may vary].
The above eight herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take 5 qianbi per dose, decoct with 1.5 zhan of water and 1 fen of smashed Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) until 0.7 zhan remains, strain, and take before morning and evening meals.
For treating severe onset of Hong Kong Foot in the Jiangdong region, where pathogens rush upward affecting the spleen and stomach, causing chest and diaphragm stuffiness, ineffective belching, irritability, dry mouth, blurred vision, and inability to recognize people, use the Lingyangjiao Tang (Saiga Antelope Horn Decoction):
Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, sliced) 1.5 liang, Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn, sliced) 1.5 liang, Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 1 liang, Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos) 1 liang, Muxiang (Costus Root) 1 liang, Dafu (Arecae Pericarpium, 5 pieces, chopped with peel).
The above nine herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take 5 qianbi per dose, decoct in 1.5 zhan of water until 1 zhan remains, strain, and take on an empty stomach. Stop when bowel movements are smooth.
After taking the previous Lingyangjiao Tang, if loose stools occur but slight heat remains, qi rebels causing vomiting, inability to eat, phlegm in the chest and diaphragm, and a constant feeling of emptiness in the abdomen, use the Dafu Tang (Arecae Pericarpium Decoction):
Dafu (Arecae Pericarpium, 7 pieces, chopped with peel) 2 liang, Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn, sliced) 2 liang, Muxiang (Costus Root) 2 liang, Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, de-radicle) 1.5 liang, Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos) 1 liang.
The above seven herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take 5 qianbi per dose, decoct with 1.5 zhan of water and 1 fen of smashed Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) until 0.7 zhan remains, strain, and take on an empty stomach, twice daily.
After taking the previous two formulas, if qi subsides but lingering heat persists, causing unrelenting dry thirst, residual chest stuffiness, and foot pain, use the Shengma Tang (Cimicifuga Decoction):
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 2 liang, Bai Fuling (Poria Cocos with Black Skin Removed) 2 liang, Qingzhuru (Green Bamboo Shavings) 1 liang, Muxiang (Costus Root) 1 liang 1 fen, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, de-black heart) 1.5 liang.
The above eight herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take 5 qianbi per dose, decoct with 1.5 zhan of water, 1 fen of smashed Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and 2 halved Jujubae Fructus until 0.8 zhan remains, strain, and take warm, twice daily.
For treating Hong Kong Foot onset in Jiangdong during spring and summer due to steaming damp-heat and toxic attack, presenting with soreness and pain in both feet, floating heat and swelling, scorched skin and hair, inability to stand for long periods due to foot pain, tendon spasms and cramps, sudden chest oppression, phlegm accumulation in the chest and diaphragm, nausea, four-limb numbness, insensitivity of the ten fingers, abdominal distension, qi obstruction, vertigo, dizziness, and blurred vision, use the Fuling Tang (Poria Decoction):
Bai Fuling (Poria Cocos with Black Skin Removed) 3 liang, Yiyiren (Coicis Semen, stir-fried) 4 liang, Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 2.5 liang, Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, de-radicle) 2.5 liang, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, de-tips) 2.5 liang, Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, wine-soaked, cut, roasted), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Wujiaopi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Zhike (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, pulp removed, bran-roasted), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), each 3 liang; Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, de-root and joint) 4 liang; Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, sliced) 2 liang; Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, bark removed) 1.5 liang; Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, ground to powder) 10 liang.
Excluding Shigao, the above fifteen herbs are chopped to the size of small beans. Take 5 qianbi per dose, soak in 1.5 zhan of water overnight, decoct next morning until 0.8 zhan remains, strain, and take warm on an empty stomach, twice daily. This internally resolves the disease without inducing vomiting or purging. If there is chest/abdominal qi distension, add 1 piece of Dafu with peel; for deficiency heat in chest/heart, add Maimendong (de-core) 1 fen; for lower abdominal pain, add Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) and Huangqin (each 1 liang); for phlegm in chest/heart, add Xuanfuhua 1 fen; for lung qi cough, add Xingren (Pruni Semen, skin and tip removed, 14 pieces) and Sangbaipipi 1 fen; for frequent urination, add Duzhongmo (Eucommiae Cortex Pulverized) 1 fen; for slurred speech, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 1 qian; for astringent urination, add Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) 1 fen; for kidney deficiency deafness, add Cishi (Magnetitum Pulverized) 1 qianbi; for insomnia, add Suanzaorenmo (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen Pulverized) 1 qian; for incessant irritability and heat, add Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus) 1 fen.
For treating early-stage Hong Kong Foot in Jiangdong where the syndrome is unrecognized, starting with soreness and heaviness in the calves, aversion to head, dizziness, vomiting, stabbing pain in the abdomen, chest congestion, intermittent severe chills and high fever resembling malaria—all manifestations of Hong Kong Foot—use the Banxia Tang (Pinellia Decoction):
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed in water to remove slipperiness, processed with ginger juice), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, de-black heart), each 2 liang; Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos) 3 fen; Chi Fuling (Poria Cocos with Black Skin Removed); Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, de-core); Sangbaipipi (Mori Cortex), each 2 liang; Dafu (Arecae Pericarpium, chopped with peel) 5 pieces.
The above seven herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take 5 qianbi per dose, decoct with 1.5 zhan of water, 2 halved Jujubae Fructus, and 1 fen of smashed Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) until 0.7 zhan remains, strain, and take on an empty stomach.
For treating those newly residing in Jiangling who have not yet acclimatized to the local water and soil, suffer from unsuitable diet, and develop Hong Kong Foot due to low-lying dampness, presenting with recurrent chest stuffiness, edema of face/eyes/feet/knees, fatigue, cyanosis of lips/mouth, chest/diaphragm irritability, vomiting upon seeing food, chest/abdominal pain, and aggregation of cold qi—if such symptoms appear, urgently take Xuanfuhua Yin (Inula Flower Drink):
[Herb list incomplete in source text, method implies eight herbs].
To promote purgation, separately add 2 qianbi of Binglangmo (Arecae Semen Pulverized) and take.
Hong Kong Foot originates in Lingnan and spreads to Jiangdong, caused by spleen dampness. Symptoms include mild pain and numbness, swelling of both shins, weakness in walking/rising, numbness spreading to the abdomen, or alternating cold and heat. If one feels these signs, accompanied by vomiting, inability to eat, and rebellious qi, urgently take Xijiao Tang (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction):
Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn, sliced) 1 liang, Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos) 1 liang, Chenjuapi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white pith removed, stir-fried), Chi Fuling (Poria Cocos with Black Skin Removed), each 1.5 liang; Zisujingye (Perillae Caulis and Folium, chopped, half a handful).
The above five herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take 5 qianbi per dose, decoct with 1.5 zhan of water, 0.5 fen of smashed Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), 1 he of Chidou (Sojae Semen Preparatum), and 2 halved Jujubae Fructus until 0.7 zhan remains, strain, and take warm on an empty stomach. Stop when qi descends smoothly.
For treating sudden onset of Hong Kong Foot in Lingnan, rushing to the heart causing mental chaos, use Muxiang Tang (Costus Root Decoction):
Muxiang (Costus Root) 4 liang, Yuliren (Pruni Semen, soaked in water, skin removed, stir-fried) 4 liang, Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) 1.5 liang, Zisujing (Perillae Caulis, finely cut) 1 liang, Sangbaipipi (Mori Cortex, chopped).
The above seven herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take 5 qianbi per dose, decoct with 1 zhan of water and 1 fen of smashed Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) until 1 zhan remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
If urgent preparation is impossible, simply take 3 qian of Binglangmo (Arecae Semen Pulverized), decoct in 1 zhan of water until 0.7 zhan remains, and take; this is also effective.
Another formula: Binglang Tang (Areca Nut Decoction):
Binglangmo (Arecae Semen Pulverized), Dafupimo (Arecae Pericarpium Pulverized), Chenjuapi mo (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Pulverized), each 3 qian coarse powder.
The above three ingredients: First decoct Dafupi and Chenjuapi powders in 1 zhan of Tongzi Xiaoniao (Child's Urine) and 1 zhan of water until 1.5 zhan remains. Then add Binglangmo, boil again until bubbling, strain, and take warm slowly. Repeat if symptoms persist.
For treating Hong Kong Foot in Lingnan attacking the heart causing pain and mental chaos, use Nongpu Tang (Magnolia Bark Decoction):
Nongpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, bark removed, stir-fried with ginger juice), Muxiang (Costus Root), Binglang (Arecae Semen), each 1 liang.
The above three herbs are crushed into coarse powder. First decoct 3 qianbi of Nongpu powder with 3 zhan of water and 1 fen of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) until 2 zhan of concentrated liquid remains. Add 2 qian each of Binglangmo and Muxiangmo, boil briefly, strain, and take warm anytime. Effect is indicated by 1-2 loose stools.
For treating diseases in Lingnan such as miasma, epidemic qi, and Hong Kong Foot, use Jinya San (Jinya Powder):
Jinya (Chloriti Folium, ground) 1 liang 1 fen, Niuhuang (Bovis Calculus, ground) 1 fen, Tianxiong (Aconiti Radix Lateralis Preparata, cracked, skin and navel removed), Biboxie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma, chopped), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, de-black heart), Shexiang (Moschus, ground), Wutou (Aconiti Radix, cracked, skin and navel removed), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, de-leaves), Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, bark removed), Mangcao (Adenophorae Radix, roasted), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn, sliced), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, roasted), each 3 fen; Wugong (Solifugae, roasted) 1 piece; Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, de-fibers) 1 liang.
The above fifteen herbs are ground into powder. Take 3 qianbi per dose, mixed with warm wine, taken 3 times day and 2 times night, until effective. Also, carry a sachet containing 1 fangcunbi of the powder; men wear it on the left, women on the right.
For treating Hong Kong Foot onset in Lingnan due to earth qi stagnation, excessive heat-toxic wind, and chronic deficiency heat in spleen/lungs, use Duhuo Infused Wine (Duhuo Jiu):
Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, de-radicle), Sheng Ganzhudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, dried/baked), each 3 liang; Sheng Heidoupi (Glycines Max Seed Coat) 1 dasheng; Haitongpi (Sarcandae Cortex) 2 liang; Sheng Eshigen (Arctii Radix) 1 jin; Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, bark removed) 1 liang; Dama Ziren (Cannabis Semen) 1 sheng (stir-fried).
The above seven herbs are chopped to the size of black bean grains, placed in a raw silk bag, and soaked in 3 dou of unadulterated wine in a porcelain jar. Soak for 7 days in winter, 3 days in summer, 5 days in spring/autumn. Drink freely at any time, maintaining a sensation of alcohol in the body. Refill wine as needed; remake medicine when flavor fades.
For treating Hong Kong Foot miasma with alternating chills and fever resembling malaria, foot swelling with qi rushing upward, chest stuffiness, cough, flaccid tendons, and numbness, use Dama Ziren Tang (Hemp Seed Decoction):
Dama Ziren (Cannabis Semen, lightly stir-fried), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, de-root and joint), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, chopped, stir-fried with vinegar), each 1 liang.
The above seven herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take 5 qianbi per dose, decoct with 1.5 zhan of water and 0.5 he of Chidou (Sojae Semen Preparatum) until 0.7 zhan remains, strain, add Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) 1 qian, boil briefly, and take on empty stomach, near noon, and near evening.
