Commentary states: The liver qi connects with the eyes; the eyes are the external organ of the liver. Furthermore, the essence and qi of all five zang organs and six fu organs ascend to pour into the eyes. However, the eyes have five distinct tissues that internally correspond to the five zang organs, where the essence of bone forms the pupil (tongren), and the essence of sinews forms the black part of the eye (heijing). If there is heat excess in the liver and kidney, or stagnation and obstruction in the upper diaphragm, wind pathogens and toxic vapors attacking upward toward the eyes will all cause pain in the eyeballs.
