[Discussion] The condition of lung asthma and rapid breathing (Fei Chuan Qi Ji) is caused by deficiency of Qi in the Lung and Kidney, resulting from invasion by cold-damp Yin pathogens. The Lung is the canopy (Hua Gai) of the five Zang organs; the meridian of the Kidney enters the Lung. Therefore, when there is deficiency below and excess above, the airway becomes rushed and forced, the lung lobes rise high, the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner) qi mechanism is obstructed, leading to asthma and rapid breathing with inability to lie flat. Additionally, the *Neijing* states that water disease manifests as abdominal swelling below and asthma/calling out without ability to lie down above; this is a case where both root and branch are diseased.
