Discussion states: Consumption cough arises from damage to the Lung and weakness of the Stomach, leading to a decline in Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, such that Yang Qi fails to warm and nourish. The Lung governs Qi and serves as the canopy over the five Zang organs; its meridian circles around the stomach opening. When the Lung is injured by consumption, it causes coughing and rebellious Qi ascending, or expectoration of pus and blood, alternating chills and fever, flushed face and dry mouth, preference for lying on one side with spontaneous sweating, inability to eat, and emaciation of skin and muscles. This is what constitutes consumption cough.
