Discourse states: In patients with deficiency consumptive disease (Xu Lao), yang qi is insufficient. When water and fluid intake enter the stomach, they fail to circulate and distribute normally, leading to the accumulation of excessive phlegm-fluids (Tan Yin). The clinical manifestations include a sensation of fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm, difficulty breathing with shortness of breath, lethargy and drowsiness, palpitations in the epigastrium, coughing with expectoration of phlegm-fluids, and anorexia. The treatment principle should focus on regulating and smoothing the San Jiao (Triple Burner, the pathways for Qi and fluids in the upper, middle, and lower body), adjusting the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang, ensuring the smooth flow of the air passages, so that the phlegm-fluids will naturally dissipate.
For treating deficiency consumptive disease characterized by bodily insufficiency, emaciation of the four limbs, deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, stagnation of phlegm-fluids, anorexia, and sweating immediately after eating, use Huang Tang Decoction.
Ingredients: Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, sliced and roasted); Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried and sliced); Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, sliced and roasted); Xi Xin (Asari Radix, roots and leaves removed); Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, stems and leaves removed); Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus; Xiang Mu was likely intended or a specific variant, but text says "Ren Shen Gui", assuming Gui Zhi/Cinnamon Twig based on context or potentially missing character, sticking to literal "Ren Shen, Cinnamon Twig"); Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, soaked in decoction to remove slipperiness and roasted).
The above twelve ingredients are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose consists of 5 Qian Bi (approx. 15-20g depending on era measure), boiled with 1.5 Liang of water, half a piece of fresh ginger smashed, and three dates pitted. Boil until reduced to one Liang, strain, and take warm in two divided doses. Take one dose on an empty stomach, and the second dose after walking for about three to five Li (approx. 1.5-2.5 km).
For treating deficiency consumptive disease with alternating chills and fever, unresolved phlegm-fluids, stiffness and tension of the four limbs, and cold hands and feet, use Ban Xia Tang Decoction.
Ingredients: Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed in decoction to remove slipperiness and dried/roasted); Bing Lang (Arecae Semen); Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, roots removed); Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, stir-fried); Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Cortex, black skin removed).
The above eight ingredients are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose consists of 5 Qian Bi, boiled with 1.5 Liang of water and one fen of fresh ginger smashed. Boil until reduced to one Liang, strain, and take warm in two divided doses on an empty stomach.
For treating deficiency consumptive disease with rebellious Qi, vomiting of phlegm-saliva, use Pi Pa Ye Tang Decoction.
Ingredients: Pi Pa Ye (Loquat Leaf, brushed to remove hairs, soaked in fresh ginger juice and roasted); Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, rhizome removed); Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, stir-fried, each 3 Fen); Huo Xiang Ye (Agastaches Herba); Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma); Jia Yu (Testudinis et Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum, skirt removed, soaked in vinegar and roasted); Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, sliced and roasted); Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix); Hua Shi (Talcum, ground seven times); Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma); Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium).
The above twenty-five ingredients are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose consists of 5 Qian Bi, boiled with 1.5 Liang of water, one fen of fresh ginger smashed, and two dates split open. Boil until reduced to 80%, strain, and take hot. Doses are taken on an empty stomach, at noon, and near nightfall.
For treating Five Exhaustions and Seven Injuries, weak Qi of the Spleen and Stomach, unresolved phlegm-fluids, chest fullness with rebellious Qi, vomiting, and reduced appetite, use Fu Ling Tang Decoction.
Ingredients: Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Cortex, black skin removed); Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, rhizome removed); Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed until cracked, skin and navel removed, each 0.5 Liang); Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, sliced); Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, skirt removed, soaked in vinegar and roasted until yellow); Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed in decoction seven times to remove slipperiness and stir-fried dry, each 1 Liang); Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, soaked in decoction, white pith removed and roasted); Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, each 1 Fen).
Take warm on an empty stomach, and again at noon and before bedtime.
For treating deficiency consumptive disease with dysfunction of the Spleen and Stomach, retention of phlegm-fluids, vexation and oppression in the chest and heart, anorexia, retching, and vertigo, use Ren Shen Ban Xia Tang Decoction.
Ingredients: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed in decoction fourteen times to remove slipperiness); Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Cortex, black skin removed, each 1 Liang); Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium, 2 pieces); Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, rhizome removed); Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix).
