Discussion states: The disease of Tuoying (Depletion of Ying) belongs to the category of Xu Lao (Deficiency Exhaustion). It is not caused by external pathogens but arises from within. Such individuals may have once been noble and later became humble, harboring deep longing and attachment in their hearts; or they may hold ambitions filled with sorrow and misery; or they may have gone from wealth to sudden poverty, or from joy to abrupt suffering. All these conditions damage the spirit, externally depleting Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) and internally depleting Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi). This leads to stagnation of Ying blood and dissolution of Wei Qi, resulting in Qi deficiency without essence, gradual emaciation of the body, frequent chills and fright. In severe cases, essence and qi are exhausted, the physical form deteriorates, the skin becomes dry, sinews contract, and atrophy and spasms occur. These are its manifestations.
