Discourse states: The manifestations of scrofula (Luo Li, a disease characterized by tubercles in the neck) generally fall into three categories: first, wind-toxin, caused by wind pathogen; second, qi-toxin, caused by qi stagnation; third, heat-toxin, caused by sores.
Formula for treating wind-heat toxin and volatile toxins condensing into scrofula, accompanied by aversion to cold and high fever, worsening upon exertion, and about to ulcerate: Muxiang Wan (Wood Fragrance Pill).
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, note: modern usage substitutes with other materials due to conservation laws), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (each 1.5 liang), Bailian (Ixiae Bulbus) (1.1 liang), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), Haizao (Sargassum), Wushe (Bungarus multicinctus) (soaked in wine overnight, skin and bones removed, roasted), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) (each 2 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (crushed and lightly stir-fried, 3 liang), Kunbu (Eckloniae Thallus) (2 liang).
The above eleven ingredients are crushed, sieved into powder, and formed into pills the size of wutong seeds using refined honey. Take ten pills per dose, swallowed with warm wine on an empty stomach, and take another dose at night.
Formula for treating heat toxin, volatile toxin, and wind toxin condensing into scrofula: Lianqiao Wan (Forsythia Pill).
Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (1 liang), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (crushed and stir-fried), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (rhizome removed), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Shanzhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen) (each 1 liang).
The above nine ingredients are crushed, sieved into fine powder, and formed into pills the size of wutong seeds using refined honey. Take twenty pills per dose after meals, swallowed with rice water, twice daily.
Formula for treating wind-heat qi-toxin condensing into scrofula: Mutong Wan (Akebia Pill).
Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) (crushed), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) (wine-soaked and stir-fried), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (crushed and stir-fried), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) (stalks removed), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (each 1 liang).
The above six ingredients are crushed, sieved into fine powder, and formed into pills the size of wutong seeds using refined honey. Take ten pills per dose, swallowed with aged tea.
Formula for treating scrofula in the neck and axilla caused by heat toxin and volatile toxins condensing: Banmao San (Mustard Beetle Powder).
Banmao (Mylabris) (head, wings, and feet removed, stir-fried with glutinous rice until yellow, 0.5 liang), Chao Douhuang Mo (Stir-fried Soybean Powder), Chao Nuomi Mo (Stir-fried Glutinous Rice Powder) (each 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (size of one finger joint, half raw, half roasted), Nifen (Calomel) (1 fen).
The above five ingredients are crushed, sieved into powder, mixed uniformly, and ground together. Take two qianbi (small spoonfuls) per dose on an empty stomach, mixed with rice water. Vomiting and diarrhea should occur to expel evil substances. Immediately afterward, cook glutinous rice porridge to nourish the body. If vomiting persists, decoct stir-fried soybean powder to stop it. If vomiting is severe and unceasing, grind a small amount of Xionghuang (Realgar) and Shexiang (Moschus) to stop it. After recuperation, take again. The goal is to induce vomiting and diarrhea to expel evil substances.
Formula for treating long-standing wind-toxin that has not resolved, binding with meridians and collaterals, forming scrofula nodules in the neck and axilla: Qinjiao Tang (Gentiana Decoction).
Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) (rhizome and soil removed), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), QingjuPi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (albedo removed, dried), Binglang (Arecae Semen) (roasted, each 0.5 liang), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) (shaved, 3 fen).
The above five ingredients are coarsely crushed and sifted. Take three qianbi per dose, with one cup of water and a little Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), decoct until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm.
Formula for treating scrofula not yet ulcerated, caused by wind-toxin, volatile toxin, and heat-toxin: Dahuang San (Rhubarb Powder).
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (wrapped in wet paper and roasted until slightly charred), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (processed), Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (cleaned and dried, each 1 liang), Binglang (Arecae Semen) (roasted, 1 fen).
The above four ingredients are crushed, sieved into powder. Take two qianbi per dose, mixed with honey-water. Take three to five times daily. Healing occurs when fish-brain-like evil substances are expelled.
Formula for treating qi stagnation pain, heat-toxin nodules, or excessive irritability with fever but no aversion to cold: Jiming San (Crowing Rooster Powder).
Qianniuzi Mo (Pharbitidis Semen Powder) (1 liang), Hufen (Lead Carbonate) (1 qian), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (steamed and powdered, 2 qian), Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (refined powder, 3 qian).
The above four ingredients are crushed, sieved into powder. At dawn (cockcrow time), take three qianbi mixed with Jinghua Shui (first-drawn well water). Stop when purged; if not purged, take again.
[Text fragment regarding treatment for wind-heat qi stagnation]
Hufen (Lead Carbonate) (1 qian), Xionghuang (Realgar) (powdered, 1 qian), Cihuang (Orpiment) (powdered, 1 qian).
The above three ingredients are ground uniformly. Mix with the whites of three black chicken eggs. Place in a clean porcelain cup and steam over rice until firm but tender. Form into pills the size of wutong seeds. Take thirty to forty pills per dose, swallowed with warm hot water. Expulsion of evil substances indicates efficacy.
Formula for internal resolution of wind-heat toxin and volatile toxins condensing into scrofula: Neixiao Qianghuo San (Internal Resolution Notopterygium Powder).
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (rhizome removed, 1.5 liang), Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (roasted, 1 liang).
