Discourse states: Animals produced by heaven and plants produced by earth are endowed with Yin and Yang, possessing complete Qi and flavors. Through harmonious drinking and eating, practicing the virtue of food, and maintaining moderation without excess, once food enters the mouth, it reaches the Spleen and Stomach; once breath enters the nose, it is stored in the Heart and Lungs. Qi and flavors complement each other, and Shen (Spirit) naturally arises. In daily leisure, relying on these ensures peace and health; when illness occurs, relying on them for treatment can eliminate nine-tenths of the disease. Preserving life and prolonging longevity, is this not more than sufficient? Therefore, distinguishing the Five Meats, Five Fruits, and Five Vegetables must prioritize the Five Grains, as endless generation finds no better seed than the Five Grains. Distinguishing the benefits, assistance, and filling properties of foods must prioritize nourishment, as the nourishing effects of the Five Foods all desire to achieve a state of fullness and beauty. It is not merely so; spirit becomes spiritual by following the Five Qi. If food Qi conflicts, it damages Jing (Essence); the body forms through the Five Flavors. If food flavors are unharmonized, it damages the form. When Yin prevails, Yang suffers illness; when Yang prevails, Yin suffers illness. Only when Yin and Yang are harmonized does one remain peaceful and healthy. Thus it is said: The root of securing the body must rely on food. Not knowing the appropriateness of food is insufficient to preserve life. It is also said: Food has success and failure; common people use it daily without knowing. If one understands this way, one can calm the Zang-Fu organs, supplement Qi and Blood, brighten the complexion, refresh the will, and peacefully remove diseases. Is this not profound? Sun Simiao said that physicians must first understand the source of disease and know what factors are violated, treating it with food. If food therapy is ineffective, then prescribe medicine. He also believed that medicinal properties are harsh and fierce, like the猛暴 (fierce attack) of an army. Indeed, such words are true. Now, medicaments for specific conditions have been detailed. Here, food therapy is narrated separately, adhering to the principle of "food before medicine," because food is the sky (sustenance) for the people.
