Commentary states: Hong Kong Jiao (Gouty Arthritis) with numbness and weakness is caused by the deficiency of both Ying (Nutrient Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi). The *Neijing* (Classic of Internal Medicine) states: Deficiency of Ying Qi leads to insensibility (numbness), while deficiency of Wei Qi leads to inability to move. When both Ying and Wei are deficient, there is both insensibility and immobility. Its presentation causes numbness without pain sensation, and weakness preventing lifting of limbs; fundamentally, it arises from Kidney deficiency. Thus, Su Shi stated that the root cause of Hong Kong Jiao is Kidney deficiency. The *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states that when the Kidney is affected by Yin-dampness, cold Bi syndrome occurs.
