Commentary states: Hong Kong foot (podagra/gouty arthritis) with numbness, spasms, and contracture is mostly caused by cold pathogen. Cold evil clashes with the sinews and vessels, condensing to form disease, resulting in stiff sinews unable to turn or shift position, difficulty in walking, and in severe cases, inability to flex or extend.
Formula for Cistanche Pill (Rongrong Wan) to treat rheumatic Hong Kong foot, where external pathogens lodge and clash with sinews and vessels, causing obstruction, spasms, and insensibility:
Cistanches Herba (soaked in wine, sliced, and roasted) Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (soaked in wine, sliced, and roasted) Gastrodiae Rhizoma Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (soaked in rice washing water overnight, skin scraped off with a bamboo knife) Astragali Membranacei Radix (chopped) Chaenomelis Fructus (skin removed, sliced; the above six herbs, each 10 liang, soaked in 5 sheng of good wine until the liquid is absorbed, then taken out and roasted together with the following three herbs) Cibotii Rhizoma (hairs removed, chopped) Dipsaci Radix (chopped) Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma (chopped, each 2 liang).
The above nine herbs are crushed, sifted into powder. Take three Chaenomelis fruits, remove skin and hollow them out to make a jar-like container. Place 1 liang of Qingyan (Green Salt) inside, seal the mouth, and steam over rice until soft and cooked. Crush into a paste. Add the aforementioned herb powders to the paste and mix to form pills. If the Chaenomelis paste is insufficient, use wine paste as a binder. Make pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, washed down with salt water or wine as preferred, at any time.
