According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases), this condition arises from heat qi in the intestines and stomach; when accompanied by toxic pathogens, yellowish-red discharge occurs. Furthermore, heat-toxin damages the intestines and stomach, resulting in the passage of pus and blood resembling fish brains, or fluid resembling rotting meat, accompanied by high fever and severe abdominal cramping. This is caused by warm-toxic heat qi. (All cited from Volume 9)
*Shen Shi Fang* (Prescriptions from Master Shen) treats epidemic toxic diseases characterized by dysentery due to extreme heat. The Seven-Ingredient Shengma Decoction formula:
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, removed hairs), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (each half liang).
Cut the above herbs, add three sheng of water, decoct to obtain one sheng, and take in a single dose. Avoid kelp, Songcai (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis), pork, cold water, raw green onions, etc.
Another formula for treating various types of epidemic dysentery: Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction).
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, three liang, removed hairs), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, two liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, two liang).
Take the above three ingredients, add six sheng of water, decoct to obtain three sheng, filter out the dregs, add one he of honey, and simmer over low heat to obtain two and a half sheng. Divide into three doses. It is highly effective. Avoid pork and cold water. (All cited from Volume 14. Another version includes one liang of Longgu [Fossilized Bones]).
Fan Wang treats epidemic heat-toxin causing dysentery with red and white discharge, chronic passage of pus and blood, and toxic vapors in the lower jiao, resulting in the passage of small worms like threads of cloth, or worms four to five cun long with black heads and sharp tails. Shexiang Wan (Musk Pill) formula:
Shexiang (Moschus), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed), Xionghuang (Realgar), Dansha (Cinnabar), Jiangjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (each two fen).
Pulverize each of the five ingredients separately, sieve them, then mix and grind together. Blend with honey to form pills the size of small beans. Take one pill with warm water; elderly and children should take half. It is effective. Avoid pork and raw blood products. (Cited from Volume 33)
*Jia Yi Fang* (Prescriptions by Jia and Yi) treats post-epidemic febrile disease where dysenteric pus and blood do not cease:
Longgu (Fossilized Bones, one liang).
Pulverize this single ingredient into powder. Take one qian with rice drink at any time, three times daily. This is optimal.
*Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states that toxic heat accumulates internally, weakening grain qi while toxic vapors flourish. The three parasites become active, consuming the five zang organs, often leading to diarrhea and dysentery. Sores and itching occur in the lower orifices. If sores appear inside the lower lip and the patient desires sleep excessively, it indicates worms are consuming the lower body. In severe cases, the anus rots, and the five zang organs may be visible. (Cited from Volume 9)
*Shen Shi Fang* treats sores and ulceration in the lower orifices due to epidemic disease:
Wumei (Mume Fructus, fourteen seeds, pitted), Dasuan (Allium Sativum, fourteen cloves), Wuchen (House Dust, half sheng, sifted for fine particles).
Pulverize the above three ingredients into a powder. Mix with one sheng of vinegar (Ku Jiu) in a copper vessel, decoct until forming pills, shape into long sticks, and insert into the lower orifice. (*Fan Wang Fang* is identical; Cited from Volume 14)
*Fan Wang Fang* treats itching in the lower orifices:
Extract paste from steamed dates. Grind mercury thoroughly and mix to form pills, ensuring they blend well. Shape into cylinders two to three cun long, wrap thinly in cotton, and insert into the anus. When the worms exit, the condition heals.
Another formula for sores in the du chang (anus):
Finely pulverize water plantain leaves (Xingye), wrap in cotton, and insert into the lower orifice, three times daily. (Identical to *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*)
Another formula for epidemic worms eating the lower orifices causing sores: Xionghuang Dui San (Realgar Powder):
Xionghuang (Realgar, half liang), Qingxiangzi (Celosiae Semen, three liang), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, each three liang), Taoren (Persicae Semen, one and a half liang, skin and tips removed, stir-fried).
Grind and sieve the five ingredients together. Wrap in cotton to the size of half a date pit. Insert into the lower orifice. Alternatively, take one fang cun bi with rice juice, three times daily. Avoid pork, cold water, hot noodles, roasted meat, garlic, etc.
Another formula, Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), for treating epidemic disease:
Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, two liang), Xiaolan (Isatidis Folium, two liang).
Cut the two ingredients, add ten dou of water, decoct to obtain two and a half sheng. Add ten liang of pig liver, remove the membrane, finely grind, and place in the decoction. Mix well and warm slightly before use. If the toxin is entirely in the abdomen, consume all. If located in the lower orifice, use one-third of the medicine. Insert into the lower orifice using a bamboo tube. After one shichen (two hours) of taking the medicine, expect the passage of five to six sheng of hair-thin worms. For children, halve the dosage. Avoid raw green onions. (All cited from Volume 33)
Wen Zhong and Yao Shi treat sores in the lower orifices due to epidemic disease:
Concentrated decoction of peach bark boiled down to a syrup consistency. Wrap in cotton and insert as a suppository into the lower orifice. If sores are in the mouth, hold in the mouth. (*Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*, *Fan Wang Fang* are identical; Cited from Volume 2)
*Jia Yi Fang* treats epidemic disease with worms eroding the lower orifices causing sores: Qingxiangzi San (Celosiae Seed Powder):
Qingxiangzi (Celosiae Semen, one liang), Lu (Reed Rhizome, two liang), Ye Langya (Sanguisorbae Radix, one liang), Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, one liang), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, three liang).
Pulverize and sieve the five ingredients into a powder. Mix with rice juice and take one fang cun bi, three times daily. Continue if not healed, until cured.
Another formula for epidemic dysentery with pus and blood, and worms in the lower orifice: Huanglian Wan (Coptis Pill):
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, two liang powder, raw), La (Beeswax, one liang), Wumei Rou (Mume Fructus pulp, three liang, stewed and powdered).
Melt the beeswax and blend with honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take thirty pills on an empty stomach with rice juice; increase to forty pills for the second dose. The condition will heal. Avoid pork and cold water.
